Yesterday was a bad day to be a hacker, cheater, exploiter or digital nere-do-well. Game company Blizzard announced that it had banned over 320,000 supposed hackers from Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3. The suspected CD keys will be disabled for a month, and repeat offenders will suffer a perma-ban from battle.net. According to Blizzard, many of the banninations are a result of tips received from other gamers on Battle.net's report page, which you can visit here.
The forum post that announced the bannings reads:
We would like all players to remember that abuse of unintended mechanics and/or use of third party programs is a violation of the agreement made when signing on to Battle.net, and can subject your account to disciplinary action up to and including a permanent ban of its access to the service. These types of activities can severely impact the stability of our servers, and we’ll continue to aggressively monitor Battle.net in order to protect the service and its players from the harmful effects of cheating.
Although no specifics were mentioned by Blizzard, I assume most of the cheaters were running third-party software that gives them an unfair advantage through wall-hacks and the like. I'm also assuming that this is a pro-active attempt to clean up Battle.net of some its worst offenders before high-profile games like Starcraft II and Diablo III are commercially available. Also: I dislike people who cheat.

That is how you know blizzard is dedicated, they are banning people from 9 years old games hahaha :)

Even glitchers/exploiters, huh? Heheh; tight grip.
Goes to show that True Honor in the battlefield DOES rule..and apparently can wield the banhammer too.
Blizzard should program some AI like "The Guardians" in Halo, to stalk these players, and kill them every time they do some sketchy siht - "Data Drain" them of their level, skills, & equipment, just like when one gets attacked by AIDA in Dot.Hack//, bringing them back to Level 1 - stripping them of all their hard work.
But I like @miahdavis' idea too. LoL; it'd be completely funny to watch from a safe, separate server.

A friend once told me, "your not playing, until you're cheating"
Which is somewhat true but also stupid...
The ban hammer has been dropped, thank gawd!!!
Hopefully there won't be a lot of hackers for Starcraft 2! or any at all!

Infinity Ward could learn a lot from this.

Perma-band...yah, I like the sound of that. Not that it would have a chance
of actually alleviating the problem. Cheaters game any system put in their
way. Back in the Wild West they handled it old school. What would be cool
is if they sent in some Blizzard 'Sherriffs' to clean up the place. Some unstoppable
menaces they could program to seek out and kill characters as soon as they spawn.
Maybe avatars of the Grim Reaper...heh heh. I can imagine nothing worse than an 90th level
worthless character and everyone would know why they were after you so a bit of
public humiliation.

Hopefully this will get rid of the spam bots for atleast a short period of time. I join a game in D2 and i get some spam bot advertising websites to by gear.... super annoying!

Unless you are involved in international espionage I see no reason for hackers to exist. I have thought long and hard on this subject, since I have some friends that dabble in the art of hacking and it never made any sense to me. You spend your hard earned money on hardware/software, why cheat the system? How does one find hacking fun? As a joke I can see messing up someones game for a brief ha,ha, funny moment could be fun. But as a rule it just ruins the whole aspect of gaming. And when you are hacking through other peoples equipment (Blizzards Servers) it should be considered criminal. Hacking to me is like stealing, your stealing the fun from others. And that is why the people that I used to call friends are now more like acquaintances. It's stupid and wrong, and I don't want anything to do with it. These guys need to go HACK OFF!!!

I disagree completely! Removing the users wasn't the answer! MOVING their account to another server that's plagued with viruses, malware & spyware was the one true way to handle the situation. Could you imagine how funny that would be seeing them try to play on a connection slower than dial-up? And the server could of sent out mass spam to each user about things like Viagra, South African Royalty with $ to give you & things of this nature.
Do what you want Blizzard. Break out the same old boring BAN HAMMER.
knight5000
diablo 2 and warcraft 3? how about banning the gold spammers and account hackers in WoW? you know, that game u have that over 12 million people play??
dsa0224x
i dont get the reason why people hack, cheat or use exploits. i buy games to play for fun. if i cheat, or hack, then i just wasted my hard earned money. at least to a certain point Blizzard cares about their community by kicking out these thugs.... i wish i could say the same for games like CSS and MW2.
people who cheat/hack/ exploit= please throw them off a cliff for me.

Delete the parasites.

Here, here. You're lucky that's all that happens to ya
CustosIntusSilentium
The ban should come with a complimentary boot in the ass. Cheaters, hackers, and exploiters in all forms should be drug out into the street and shot, no spawn camped.
Godgolden
Its good to see blizzard cleaning house yet again.
JustTheBeginning
Good for them, but sadly it will not help much. Once you start hacking and stealing, it is almost impossible to stop because they really believe they are doing no harm.

But...Cheaters always win.
