Morning Hangover #71 -- Andrew Looks For Feedback, Patrick Has TV Envy

I'm having a bit of a Deadly Premonition about this week's episode of Feedback. Am I right, Zach? You'll have to tune in to this Wednesday's Feedback to know what I'm talking about, but before we head into the studio tomorrow afternoon to record, we're going to need a little help from you. What do you want to hear the Feedback crew talk about? Warning: if you ask a question about games being art or the importance of 3D on the future of gaming, Adam Sessler will reach out and smack you.

Have something to share? Sitting on a news tip? E-mail me. You can also follow me on Twitter.

So, since last year's E3, the overall sentiments of many at G4 is that there is no desire for a new generation of consoles, mainly because the developers have a steep learning curve in trying to learn the ins and outs of programming for a new system, which distracts the developers' focus on producing quality games.

I wonder, however, that maybe the concept of generational consoles may be a bit dated. Computers, for example, do not see major generational jumps that the consoles do, but merely incremental upgrades that tend to add up over the years. I say this, not only as a thought as to how systems can continually improve without seriously obstructing developer ambition, but also as an acknowledgment that sooner or later, key parts in every device will eventually become obsolete, thus become the driving force for a new console.

Probably too late -- but just watched the latest soapbox.

Take two people -- the typical violent videogame teen, and an Amish teen. Gut a cow... who will flinch?

((Being desensitized to /something/ isn't being desensitized to everything, as Adam says.))

I just finished reading the reacharound about Mature not meaning adult. I live in New York City where retailers will not sell to minors. In the end the children go to their parents wo will buy the game for them. A similar thing happened to my 6 year old cousin who wants to play Just Crime. My aunt saw the M ratying but did not understand its meaning. When I explained M was the equivilant of R in movies she took the game away. Do you think switching the ESRB system to one similar to movies i.e. G,PG,PG-13,R,NC-17 will help parents better buy games for their children or should they just be more informed. I saw the bill to have 1" stickers on the front of games, why not just have huge signs that explain the meaning of ratings placed in stores? It would be just as effective and would not hurt the devs or publishers.

So we've all seen the complaints about games that have been made into bad movies. My question is what, if any, movies do you think would be good as either action games or a more interactive type of game like "Heavy Rain"? Do you think these would be more successful since they have to be based on an entertaining story more then on how fun it is to play? I know that they typically make any of the blockbuster movies into games now, but what I'm more interested in the surprise hits then the franchise movies.

It's been 25 years since I first played a Mario game. 25 years and over 100 different games. That's not even counting the plethora of other games he has appeared in besides his own. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is on the way and expected to sale big. My question is; How? I understand that Link and Samus made it out of the 8-bit era in fine from as well but they've never had the proliferation of titles, tie-ins, and promotions that Mario has had. Zelda and Metroid still sell for Nintendo and still stand for quality but they are not the "flag ship franchise". Zelda and Metroid have never had to worry about over exposure.

How has Mario not only survived for so long but thrived through out the decades? Many , many game mascots and franchises have come and gone since his debut but none of them ever came close to his success. Times change but Mario never seems to go out of style. Is it the quality of the games that keep people coming back or maybe nostalgia since he is most people's "first"? How has Mario stayed not only relevant all this time but basically on the top of the mountain save a few lean years here and there? Do you see any slow down to Mario-mania anytime soon or has Nintendo got the golden goose and he's never gonna stop laying eggs and would Link or Samus have survived in the same fashion had they been "over exposed" with a new game or 2 every year? I doubt it my self.

What do you guys think of Ubisoft ditching paper game manuals from games. It's a terrible idea, imagine reading a long manual from your tv screen.

In regards to your Final Fantasy review this is my question. Giving the game a 4 out of 5 I believe personally was generous. The game was no doubt beautiful, but just because it's pretty dosen't mean we'll love it. It was painfully obvious that SE put all of their money into the grpahics of this game. The battle system is what we would call "Ode to the Auto Button" and the overall story was handed to us with an encyclapedia. Not to mention this was an incredibly linear game from start to finish. In no way does it get better after the first 20 hours, this is a lie. In no way do I beleive this game deserved a 4 out of five and many of my friends agree. My question is being, will game companies follow this trend of making their games pretty in order to distract us from how bad the gameplay is?

The definition of "art", according to Webster's is "the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance". To me, that does sound a lot like video games. I'm not saying this because I am searching for the approval of Roger Ebert or even Adam Sessler. I just want to know WHY video games CANNOT be considered an art? Just how many mediums can combine beautiful or epic music, striking design and a thought provoking story and then go the extra mile and let the viewer interact in it? Who cares if they can control what the character(s) do(es)? It can still be art, right?

Do you play games for the experience or the challenge? For example, I played Uncharted 2 the first time on easy mode because I thought that dying a lot would take away from the experience.

With Alan Wake coming out in May, do you think that this game could start a re-surge in the survival horror games? We had Resident Evil 5, but lets face it, it was more action now than survival horror. the last Silent Hill was a bit of a disappointment compared to others. It just seems that the horror genre seems to be dropping off dramatically in recent years. I grew up on Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame, even Eternal Darkness. The only success story is Dead Space. Could "remedy"...remedy this for other developers to get back into the game and make survival horror games that are psychological and horrifying again?

with the post Avatar 3D obsession bleeding into gaming do you think this is a case of non gamers trying to make decisions for gamers so that they can sell their 3D TVs?

With the announcement of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, a game that can't come out soon enough in my opinion I was wondering if there were any other long over due sequels you guys feel are long overdue?

I have a question that won't piss anyone off at all. My question is "is Adam Sessler and the rest of the Xplay/G4 staff being to hard on 3D technology?". Most seem to be down right upset at the thought of having 3D as the future cultural standard. I think you have not thought hard enough and are letting past bias, namely 3D being a gimmick and only a passing fade, sway you mind set? I think necessity is the mother of all invitation, and money is the root of all necessity. These game and tech company's love to make money and out do each other. Maybe they can take 3D to the next level and make some grand out of it. We all want holographic TVs and this is the first set in that direction in my humble opinion. Do you think you can rethink your positions on 3D and see a little light at the end of that tunnel and why/who not?

Have you noticed that the Xbox always has machines gun sounds emitting from it? Their are very few xbox ip's without guns. PS3 has God of War, Lil Big Planet, and MLB The Show. Top selling games all without a single gun.

    Two questions:
    1. As larger game developers create more game apps for the iPhone and iPad (like EA's Mirror's Edge and Capcom's SSIV), is there a way to find out future releases from larger companies and if they tie in to their future platform games?
    2. Will you guys be including Talkabouts in your Web Shows podcast soon?

Also, as to Adam saying art is static, I feel art is more of an interaction between the art and the individual. It only depends on the medium for the amount of activity involved for the observer. To help reiterate my point (and if you're looking for more obscure references), you should check out Art 21. I love that series so much!

Would you guys ever consider auctioning off the spot for the rotating chair of a single episode for charity, or perhaps as a reward for a G4TV contest?

While I am neither rich nor lucky, I'd love a chance to talk shop with you guys. :)

With everyone's' grandma and her cat owning a DS and Wii and the only games that are selling are those of the casual variety, should Nintendo stop developing products for the hardcore gamer?
