Video game visionary Hideo Kojima is predicting the death of the console. At a recent Japanese press conference, the Metal Gear creator said, “In the near future, we’ll have games that don’t depend on any platform... Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel — wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience.”
At the same press conference, Kojima revealed that PSP game Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will include Monster Hunter content. Check out the picture, from Japanese gaming bible Famitsu:

How many years do you think consoles have left?

I will give it about 10-20 years. When handheld technology finally catches up with consoles, things will change for the better. Developers just have to execute everything the right way.

maybe game developers should stick to making games. i like the console and from what it sounds like other people do to. technology for a console will always be the best.
sorry kojima i respect you and all but that statement is just plan wrong. and the competition just makes games better.

As long as developers are willing to explore the darkest and farthest regions of their creative minds, to always strive to make a better game, and to tell a story no one has heard before, then i do believe consoles will live on.
*another side* I still play NES, SNES, N64 and whatnot even though their technology is severely obsolete, i prefer their games *some times* over present day games.
So if consoles do "die out" i'll still be playing past generations, and i hope all of you will as well.

Before consoles could die out, the console companies and game companies would have to die out/merge, and I don't think that Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony will merge any time soon.. I wonder what that would be like though.. that company would be the world's main supplier of everything haha.

i kno this might b a lil off topic but snakes about to b eaten by that tigrex...

Consoles wont die because the big three (Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony) won't let that happen. There's money to be made in consoles and the three companies aren't going to give that up or give up 1st party support which is also big for business. The only way it would work is by download yet you would still need some sort of storage and service installed (a console) to get the games and they would be too big to download anyway. Ps3 games are upwards of 30gb, the fastest internet services would take days for something that size. Maybe way in the future, if the companies get together with television providers where you can go to a Playstation Channel for example and order new games (like PPV) and store them on your Cable box, then a console wouldn't be needed; just a wireless controller, coded to the software. Though there would still be at least three sources; Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony. There will never be just one place to get all games.

Kojima will be dead before consoles die out.

Either way, if you want quality.. you need a console. You aren't going to be playing God of War 3 on an ipod touch..

Consoles aren't going anywhere anytime soon. This is like predicting that we will have flying cars in the year 2010. Hell, we don't even have the hoverboard yet.
vision777
I think he is referring to the ability to play games over the web where you just have a controller and display on your end and the game and processors to play the game actually reside at some central site. Once internet connections get fast enough this is probably going to be the way games are delivered. No buying new consoles or worrying about how the game will play on your system since the game is housed on a remote system.

The Game looks awesome, but I'ma wait until PSP2 comes out

and today is the day Kojima tries crack.

I love when people make predictions like this. It probably will happen, but the timelines are almost always wrong. The two biggest ones that come to my mind (in my lifetime)are Digital Television and VHS to DVD. Consoles may go away, but not for a couple of decades.

I am reminded of the PS9 concept that was shown in commericals for the PS2. Take your games with you and breath in your games wherever you go.

"Games anywhere, on the go..."
Kojima has forgotten that the future never lives up to its expectations. Because if it did, flying cars would be readily available five years from now.

truth be told I think PC well soon be dead and consoles well take over, we can just about do everything with consoles today it just one more step tell we can play pc games on them
Dynamo903
Doesn't surprise me. We all know deep down inside that the console will fade away eventually and in our life times. Question is when.
Kinda makes me glad I'm a PC gamer though. :P
ZyloWolfBane
As long as there is money to be made off of blind fanboys there will always be a company specific console.
Its not even really a matter of how advanced systems will be by then, its just basic economics.
jungleman67
i really wish there would be one new console. just one with all three supporting it. no more competition for consoles. then it would work
azura20
He's saying consoles will die, and helping reinforce his own statement by putting monster hunter in a metal gear game. :P
I wont say he's wrong, because at the start of each format, it's hard to imagine a new one (from phonograph to Mp4, etc. most said that each new format would be the best we will get. -.-), and for as many consoles as we have had, they may all be under an "era" title in the future.
