Just because Gears of War 3 brings an end to the story of Dom, Marcus and the planet of Sera's struggle against the Locust doesn't mean Gears of War is being laid to rest. Microsoft and Epic Games left themselves plenty of wiggle room in the press release announcing Gears of War 3.
"Developed by acclaimed studio Epic Games and available only on Xbox 360, 'Gears of War 3' plunges players into a harrowing tale of hope, survival, and brotherhood that will conclude the current story arc for 'Gears of War.' With the last human city destroyed and the remaining survivors stranded, time is running out for Marcus and his comrades as they fight to save the human race from the jaws of extinction."
The key phrase there is "current story arc." There's nothing stopping future Gears of War games. It's a similar position BioWare has taken with the Mass Effect franchise. Even though Mass Effect was pitched as a trilogy, the success of the series means Mass Effect could have life after the conclusion of Shepard's tale. Based on what we know, both franchises won't be dying anytime soon.
Gears of War 3 will be released on Xbox 360 on April 2011.

Really? What the hell is wrong with kids today.. This is a gears of war article, stop even mentioning halo and bungee. They are both trash and in no way compare to gears or epic, and never will. Sadly, there will be a lot of remedial replies to this, which I will laugh at. And not to crush anyones hopes or dreams, but there will not be another gears after 3. Say/think what you want, there won't be. I would love to see more after 3 more than anyone, but it won't happen.

Just talking about this on my site, the gears world is huge the first takes place 15 years after E day they have tons of room for prequels for the current story arch from Gears-Gears 3 shows the end of the war so there can be numerous story arch's for gears. Marcus,Dom Delta Squad in the beginning of the War, the Middle of the War to tie the whole story together. Then they can do Parallel Story Arch's to feature a different Squad during the beginning, middle, end of the war, that Parallel's the delta squad journey. There is millions of possibilities to take the Franchise in the future as long as it makes money Epic left those holes to the game in multiple directions. Cliff B. even states a recent announcement that the more they pull out of Unreal Engine 3 & the eventual release of Unreal Engine for that the Gears Franchise can do nothing but Grow.

If they don't do a prequel or inter-quel, after Gears 3 ends, then they might just redo the same timeline of events (post E-Day).
Only, instead of having it from the COG perspective, they could approach it from the UIR perspective (the opposing faction in the Pendulum Wars), and how THEY handled the coming onslaught of the Locust Horde..[there were still remnant UIR forces/soldiers around after E-Day, between the events of Gears 2 & Gears 3 - Gorasnaya Republic]..
..or if not the UIR, maybe even from a Stranded's perspective.
Who knows..

but i thought it epic said this is the last of the series. well i know most of you want more of the gears series but i would like to see it as just one awsome trilogy with no prequels and no sidecrap.

Pendulum Wars aka Halo Wars for Gears - I'd totally play it but then again I enjoyed Halo Wars. Get Ensemble back up and running for it!

this is great i love the gears of war campaign(multiplayer not so much) and mass effect. i think the next gears of war game will be a prequel based on the book aspho fields, that would be sick. mass effect and gears of war are probably goin to be like halo. continue with a halo wars, possibly a odst, type game, with a COG, or alliance officer, and finally finishing with the prequel. i really would like to see an aspho fields game, with all of the crew younger, like teenagers. oh how i would love to see that.

The only way to keep a story going after the end of a trilogy is with a Prequel. Just like JDarkley stated Pendulum Wars would probably be the most predictable route for them to take with the story. Then we'll see whats the big deal over Marcus's father, and we'll understand more of what led to this epic end of the world battle!!

That would be pretty cool to make a trilogy based of the Pendulum Wars, especially if it somehow played differently than fighting the Locust.

There already is a prequal, but its a book kind of like halos "the fall of reach". Its called Gears of War: Aspho Feilds. The author is Karen Traviss for those of you with a sudden intrest. Oh and it does follow Marcus' story arc.

I think it would be pretty sweet if they do a Gears game about the Pendulum Wars. That's the war between the COG and the UIR (the other people of Sera)... what? You didn't all read the book? Yeah.. me neither..
