Well, it’s official. Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 now holds the Guinness World Record for most successful entertainment launch of all time.
The mega smash hit sequel raked in a cool $401.6 million worldwide in its first 24 hours of sale. This staggering performance bested previous champion, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV, which pulled in $310 million its first day on shelves. GTAIV of course took the crown from Bungie and their $170 million opening day for Halo 3.
"This achievement is a reflection of the support from our community of fans around the world," said Infinity Ward’s creative strategist Robert Bowling in a statement to the press. "The Call of Duty series and Modern Warfare have been our passion - we've dedicated our lives to giving our best, so it's an honor to be recognized by setting a new standard among all entertainment properties."
Whether this achievement will affect the whole royalties dispute that’s part of the current war raging between IW and Activision remains to be seen. So for now, let’s just say: Congratulations Infinity Ward!
(After thought: I wonder how much of a boost MW2 sales received from the various special editions it received, specifically the night-vision goggled Prestige Edition. From what I remember, GTAIV didn't have multiple special editions. I don't think this could account for the entirety of the $90 million gap between GTAIV and MW2 sales, but it surely must have played some role. Don't you think?)

with all the internal, external and programming problems it has, im glad Kock- It , IW and Activision made their money. im happy for them , because its the last time ill buy a COD game.

Congrats, but they are still raking money in, from all the xboxs that scratch discs. I'm on my third copy.

Isn't there anyway they can patch the game to prevent the hacks and stuff? Maybe I'm just a bit naive, but I don't get how people can hack a disc based game. Cheat codes I completely get, but how do people hack it? Has anyone actually seen the hacks in person or online? What kind of hacks are there, meaning, what are honest players (like myself) up against?
I'm figuring I've probably been the victim of some cheats and hacks, but I just presumed that the player was better skilled than I am. But in relation to MW2 I'm constantly reading people complaining about hackers and cheaters. Not that I want to do any of that, I just want to see what I'm truly up against online and whether or not I should move to another game like MAG or Battlefield 2.

"If you dont like MW2 you suck at it". Give me a break. I've beaten every COD title on vet, I have the Mile High achievement, I have all 69 Spec Ops stars, I'm a level 55 tenth prestige in COD4, 2nd prestige level 40 in W@W and 4th prestige level 22 in MW2. So dont tell me I suck at the game because clearly I dont. I've just grown tired of this franchise. Its become too over the top, its filled with terrible spawns, hackers, campers, glitches, people that either talk or play like douche bags, the single player was weak, stupid and short and Spec Ops became really boring once you have beat all of them. Just accept the fact that COD2 and COD4 are vastly superior.

BFBC2 was not better than MW2. EA's lame servers totally ruined BF for me. Haven't played that game since a week after I bought it. I consider it one of my worst gaming investments ever, right underneath my PS3.
All the people who hate on IW are the people who suck at the game they themselves call a "noob game". If it's a noob game, why aren't you- with all your awesomeness- better than the noobs?

MW2 was great, i didnt buy it on launch and neither i have ever bought any game at launch, i just cant stand on line for hours, never that excited for a game. But if it was up to me, i really wish BDC2 got it, it was better than MW2. However, hats off to IW

The award should have gone to Bad Company 2 before MW2 tired of little wimps running around with marathon knifing me in the back. Because of course in real life you can run 20 miles an hour and no one can hear you as you act like a panzy.

well i hate CoD with all my heart and soul bc everyone thinks its sooo great but its such a piece of lame dog crap, and i know lots and lots of people who bought it (adding to those numbers) but sold it after they played it because they hated it. none the less the numbers speak for themselves so even if people hated it after they bought it, they wanted to buy it either way soooo from someone who wishes that no more CoDs would come out and stop ruining the image of gaming...congrats infinity ward
