Morning Hangover #71 -- Andrew Looks For Feedback, Patrick Has TV Envy

Some interesting developments yesterday and last night, wouldn't you say? Former Infinity Ward leaders Vince Zampella and Jason West are setting up their new shop with Electronic Arts, the company that just recently announced that they'll be publishing Bulletstorm from People Can Fly, the majority of which is owned by Epic Games...whose Internet, and now television-famous designer Cliff Bleszinski just revealed the first Gears of War 3 trailer on Jimmy Fallon's late night show.

Everything's related, and we want your questions for this week's episode of Feedback. Drop 'em in the comments below.

I understand that the videogame industry is growing up and that these kind of corporate-designer lawsuits are somewhat part of that, but I think that there are some very big differences than the music or movie industry. The first being that gamers seem to be a lot more informed about the internal affairs of their favorite companies. Because of this, players seem to be very impassioned when it comes to things like lawsuits. It often turns into a "David vs the Corporate Goliath" kind of situation for the fan of a particular company. I know, that's not always necessarily true, but when will companies like activision realize that it's very bad PR for themselves to try and sue a company that has Millions upon Millions of followers for what looks like (to the fans) a very silly reason?

Some people really like the mark and execute feature and some of the more hard core players dont like it, im kinda in the middle ground i think its kinda easy in the fact if when you get it you press one button its a kill (givin the range) you do have to earn it but since its a stealth game you where going to try and sneak behind and take them out anyway i think a good idea to have done something like what fallout did with vatts and have a percentage of killing the target that way its the perfect middle ground

with the onlive beta just now going live, what are somethings that you look forward from their service, what pricing would you think is reasonable, and what games would you look forward to playing?

If Vince Zampella and Jason West are victorious, will this spark a greater trend for game developers to be pulling away from publishers? Just a random thought, but what would the likelihood and implications concerning a game developer union?

Why are so many people shocked to see a girl in the new Gears trailer. Girls love feeling like bad asses and they have very few female roles that are even the slightly relatable.

Also how many guys out there are playing some hot WoW character? A lot of guys out there like using female avatars to do bad ass things and look sexy doing it.

    Kudos for Epic.

Do you guys think the success of indie games on XBLA, PSN, and WiiWare, as well as the success of Heavy Rain indicates that the more mainstream gaming audience is taking a turn for the better in terms of appreciating the games that deserve it?

Also, do you think that, even though the PSP go wasn't well recieved, and whether or not OnLive will be successful, will digital download be the future of gaming? (Before you answer, consider Steam, XBLA, PSN, and WiiWare)

Do you think that Gears of War 3 being announced on a popular late night television show means the general population (gamers or not) are becoming more interested in video games and do you think that it could possible get a few more people to buy the game that may not have gotten it before?

Is this whole Fall of Duty/ Activision lawsuit situation good or bad for gamers?

It seems that as communicative media develop, they go through three stages:
    1) Introduction to a technology (written words, movies, and now video games)
    2) Proliferation into various genres (comedy, action, horror, suspense, drama)
    3) Cultural acceptance of all forms, light-hearted and serious, and ultimately educational

That being said, will video games ever be viewed in the same light as books or movies? Do you think anyone will ever take video games seriously as (dare I say it?!) an educational tool?

    I have two questions which have been on my mind as I am playing Just Cause 2;

    1) Do you think that Just cause two will have any effect on spider-man and the web-slinging since they are closely related?

    2) Do you see the future of gaming being a needle in a haystack style gaming to lengthen play time like in just cause 2

Nintendo is really taking bold steps toward its future as a company. They finally don't seem afraid to take the risk that gamers have demanded as well as some completely from left field. It's present looking at its software like Other m, Zelda(wii and spirit tracks) Pokemon black & white, not to mention their franchise games that hopefully will be announced in the near future we haven't seen on the Wii yet. In terms of hardware we still have the mysterious vitality sensor and the 3DS just around the corner as well as anything else they decide to pull out.

With all of these new tactics that nintendo is putting out there how do you guys think this will affect the company and there image. Will people expect more changes than we already have? What do u expect from them next and do you think this trend will continue.

p.s. Nintendo needs to stop making announcing so randomly and do it in more of a formal manor. do u agree?

A bit late into this, but I hope it can be brought up to light in some way or fashion. :) With recent events in the gaming industry that have been released, there has always been a small minority who simply cannot agree or tolerate the news eith before, during, or after the launch of a popular or "different" game, whether it is based on price (the Modern Warfare Stimulus Package), art direction (Diablo III), content (GTA IV/Six Days in Fallujah), reviews (just about any exclusive game), and etc. We see this in many other aspects of the world too, like the latest thing in Hollywood, Washington, or the Facebook design changes. Altough this minority usually just shuts up after a while and the community accepts these games as what they are, we continue to have these people complaining of some aspect of this releases. Is this minority that continues to whine and grope a serious issue in the gaming industry, or just another fly to swat at?

Seriously, what if they fail? I'm hoping Microsoft has something concrete to show at E3. So far it's just videos and Peter Molyneux's hype machine. The Move demonstrations did not thrill me. I know the Wii sold big and dominates console units sold because it went for the entire family instead of just the resident gamer and it had a very competitive price at release.

It was, of course, cheap because it's graphics and over all technology were somewhat less than what Microsoft and Sony had in their systems. So I guess the selling point for Move is "Motion control gaming in HD". A better overall experience than what you ever got on Wii in terms of visuals and control. The demonstration with S.O.C.O.M frightened me. I don't want this gimmicky mechanic in my Triple-A next gen titles. I've made this comment before but I can't see how the experience of playing Assassin's Creed would somehow be better if I were "dual-wielding" Move controllers for assassinations.

I can't even really comment on Natal as there has really been anything to comment on. So you can just scan everyday objects into it? Does it read my whole body? Can I just move and the avatar on screen moves with me? That actually sounds pretty cool. Much better than a Wii-mote or a Move...wand? Instead of just controlling or changing one object, I could possibly manipulate and entire world with just a few hand gestures. That sounds very sci-fi and very cool to me. Even if it isn't as grand as I envision it, anything close to that would be outstanding.

But what if it's goofy? What if it's just unwieldy and spotty on targeting and object reading? In other words, what i it fails? Microsoft and Sony have, I'm sure, sunk a lot of money and careers into these projects looking for a Wii type success or possibly bigger. Anyways, what do you think? Do you even want motion control on your console? At one time I did but now I just don't know. The Wii was awful for "hardcore" gamers who are basically the gaming population in general. Will new innovations in motion control flood the 360 and PS3 with loads of gimmicky one shot crapware?(another Super Monkey Ball?) I hope to find out soon. Patiently waiting for E3.

Since it seems we may be finally seeing the maturing of games as a whole do any of you think that we will also see a change in the name of from "game" to something more mature as well? if we do see a new name what would that be? would the ESRB be involved?

I am glad to see that games are being presented in a way that rivals film. It was great to see Cliff Bleszinski make an appearance on Fallon. In the long run, though, did it really matter at his point? A premiere of a trailer was great but did it have an impact at all? We can see the same thing on G4, Gametrailers, IGN, etc. Are we at the point where games are being regarded in the same way that film is or are we not there yet?

I just finished Splinter Cell: Conviction's campaign, and there was something I noticed. Several times throughout the game, you use "enhanced interrogation techniques" to obtain information required to proceed in the story. God of War III also had similar torture-based QTEs during certain boss fights (and a certain rather discomforting shift in perspective during such a scene), and I'm beginning to wonder how games can appropriately tackle such a tricky subject. Do you feel that video games are approaching torture in gameplay in an appropriate manner?

There has been a lot of talk about the length of Splinter Cell Conviction, or in this case the lack thereof. Do you find that you are liking shorter, well paced and directed games more than the large open world games that typically do not have a direction for the player? Is the "dollar per hour" argument valid and does your ease of access to games affect your perception? After all, you guys don't have to pay $60+ to have a game.
