It’s no secret that Sony took their sweet time to bring the PlayStation Network up to snuff. However, since Sony doesn’t charge for PSN access, the argument has long since been “you get what you pay for” whenever complaints were levied against the service. And yet, that hasn’t stopped 78 percent of PS3 owners from hooking up their consoles to the Internet, giving the PS3 the largest percentage of Internet connected consoles when compared to the Xbox 360 and Wii.
“Today's game consoles are increasingly connected to the internet, not just to enhance their gaming experience but to access the growing variety of online media-video," director of research for Diffusion Group told Gamasutra.
It’s not surprising that more PS3s are broadband connected, but I would have expected the percentage of consoles to be higher. There was no mention of why those 22 percent of PS3 owners aren’t online, but I’d be curious to know what the second most popular reason behind “no broadband access” is.
Are you surprised by these figures? Any PS3 owners out there not connected via broadband?

I've never had a problem with PSN and I'm surprised that they say xbox has the better online, With Xbox live you can't have a full fledged internet browser, You don't get xbox classics, so why pay more for what you've got on PSN? It's a o brainier that their online has so many people.

An added bonus with the PS3 is that it has wireless built in so you don't have to buy an additional adapter like the 360. So since it's so easy to connect + it being free works in the PS3's favor. Many people who may not have connected with the 360 due to the cost of the adapter and the cost of Live do with the PS3 because of this.

Let me start by saying that I own all 3 systems and I am really not suprised by this. For all the bad rap that the PSN gets sometimes, I haven't had a problem with it at all. I don't really use the Wii online because well it really doesn't have much to offer and the 360 frankly doesn't do anything better than the PSN and they charge you for it. Everything about the PSN is easier to navigate and purchase from I would actually think that number would be higher.

No one cares? My guess is why the PS3 has more online users is because its popular in Japan. But who gives a #$@%? lol

Not surprised. The twitter title for this article is very misleading, and I feel it might be misleading for readers who are reading it carelessly. I have to say that it makes sense a higher percentage of the ps3s out there are connected, for a few reasons: The online is free. There are less ps3s out there than 360s. Do the 360 numbers take into account Silver members? And even then, if you are a silver member, there is still little reason to be online.

This is a bit absurd. This isn't scientific. They just polled 2,000 people. lol....what a joke. figured that G4 would post non news just to get fanboys warring.

So a system that's got free online AND is usually owned by people smart enough to connect their console to the internet has taken the lead in percentage of online users. I think the real news here is that this wasn't announced sooner.

Funny thing. I own all 3 systems and while people arealways talking about how great the ps3 is, no one every mentions how god awful slow the online feature is to use.
What is this thing running, a 28.8k modem? I don't go online with it since it is too painful. But I do have a laptop and iTouch, so I have other, faster options.

I don't mean to be a tool, because I'm a huge xbox fan...Is it possible that since this is a percentage of sold consoles vs. online. My first possibility is going to hurt.
1)Some of the "sold" numbers of Xbox are broken and not even being used anymore
2)I've read some articles that say U.S. Soldiers are big xbox fans, they probably can't connect their xbox to live being over seas. Course this could influence PS3 numbers as well, depending on which console is the favorite among troops.
3)I'm sure there's plenty of PS3s that are "connected" but aren't even used online. It does have a nice WiFi feature that some might connect online.
I guess the data presented really doesn't extrapolate to any useful information. While interesting, I'm sure online gaming numbers and game sales mean a little more. Besides plenty of people don't know how percentages work,so it's a good way for Sony to make it look like there are more gamers online for Sony.

i wanted to say something, i work at Fry's Electronics, most of the people that i see buy PS3's buy movies with it, not games, so i think it might be fair to say that most of people are just using it as a media player, like using netflix maybe? and yeah, its like Variand says, its easier to connect, its more a of a "why not" kind of thing.

i hate reading the comments on g4 cuz everybody likes talking smack about my beloved xbox. yes yes we know the ps3 has some sexy features, but xbox is still great regardless. Leave the xbox 360 alone!!! :(

"My reckoning behind this: Wii's primary demographic is children with no reason to be on the internet since they shouldn't have access to credit cards to shop in the WiiWare stores... not to mention a lack of online games. and old people who basically dont have time/interest in connecting it."
how about the fact that nintendo's "friend codes" system has made it needlessly complicated & inconvenient to play most DS and wii games online, to such a degree that people who might be interested in online play probably just think "oh eff it, too much hassle just to play a videogame"?
Metalstorm98
I'm suprised it took this long to be honest... I love xbox live but psn is free
PunkALive21
people are forgetting that its free to make an xbox live account too. it just costsmoney to play games online and do anything, yet ps3 stil has more percentage.

There's multiple features to having an internet-connected PS3, or any system online for that matter. Some factors that helped Sony achieve these numbers are PSN being free, built-in WiFi, web browser, and other services like the PlayStation Store and PlayStation Home. For people that have broadband, a good way to make more use of that type of internet connection is to have a PS3 online and to use it's multiple services and features. Also online gaming grows everyday so it's important to have a good internet connection (usually broadband) in order to play online, no matter what system you're using.

i have 6 people at my school and just that ik that have ps3 but do not have internet, why? they do not feel secure on psn, they feel like since sony has no money going twords them as "leverage" to keep there info private that sony might give out there info to 3rd partys... idk it seems to make some sence but i just love mw2 and killzone 2 online too much to care! lbp is fun too, homelesppl1 hit me up!
