In “Oh, what ever could it mean?!” news, Capcom has filed a trademark for a new Mega Man game called Mega Man Universe.
The patent covers everything from “computer games in the form of cartridges, cassettes, discs or tapes” to downloadable mobile games to screen savers and ring tones. No mention of online games, which seems a strange omission given the MMO-like nature of the title. Still, I guess that could be included under the vast umbrella of various media types outline in the filing, so don’t lose hope just yet (assuming you are desperate for an MMO based on the Mega Man universe).
I reached out to Capcom to see what info they’re willing to share. I’ll let you know if they pass along anything worth passing along.

I so want a online Mega Man game. Online death match with a bunch of little 8-bit blue bastards blasting pellets at each other. That would be insane! The different Megan Man powers he gets from the bosses could be like a kill streak. I will pray to the Capcom gods to make this happen, I'm not even kidding.

Megaman universe sounds more like a collection more than a mmo. They'll probably just be different mega man games packed into one box...

For a MM MMO to work they need to keep the combat controls just like the games (Legends in particular) so it would work great as a PS3 and XBOX360 MMO to break the MMO franchise on PC's.

Maybe its a big crossover game with all the different megaman games? I've always wondered what would happen if some of the different Mega Men met.

i just hope that if it is another legends style game they make some form of multiplayer (online preferably) because i think an online megaman would literally fly off the shelves

I would love to see how that would work as an MMO. Especially with the traditional mechanics involved with Mega Man.

Hmmm, this could be very interesting. I am a long time Mega Man fan. Heck i even found ways to play Japanese only Rockman games. Hopefully this will be a next gen type game. Whatever it is, I'm sure I'll be excited about it.....even if it sucks.

I'm hoping for some sort of collection with every Megaman game on it. A MMO would be interesting and I'd love to see how they do it but in the end its a Megaman game so whether it's a whole new franchise, a collection of games or just a new add on to a current series, it's a new Megaman game so we all win.
