TGS 09: Splinter Cell: Conviction First Hands-On Impressions

I can't really explain why I've never played a Splinter Cell game.

As a huge fan of Metal Gear Solid (at least the first and third installments), it would've made sense to check out the stealth game competition at some point, but it just never happened. Eventually, my lack of experience with the series acted as a deterrent for checking out the sequels. "I'll just pass on this series," I told myself. Splinter Cell: Conviction, though...I'm not going to be able to resist this one, and since Ubisoft seems to be treating this as a reboot of Splinter Cell, I'll be on board this month.

Anyone else joining Splinter Cell without any connections to its past?

I am an SC virgin, but this one looks like it will open me up to experimentation. I haven't really liked other Tom Clancy games, but the demo for this sold me on it. I am looking forward to seeing how the multi-player is when I pick this up on Tuesday.

Splinter Cell: Conviction is going to be a great game for newcomers. The game has been made quite accessible with Mark and Execute and Last Known position making the game less punishing then past iterations. And also co-op mode is less threatening then a full on adversarial mode.

This one is more like a action game with a little stealth,so its for everyone. The other splinter cell games were 4 hardcore gamers.

i played them all starting with pandora tomorrow, and they were all really good, even both versions of double agent, 1 for wii and the other for 360

Ive played chaos theory and some of double agent. I suggest you download chaos theory on games on demand. Its very good and even visually, aged pretty well. Story wise, I have no idea whats going on (because Ive only played one full SC game), but the basics are all there for "Conviction"- avenge daughter. I can do that.

I've always enjoyed games like this, but I think the Tom Clancey name threw me off. Not sure why. I've added this to my gamefly queue so I'll probably get around to playing it. I guess the commercial for it made me put it in the queue. What can I say, I'm a sucker for Johnny Cash songs. And "Gods gonna cut you down" is awesome.

Those of you who didn't play any of the others are missing out. I have chaos theory and I played through double agent. You have to think outside the box in order to beat some of those missions. Hearing about conviction a few years ago is is what made me go back and play the others.

I was also a huge metal gear solid fan, MGS3 for the ps2 was probably my favorite game. I have never played a Splinter cell game but after playing the demo i am pretty excited for this game. The single player looks awesome and even if i haven't played the co op portion of the game, that's the part i am looking forward to playing the most.

My inability to intuitively play Splinter Cell: Double Agent resulted in having to constantly reference an internet guide merely to advance through the single player storyline. This lead to a level of frustration that made me quit playing before I had gotten halfway through the game.

This was my only experience with the franchise and because of this, even though I am intrigued by the reboot of the Splinter Cell, I will be waiting until I read some reviews before I consider buying the game.

I've played them all. I'm a huge fan and I'm really looking forward to Conviction.

I didn't actually get hooked on Splinter Cell until after Chaos Theory came out. I actually saw a special on G4 (it might've been "G4 Tech TV" at the point...) called "Icons" where they went through the whole creation of the first three games. I was fascinated, and decided I wanted to have a go at the games. I bought the first game for like $10, and was hooked. I got the other two, each after I finished the preceding game, and loved those as well. Eventually I got a 360, and Double Agent was the first game I bought for it. I loved that game as well.

Just thought it was interesting how I got hooked on the series. I suppose I should say thanks to G4 for getting me hooked way back in the day. So yeah, thanks!

woah sure is SC n00b in here.
Not a fanboy, but i enjoy my stealth game. The last game in the series lacked all the stealth, but the online was a blast, too bad the maps' "same old same old" killed it.

I hope this game brings back more stealth aspects but agree it is also n00b friendly. I suggest doubters try it we won't really know till we play it.

This will be my 1st mission as Mr. Fisher but im really looking forward to it. I loved the demo. Ive watched my buddies play the older splinter cell games but they always seem so slow! It must be hard to make a fast/stealth game. (Is that an oxymoron?) But It looks like this could be it.

This is the first time I'll be playing a splinter cell game, and like Patrick after I missed the boat on the first game I never felt good stepping into the sequels. I notice Patrick left out metal gear solid 2 which was the first metal gear I played, and it was the last one I played, but since splinter cell conviction started getting bigger and bigger buzz I'm starting feeling like I missed out on this genre of gaming. Although metal gear 2 soured me stepping into a game with such a deep story, the excitement of conviction via the demo, the trailers, and the developer interviews has me wanting to go back and play the other games in both metal gear and splinter cell series.

I remember when Splinter Cell first came out it looked cool with a guy in full stealth gear, but at the time I didn't really like stealth games so I passed. I actually just recently got into stealth games, but I think I am still going to pass, because it honestly doesn't look as apealing as it used to.

    Here come the tumbs down....lol

Huge MGS fanboy, loved all of em that were on the non-hand held systems(yes, even #2). So far as the Splinter Cell series? I've played a little here and there in the past, but never actually played any of the games to their completion. In fact, I don't think any of them actually held me for more than a couple of levels. Don't know why, must have been pulled away by something more intriguing. New game however, I am on board fo this one. Hope it rocks as much as I'm thinkin it will...

I really didn't pay attention to Splinter Cell until this game. I ignored the comercials and reviews. But I can't wait for this one.
