Morning Hangover #71 -- Andrew Looks For Feedback, Patrick Has TV Envy

I'm having a bit of a Deadly Premonition about this week's episode of Feedback. Am I right, Zach? You'll have to tune in to this Wednesday's Feedback to know what I'm talking about, but before we head into the studio tomorrow afternoon to record, we're going to need a little help from you. What do you want to hear the Feedback crew talk about? Warning: if you ask a question about games being art or the importance of 3D on the future of gaming, Adam Sessler will reach out and smack you.

Have something to share? Sitting on a news tip? E-mail me. You can also follow me on Twitter.

What "genre" of video games (not just puzzle, FPS, RPG but horror, noir, comedy, etc) do you feel is under represented, what do you wish could be done about it? Is there something specific about that genre that just doesn't translate into video games? Or have we just not been able to invent the gameplay necessary to fit that type of genre.

I have been playing video games since I was three years old, now I am turning twenty five having completed my Masters program in Criminal Justice I consider myself proof that video games violent or other wise are just another media and have no significant influence on a person behavior. I've even converted a few professors that where leaning on the notion that violent games do influence violent behavior using Mr. Sessler as a reference a few times. And now with the Supreme Court taking the case of the ban of "ultra-violent", I believe is the term, video games being sold to minors as an issue of first amendment rights and the vagueness of the language in the bill will bring this issue to the final boss fight that we so desperately need. That being, violent video games cause violent behavior.

With all this Infinity Ward/Activision drama coming to a crescendo what kind of ending do you think we will see to this? Will we see Jason & Vince make MW3 at Respawn and be paid all the royalties they deserve with the rest of the IWEG or will the courts favor with Activison?

With an increasing focus on digital distribution on the horizon, do you think the days of game stores, release partys, and video game sections in major retailers will just disappear? It's always been a neat part of the gaming culture, people forget fanboy lines were invented before the iPhone hit stores. Also, with this increasingly focus on cloud-stored games, on clients like Steam, what will happen to the ownership of the individual? I remember being able to lend my best friend games after I had finished them so he could enjoy the experience as well, are games without CO-OP now going to be 'single-user experience' based?

So it seems the general reaction to Roger Ebert challenge was to basically say "who cares what Ebert thinks about video games", but doesn't this view merely reinforce the image of people who play video games as "gamers" and that in order to remove that branding we need to intelligently debate those who challenge the artistic nature of gaming, instead of just dismissing them like they dismiss us (especially someone as universally respected as Roger Ebert)?

Remember the series finale of ALF? They just kinda implied ALF had been captured by the government and just sorta went to credits, ending the series with no resolution. I guess my question is: What was up with that?

Ok, being a huge PC lover, I am very disappointed that Crysis 2 keeps getting pushed back without giving us something to chew on for a while. I was so happy to finally see a website and an actual trailer. But there is something munching at us PC people. We need to know that Crysis 2 is going to not be a console port. The only videos shown are of the PS3 and 360. Its like they're holding something to the back of our heads. "Ok, ok! Take all the extra time you need to make the game great, just please don' let Crysis 2 be a console port to the PC!" There is a lot of questioning about Crysis 2 for the PC. With the new Cryengine 3, a lot of PC people are wondering if the new format will be like Crysis (for the proud and the few people with enough money) or will they work towards something more like Crysis: Warhead where the engine was better formatted for a wider audience. We are all happy to see the new environment that we will be able to play in and we don't want to see this game slip out of the PC's hands and go towards the consoles.

Sorry for a double post, but I just remember a conversation I had with an employee while browsing a GameStop. I was complaining to a friend I was with about the lack of the memorable game franchises I used to play when I was younger that has not evolved or been updated into the modern consoles. This was brought about by my dislike for the over population of motion focused, content lacking Wii games that are for sale and the fact I own like 2 games for my Wii that my mom bought for us because she thought it could be used for exercise. One of the many reasons I only own 2 games on that thing is because I have a lot more games I'd rather play on my PS3 or PC. Ironically, she doesn't play with it and I go to the gym to work out. Anyway, a GameStop employee overheard me (wasn't his fault, the Wii section was right next to the counter) and agreed with me, sparking up a conversation about some old games that made the Nintendo console so memorable.

One of the one gaming franchises that I truly missed, and the employee from GameStop agreed should come back, from the N64 days was Star Fox. OH HOW I MISS THAT!!! Controlling the Arwing (I can't believe I actually remember what that thing was called after all these years.) with the Wii remote would be really interesting.... Though you'd probably need motion plus. LOL. Why won't they bring back some of those old Nintendo game franchises? On top of that question, what other game franchises would you like to see revived into current consoles? (Wishful thinking: Soul Reaver on the PS3 anybody?)

How funny do you find it that Governor Schwarzenegger is supporting the ban of selling M rated games to kids under the age of 18 when he himself starred in so many rated R movies that I'm sure many people under the age of 18 saw?

Do you think 3D games can be art?.....I Keed I Keed (dont' hit meh)
Anyway, I've been following the development of Alan Wake for quite some time
and it got me thinking how come there aren't more story driven games like this.
It seems that many of the games are lacking this basic element, I mean i doubt that
you are just going to buy the game for multiplayer. Rather they seem to be more focused
on mechanics. What do you think, is there a need for quality plot line in more games and that
developers are sacking story for mechanics, or perhaps its something else. Personally I think
Its fine the way things are now especially with games like MW2 and GoW 3 but i wish more games
have a bit of sustenance when telling a story.

Do you think with the propsed regulations that are attempting to be passed that eventually once they find a successful law they will next start policing online games for user content infractions such as online bullying or underage children playing violent games? In which case would they charge parents for these infractions if they ever came to see the light of day and came into law? It seems that by continuously trying to take the next step in laws in gaming other questions arise for future experiences that would be considered offensive or inappropriate.

    Hey, Feedback crew!

As Red Dead Redemption's release date draws mercifully closer, they have been releasing stills and videos of the multiplayer. I think the multiplayer looks awesome and has a somewhat MMO feel to it, letting players play around in the "lobby area" (the world map) without having to launch a traditional game mode.

My question is: Do you think that this "the world is your lobby" idea will catch on, and, based on the little we know, should it? Does it work (as far as we know) mostly because the idea of posses and exploration are so uniquely Western?

Its obvious that Activision isnt doing to well with retaining emploeey's at Infinity Ward, and it seems like those same employee's are traveling to Respawn Entertainment along with Jason and Vince. Do you think, if more and more employee's continue with this pattern, will Respawn Entertainment actually make a Modern Wafare "killer"? Or the most important question is if its actually possible to do this.

There has been a recent article on ign about how ubisoft is going to get rid of manuals for their games. This is due to having alot of information for their games on the internet I personaly enjoyed reading and referencing my game manual's and it gives a sense of nostalgia. How do you guys feel about their choice and why?

P.S sorry about my bad spelling.

After the release of 3.30 firmware for the PS3, Dragon Age: Origins started to have issues with game freezing and hanging. With 3.30 being the update to activate the ability to properly use 3D on the PS3 (at least for televisions not yet or soon on the market) could this be a trend with other consoles, where an after production release for the firmware starts to negatively impact games written for a previous build? Could the possibility of this occurring start impacting relationships between game makers and the companies making the current or next wave of consoles?

Everytime I hear new information coming out of this suit I hear Bobby Kotick at DICE too. Yeah, they're a mothership, but aliens have a mothership too and no one want's be on that either.

With a lawsuit by 38 people who are either employees of Infinity Ward or those that have left to join Respawn or about to join Respawn (at least that's the best educated guess) against Activision now filed. What does this mean for Activision?

Taking this with the Gwen Stefani suit and the suit from Vince and Jason. Could what at first seemed like Activision shooting itself in the foot now be the magic bullet that started at the foot and is working it's way up to the head?

Is this the decision that sends Activision the way of Acclaim and Atari?

In regards to cooperative modes in video games do you see the industry shifting its focus back to the core elements of traditional gaming ie: playing on the couch with some friends or do you see the industry moving away from this mode as we have seen less and less games feature cooperative modes. Do you believe the introduction of online play has attributed to this change?

On another podcast I listen to, they talked about what their most influential game was. I thought that this would be a good discussion topic for your show. So, putting this in question form, what are your most influential games? Feel free to ignore me if this question has already been brought up.
