Assassin's Creed II Sets World Record For Most Magazine Cover Appearances

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed might be the fastest selling new game IP of all time, but its bigger and even more successful brother, Assassin’s Creed II, now has a shiny new hook of its own on which to hang its own pride hat: a Guinness World Record.

Turns out that Ubisoft’s publicity machine worked just a bit harder than its competitors in 2009 as ACII found its way onto 127 magazine covers in 32 countries between April 2009 and April 2010, earning it the distinction of having appeared on more magazine covers than any game ever.

Managing director EMEA at Ubisoft Alain Corre said of the accomplishment, “The worldwide interest for the brand, coupled with the energy and creativity of our press team made for a winning combination and Ubisoft is proud to receive this Guinness World Record.”

And as the editor of Guinness World Records Gamer’s pointed out, “This achievement is even more impressive in view of the other 2009 releases that Assassin’s Creed II was able to beat.”

ACII definitely had stiff competition, between Modern Warfare 2 and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, but given the success of the first game and the chord it struck with a wide variety of gamers, I’m not that surprised Ubisoft was willing to promote the absolute hell out of it.
