If you'd love to spend your entire life in the universe created in James Cameron's Avatar, producer John Landau sees you.
We caught up with Landau at the recent 3D Gaming Summit in Los Angeles, and asked about the possibility of an online Avatar, Here's what he said:
"We've already been asked if we'd consider doing an Avatar MMO, and it's something we'd want to do; something we'd be very interested in doing, but we'd have to do it right," Landau said. "I think today, entertainment goes beyond any one medium, as we look to make a persistent world out of Avatar. we'll look to gaming, we'll look to publishing, we'll look to other opportunities in order to do that."

every time a fictional world comes out, everyone says "make an mmo out of it!" But the problem is MMO's take so much effort and money to make (if you make them right). And without millions of subscribers to keep the cashflow coming in, most of them end up dead in a year or so. But at the same time I understand how appealing an MMO is to any serious fan of any fictional world. For example, no matter how much anyone says otherwise, I would waste my life away playing a harry potter mmo if it every happened. i know, i'm shameful

I think by the time a third Avatar comes out and its built up a large devoted nerd fanbase, which it surely will, an MMO could be very succesful. Right now though, no.

Let me be the first to say FLOP and save your money. This is NOT a great idea for an MMO

since the movie is "dances with wolves" with blue people will the game be "red dead redemption" with blue people?
skyrlopez
great, now even MORE people are gonna get depressed when they stop playing the game

ok... Not dissing Avatar here because I liked the Movie and the 360/PS3 game but seriously.. wth is up with this crap?
The movie is still in some theaters, it's already out on Blu-ray with absolutely nothing extra (not even a director commentary from the director who can't shut up about it), they are talking about re-releases, and pulling a "Star Wars extra content release" move less than a year after theatrical release (Lucas waited 20 years before pulling that one). Then the guy who barely has anything on his resume worth taking more than a cursory glance at tries to say that 3D gaming is the way to go?
I'm all for expanding on media (i'll buy anything with star wars on it), but I mean COME THE FRIK ON!!! Give us at least a couple months to get our wallets looking less like a starving Ethiopian kid so we can actually afford your crap, Cameron!
I'm blaming the next recession on James Cameron!

very good idea.

Will the game be as overrated and hackneyed as the movie?

They should have called it, "James Cameron's Avatar: The Tech Demo" instead of "The Game."
