DICE Content With Never Charging For DLC

Battlefield: Bad Company 2

Infinity Ward and DICE both released downloadable content packs for their respective military shooters yesterday. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s Stimulus Package hit Xbox 360, while Battlefield: Bad Company 2’s VIP Map Pack released for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The biggest difference between the two batches of DLC? Price.

While the MW2 Stimulus Package cost 1200 Microsoft Points ($15), DICE released their DLC for free (unless you buy Bad Company 2 used in which case you have to throw down $15 to buy a VIP code to download the DLC). Ultimately, the pricing decision is the publisher’s call; in this case, EA and Activision. But as DICE senior producer Patrick Bach told Xbox World 360 magazine (via Computer and Videogames), the free DLC approach initially came from DICE.

“We don’t ever want to charge for our maps and insisted to EA that this attitude was crucial when it came to keeping our community happy and playing together,” said Bach.

DICE has said they have more DLC plans in the works, and, clearly, if they have their way, it will continue to be free. However, despite Bach’s insistence that “We’re owned by EA but we’re still very much DICE,” if EA calls for a price tag for DLC, it’s hard to imagine DICE really being able to do anything about it. Thankfully, DICE has the fans love on their side, and that is always the most desirable shield to have when it comes to dealing with major publishers eyeing that bottom line.

If DICE decided to charge for Bad Company 2 DLC, what would you be willing to pay for it? Do you think the MW2 DLC is overpriced or worth every cent?

If you are reading this, stop what you're doing and go buy Battlefield Bad Company 2. Sell Modern Warfare 2 if you have to. I've played both games and by far BFBC2 is the superior product. You'll thank me later for this!

P.S> "Bad Company" refers to Activision and its poor management of Infinity Ward.

Although free is infinitely better, I have no problem paying for map packs as long as the maintain the current price point for map packs (i.e., $10, 800 MS Points, etc.).

I would refuse to pay any more than that, which is why I'm not paying for COD:MW2's maps and now switching over to BF:BC2. It's frankly a better game anyway.

the reason the maps are fee. is because the game sucks. sniping on that game is a joke. and runing around corners in bulidings is a nightmare. COD is the backbone of all FPS. everyone copys off them and still cant even compare to it. the maps are a liitle steep. but thats activsion for you. i cant wait to play the new maps.

Not only is the MW2 dlc over priced but MW2 itself is over rated. Now about EA,if they do charge for dlc in the future i WILL pass because at the games launch they harped on the fact that if you hurry up and buy it right away you get the vip pass.....so if they start charging soon then what the hell was the big deal? BF2BC imo is more fun and way better then MW2 for online but thats just me as for now i will go back to unlocking trophies online so i can grab that platinum.

Its a good move by DICE. They're really pushing to take down the giants in the FPS genre and it might actually work. Halo has lost a lot of its steam since the franchise has become stale and repeative and COD is falling into an over the top and utterly stupid mp experience. DICE is setup to take them down and free dlc isn't hurting their cause.

I dont mind paying and I really don't care about the price. Who am I to tell the devs what to charge? I have no authority, experience, or anything to tell these people how to run THEIR business, and if people have such a rager about cost on DLC well you don't have to buy it.

I want to say that I have a lot of fun playing both Bad Company 2 and Modern Warfare 2. Both games offer a distinct play style that the other doesn't. It does bother me to see so many angry people out there, but I guess you can't really avoid that with the internet. The DLC for Bad Company 2 shouldn't really be called a map pack in my opinion. It's not providing any new maps, just different play modes on existing maps so it should be considered an update or patch rather than a full fledged map pack. Even though the change of game modes on the BC2 maps does change how the maps may play it doesn't change them enough to charge for them. I think its a nice update to offer to people who input their VIP codes, and it gives the consumer the feeling of getting more for their dollar.

You can't compare the two map packs in my opinion, because MW2 got five new maps, everyone says its only 3 and two are old, but are any of those maps from the first MW available for MW2? no, so they are new maps. The gameplay changes from MW to MW2 make the maps play just a bit differently, and they're great maps so I don't see the sense in complaining period. From a logistical/fiscal perspective EA should be offering more free content to VIP code holders for BC2 simply because in this case it is very much the underdog. With the latest Live update showing BC2 to be third most played they need to do some extra things and provide some fan service. I would pay for new BC2 content provided that it was new content, not just updated existing maps to play on different game modes and I shall continue to pay for MW2 dlc as well. Both these games are in my current playlist and I look forward to seeing what both parties offer down the line for DLC.

Personally I like both MW2 and BFBC2. Battlefield is a more quality experience, but something about it just doesn't grab me like MW2 does. Must be gameplay differences.

EA is playing the smart financial market with its biggest games (Mass Effect 2 and BFBC2). If you buy the game new, they make a profit. If you buy the game used, you're most likely to buy the $15 dollar VIP card, they make a profit off a copy of the game they already made a profit on. It's smart for them and good for us. Pretty much everyone wins. I hope other publishers adopt this.

The only DLC that I have bought from CoD that I could even justify the price tag was WaW Zombies... That was a blast and a crazy spin on CoD. I too agree with the majority here in stating that 2 old maps + 3 new maps never should = 15 dollars. Ridiculous...

I thought the DLC release for BF2 was going to be a bit lame but after playing all the new content, I must say... very impressive for FREE! Keep up the fantastic work EA/DICE and can't wait for the rest!

If you have to join some network, whether its a VIP or Cerberus, then ALL the DLC should be free. It's smacks of corporate greed when they charge a used game owner $$ to join a network then more $$$ to get DLC.

It's getting to the point where we may be getting incomplete games that we still pay full price for, only to be nickle and dimed after the fact for content that should of been included in the game. Remember console games used to cost $50 new, now the cost is up 10 bucks. SO they don't "need" cash to cover the mythical "higher costs" they always tell us exists.

DICE nailed it! Let's keep the gamers happy. Even if they eventually charge for DLC it would probably be only 5 dollars or so.

With the dedicated servers(no lag), and free map packs it is only a matter of time before the CoD franchise disappears, and rightfully so.

PS- Can't wait for the new SOCOM!

If DICE or EA decided they needed to charge money for DLC, I think a one time VIP renewal would be the best way to go. Pay another 10 or 15 bucks and have continued DLC support for X amount of time.
