Morning Hangover #71 -- Andrew Looks For Feedback, Patrick Has TV Envy

I'm having a bit of a Deadly Premonition about this week's episode of Feedback. Am I right, Zach? You'll have to tune in to this Wednesday's Feedback to know what I'm talking about, but before we head into the studio tomorrow afternoon to record, we're going to need a little help from you. What do you want to hear the Feedback crew talk about? Warning: if you ask a question about games being art or the importance of 3D on the future of gaming, Adam Sessler will reach out and smack you.

What would happen to the gaming industry if the era of motion controls does end up being a fad? It seems like they're putting a lot of money and time into following the footsteps of the Wii, not that it's a bad thing, but there is always the chance that like 3D gaming it'll end up being a gimmick in time and pass by. How would that affect the industry as a whole? Would it be a major setback for the big name companies?

What is your stance on DRM? I have yet to experience the horrors myself but from the comments I've been reading in some articles --recent one being Capcom's response to ''Final Fight'' PSN sharing protection-- gamers seem to generally hate it. Also, is there a right way to do DRM?

It seems that recently more and more games are beginning to integrate interactive environments, like Breach and Vindictus, allowing for more "realistic " feel to the game. Will there be more immersive environments in games? And will this new "realism" be something that players want or will it take the fun out of the game by being to realistic?

What do you think of the Wii decreasing in popularity? I tried to tell everyone, yeah it's fun, but it will get old after awhile. I've seen this before with their past consoles, they had great first party games, but lacked third party support because the games wouldn't sell. You would think they would learn from their mistakes but why haven't they?

Last week I finally forced myself to watch the trailer for the latest installment into the "Resident Evil" movie series and I couldn't believe what I saw. Since I have watched these movies I have seen from a small decline away from the original game series in the first 2 films to an almost nose dive and what could be construed as a mad dash away from continuity in the third and now the upcoming fourth film.

In your opinion, how is it that those who are in charge of this film series and other game-to-film adaptations, believe that created movies that are only similar to the games they are based off of in name only is actually a good thing? Does Hollywood lock themselves away in dark rooms, with no computer/internet access, in order to hide from the shame and guilt of knowing they are killing many loyal fans of these games dreams of one day seeing a decent video game film? Or are we always doomed to have movies like Super-Mario Brothers and Tekken to be the only films we see of their kind?

My question is concerning the future of console development. With the quality of graphics in video games now being better than ever, what do you think will be some improvements in sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo's next generation of game consoles. Do you think they will make standalone consoles, or just develop new accessories or add ons to their existing consoles (e.g. Playstation move, Natal, and Wii motion plus)? Finally, what do you predict for motion control, will it get better and be the basis for future consoles, or do you think Nintendo will go back to the traditional controller?

Lately, I have been expending a lot of energy trying to appreciate exactly what goes into the games that I love playing. After beating God of War 3, and subsequently watching all of the "Making of" videos I had unlocked, I am seeing game worlds through a new lens. My mind hath been boggled with the amount of work that goes into some of these games. I want to appreciate all the detail that goes into characters and environments, but I feel that it is actually detracting from my enjoyment and immersion. Have any of you had this experience?

Video game soundtracks really set the mood for the action. However, many of these composers are thought of as "second rate" as they produce music for video games. Classical music has really taken a back seat in culture as a whole with most people being exposed to it in motion pictures and television programs. But many of the video game composers deserve a place in the hallowed halls of music as Williams, Elfman, Zimmer, and Shore. What are your favorite video game soundtracks and/or when did game music really set the mood for what you were experiencing? My most recent memory is "End Run" in Mass Effect 2.

Do developers miss the boat with DLC? Most DLC is released at random points after release leaving the consumer with no real heads up. I am at a cross roads with Mass Effect 2, have not played it in months, do I wait for the unspoken DLC or resell it? I'm thinking I want my 30 bucks.

I know this is like beating the dead horse, but do you guys really think that the industry, which is going through a tough time can even afford the switch to 3D gaming?

I've noticed that the addition of cheat codes in games has almost disappeared, only to be replaced by glitches why has this become the new norm?

How many people need to leave before Infinity Ward is no longer Infinity Ward? Or has it already happened? Are there (or will there be) enough original and key people left at Infinity Ward to produce games that carry their signature in more than just name only?

So with the release of God of War 3, we saw the re-release of GOW 1 and 2 "remastered." I realize that this occurred because of the release of the third installment, but do you guys think that remastered versions of classic PS2 games could be popular? Because I would kill for an HD Shadow of the Colossus.

Here's one inspired by 3D Dot Game Heroes: What older video game genre or niche market would you like to see revisited by a modern game developer?

Da.....Da.......DaDaaa. Fairly soon we will be introduced to another Halo iteration. I am amused at the antics of pro MW2 and pro Halo. I simply cannot understand why people can't enjoy both games, which I do. They have different game-play mechanics and one most certainly changes their method of decimation. It's called creativity and variation. G4, xbox live, your friends and even your mom has been saying it. In fact I think she's calling you to wash your hands for supper. Get off line and stop screaming adjectives of profanity without any nouns. But I digress.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare revitalized the franchise and brought new life to it. WIll the this new iteration of Halo in the fall, if not the beta also, prove to be the fresh blood for the franchise needs in multiplayer and campaign dynamics?

I for one enjoyed ODST but still was left wanting more. The game teased me that there was a Spartan world outside of the Master Chief, not that I hate him or anything, but it left me wanting more intensity and a live-action Halo film thanks to the best marketing campaign in years.

So, will Reach be the cure for what ODST could only be a band-aide? Will it bring into the fold those weary of the same ol' same ol' and those who are hooked on MW2 crack?

What is your take on Mouse and keyboard support on consoles like the xbox 360/PS3? Ive know that there are ways to use a mouse/keyboard on the xbox 360 like the Xim 2 and the upcoming XIM3 over at xim360.com. which actually brings the closest to feeling like using a mouse.

Videos with it in use (XIM3):

So, May is lining up to be full of some pretty sweet games. You have Red Dead Redemption, Alan Wake, Skate 3, and Lost Planet 2. Do you think the Halo: Reach Beta will hinder the sales of these games? I know I will be playing Reach as much as I can and will probably only pick up Red Dead Redemption from this list.

Hmm. I read on Kotaku about Japanese gaming mag Famitsu having a conflict of interest with Konami. The magazine gave Metal Gear: peace walker a coveted 40/40 score but the magazine's proprietor was seen in an ad (i believe in the magazine but i'm not sure) for Konami. This may or may not mean that the score is legit but it does raise those questions...
