Star Wars Blu-Ray Set Could Hit Sooner Than You Think

It seems that the future crown jewel of your Blu-ray collection is closer to reality than we thought. That's right, plans are now in the works for all of the Star Wars films to make the big format leap. Lucasfilm Director of Fan Relations Steve Sansweet revealed the info this past weekend at the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo (C2E2). He told IGN:

"We have been at work for a couple of years working on—I won't call it the Ultimate Set because we keep finding stuff—but, a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material. We're finding all kinds of scenes from dailies that have never been seen before. Beyond all of those things that you know about… there are some real treasures."

On the plus side, there shouldn't be any fan backlash similar to the recent release of the "no frills, theatrical" Lord of the Rings trilogy on Blu-ray. The last DVD (re-)release of the original Star wars Trilogy came in a box-set which contained the canonized CGI-laden "Special Edition" of the films, plus bonus discs containing the untouched original versions of the films. Therefore, despite Sansweet's assessment that it won't be an "Ultimate Set," I think we can safely assume that we'll at least get as much as that last version, which may be enough. (For now, anyway.) Plus, the promise of a plethora of extras and never-before-seen dailies is definitely enough to get any fan excited.

Will the idea of having all six films packed together appeal to most people?

Initially, it was actually surprising to me that the set would contain all six of the films, as each of the trilogies, beside being technologically different, have different sets of appeal among the casual fans/audio-visual enthusiasts who may make up a good portion of sales. (With the originals cherished by adults and the prequels preferred among younger audiences.) However, the idea of the "Blu-ray Mega Box-Set" has become a staple in the market of classic film reissues. If they had issued them separately, the Original Trilogy set would undoubtedly outsell the Prequel set by a large proportion. Similarly, if you look at the marketing strategy behind the Blu-ray releases of the vast library of James Bond films, you won't see box-sets containing films in chronological order, but rather, in mixed packs. Why? Because the sets with the Sean Connery films would ridiculously outsell the others. So, the all-six set is probably a must until the separate releases of the films later down the line.

While this is undoubtedly great news for Star Wars fans, they probably shouldn't hold their breaths just yet, as a release date has not been set. However, as Sansweet later commented: "We're not ready to announce exactly when it's coming out, but it won't be in the too distant future."

Are you excited for Star Wars on Blu-ray? Would such a set be worth the upgrade?
