Apple did a great job of guiding iPhone users through all the great updates coming to iPhone OS 4.0 sometime this summer, all the while neglecting to mention the biggest addition -- multitasking -- won't be available on iPhone 3G. It also won't work on the original iPhone, and the first two releases of the iPod Touch. Count me in the camp with a still-kicking iPhone 3G.
Am I alone here? How many of you decided to make the upgrade to the iPhone 3GS? I decided to hold off, since my contract wasn't up yet. Video recording functionality and the ability to boot Peggle faster wasn't enough to convince me to upgrade out of contract, but now that I'm able to subsidize a new phone, I'm game. The problem, of course, is Apple hasn't announced a new phone yet.

I have a smart phone, but I found I mainly use it for texting and phone calls. Thus far I really only use the data connection for getting movie showtimes when I'm not at home. The Iphone with its apps and games just don't hold much appeal for me. I am typically the driver not a flyer so I don't play games on the go and the games just seem so meh when compared to a console or pc options. Some of the apps are nice, but most are just frivolous wastes of time (which is the point for some). I guess I am just too old school for an iphone.

I'm still holding for the same exact reason.the 3GS wasn't enough to convince, and in my opinion itstill isn't. Thisis what apple usually does wait for the competition to cathch up and then make a great jump in front of them, plus we all know that apple's gonna rereleasing a new iPhone soon

Totally! Left 4 Dead 2 was one of my favorite games!

i'm 23 and i dont know anyone with an iphone let alone a iphone 3g... i know plenty of people with smartphones, but no i phone users.... i guess when i got to know people in college, i didnt bother making friends with people that had a macbook infront of them :p

Don't worry Patrick. Apple is sure to release the successor to the 3GS before or at the same time the new OS is released. You won't be left out unless you want to be two models behind instead of just one.

I've had all the iterations of the iPhone since the beginning! I've loved them all. I was able to upgrade in contract and gave my wife the 3G that I had. Lol. So I'll be able to multitask and she won't be able to. Not that it's the phone that's stopping her though, she can't multitask with a pad and pen! Anyway, I'm really excited to check out the new features. If I hadn't upgraded to the 3GS already though this late in the game I would probably wait until they announce (or not) a new version. If they don't then go for it Patrick! It is worth the upgrade if you can do it without paying the insane fee when you're not eligible for upgrade.

Patrick, whatever you do, do not upgrade yet to the 3GS. Apple is rumored to unveil their next phone in June and you could get that but you could also wait until they unveil it and then the 3GS goes way down in price. Waiting would be your best choice.

I have 1st gen iphone. I was going to upgrade to a 3gs soon but instead am waiting for the next version.

I'm a 3G owner also and passed on the upgrade last year for the same reasons. Not enough changes for me to drop $300 again so soon. This year the REAL decision maker for me is if Verizon gets into the game later this year. Hopefully they don't get a watered down version of the iphone compared to what AT&T gets.

I too have a 3G. I'm a little disappointed they we won't be getting the multitasking. I bought my phone a little over a year ago, so I'm not sure if I can upgrade even if they do announce a new one.

Patrick, if you are elegible for an upgrade, hold out for just a bit longer. Although the 3GS sounds promising because it will support multitasking, I'm sure Apple is going to announce a 4th generation iPhone. I'm sure it will do things that the 3GS doesn't. But if Apple doesn't announce new hardware, get the 3GS. I was fortunate enough to get the 3GS as my first iPhone, so I am good to go.

If you have an iPhone, you have yearly equipment upgrade. I've been getting a new one yearly at the contract price

I'm still rocking a 3G, my contract is coming up soon, but I probably won't upgrade until they announce a new phone and it can be jailbroken.

Until my contract is up, I won't be upgrading. I don't have the spare cash to upgrade out of contract (well not while keeping up with games coming out anyway).

I too lost my fully functional an operational battle st... wait I mean fully functional 3G about a month and a half ago. It made me mad since this was the year my contract was up and ATT service is horrible in my area so I was looking forward to the possibility of getting a Verizon phone or if absolutely necessary the new ATT iPhone. But luckily I lost my phone after I was eligible for early upgrade and so I now own a 3GS, which runs on the midichlorian netwo...wait thats the force I'm still with ATT.

Well I have T-mobile so I have a G1 and I'll be getting a Nexus one soon, but my manager just upgraded to a 3GS by coincidence yesterday, because he lost his last phone. When I told him that it was just annouced multitasking was coming he was mad happy.
