Indie games have been making a huge splash recently, thanks in part to XBLA, PSN, and all-inclusive gaming conventions like PAX. Fresh off the plane from PAX East in Boston, Adam was so impressed by all the independent games he saw on the floor he decided to use them as the subject for this week's Soapbox. Do you regularly browse the Indie Games section on XBLA? Do you read about small indie projects on gaming blogs and track their development until they find a method of publishing? Let us know what, if anything, indie games mean to you.

supporting "Indie Games" is about as worthy a cause as supporting oh i don't know, Fox Searchlight. they are supposed to be giving indie movies more fo a chance and bigger budgets. but it's just a money grab. obviously. so to support indie games when i have no idea where they get their funding from is a rediculous notion. developers and investors will reward what they deem to be good games, therefore indie games will find a way into the mainstream. but uh oh their indie-ness is gone now because they sold out...so basically Adam Sessler what you're asking us to do in supporting indie games, is to help indie developers to sell out.
Case in Point: Bungie
this is one of the fundemental problems with capitalism, it subverts true independance by luring said independants into the mainstream thereby selling out and eventually becoming apart of the big corporate machines anyways.
support for independants is ultimately handing your money over to a big studio developer, so you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. sorry indie's but it's supposed to be tough to be independant.
Heartland
I just want to play a game.
:D
Reign90
Well Adam...you're the one with a TV show...what about giving some of Xplay's time to talking about indie games? Better yet (since that'd just produce added time strain for Xplay) why not just make a NEW show devoted to indie games? God knows it'd keep me from changing the channel whenever COPS comes on G4.

Adam If You Don't Want To Get Sick Take 1 Pill A Day Of GNC'S Ultra Mega Gold Vitamin with Iron and 1000 IU's of Vitamin C a day and make sure their time released. I Take this combination each day along with one Green Tea and have not been sick in over 2 years. Trust Me It Works. But I Agree Indie Games Get No Love Like Bytejacker.com is really good but I hear about indie games from random friends not too many get mad press.
lowkevmic
@Unfungames-No he just said show some consistancy. Indie games get all types of ohhs and ahhs from G4, because they want to seem cool and as if they are supporting the little underground indie developers. Which is total crap!! I play all types of fun and awesome games, all independent, on the internet all the time!! Those games get no love. Simply because it's not a studio that's backed by Xbox or Sony. The two games mentioned by Timidiman (Dante's Inferno and Darksiders) were ripped a new one for doing everything these indie games on XBLA get so much praise for. Which is take the same idea we've seen a million times over, but just give it some fun animated campy flare, then all of a sudden were overlookin a hidden gem according to Mr Sessler.
Those two games, although full priced, are very fun games which I still play now. But since they weren't "indie" titles, they were rip offs of God Of War...Go figure.
Reign90
Well....you're in the entertainment biz, make a tv show about indie games (I wouldn't use Xplay's time, because there probably wouldn't be enough and it'd be inconsistent in it's airing). God knows it'd give me a reason to keep from changing the channel whenever COPS comes on G4.

So basically you are the Danny Glover of video game reviewers.
Look at it this way, there were how many ? Lethal Weapon movies, and I don't think he ever retired. Almost exploded when evil drug lords taped a bomb to his toilet though. Watch out for that.
unfungames
ug....I don't count this as indie gaming. These are fully funded studios reaching millions of gamers (because sites like this are willing to discuss their titles). If they make good titles then they will be successful. My company is an indie gaming company. I've made games for a decade and I have no funding other than the money I've made. You don't get more indie than that. I've survived because I've made titles that people want to play, but apparently these "little" studios with 50 employees turning out web-quality games and getting $5 million dollar investments are having problems. Poor babies!...make better games. Stop ripping off Earthworm Jim/Tetris. Then maybe your games will sell.
Tmidiman
Adam, It's a good idea to support indie games, but how about showing some consistancy and supporting non-indie games as well? Many indie games are similar in that they are side scrollers, but they also try to mix in new ideas and stories.
At the same time other games like Dante's Inferno and Darksiders do the same thing. Sure they use elements we are familiar with, but they bring new ideas and stories as well.
The main thing is that a game should be fun to play, which both games are, but your game critics slam them just because they have elements that other games have. Do they slam independant games as well?
Then again a game can do the same thing year after year and even have terrible game play and it gets a high rating,...cough,cough madden, cough, cough.
How about some consistancy?
Notafanboythatiknow
I have never been a fan of indie games (probably because I am a console gamer and rarely use my PC for gaming). The two screens of Shank and Comic Jumper look like fun games I would play. As a non-XBOX 360 owner (I have a PS3), I cannot access the XBLA. I agree with Top__Cat, PSN will be a great place for indie games.
Mr. Sessler, thanks for your reflections, and you succeeded in making this reader curious about indie gaming.
zenmastersamuraimonk
the games need to be paused while your talking cuz i dont pay attention to anything you say while im watching the game in the background.
Im_With_Stupid_
There is a ton of room available to indie developers on PSN . Which although it has it's share of great hits. It is severely lacking in that department. It can give some of these smaller companies a chance to stand out like with flower.
JustTheBeginning
What is the zombie type game in the background? I love me zombies :)
teac77
the orange bar keeps going and going...
jamie543
i recommend indeigamesblog (search it) many updates a day showing trailers and such for indie games
Flight_Eagle
I recently went through XboxLIVE's Indie Games section and found a few good, fun titles. Bought them, or plan on doing so, to hopefully see more games from them. Me and a buddy sat down and played Wizard's Odyssey. Had a fun time.
I think i went through PSN, but I need more experience with it. Found Trine though, bought that. There's some pretty good stuff out there, and i wish they had a voice.
bigboi21
Is it really necessary for 10 different people to post that one video's broken? One complaint plus some thumbs up will do....lol.
Regarding to the Soapbox; I do think Indie games need to be publicized more, but you also have to take into account that most of the people who make these don't have the funds to do so. So ultimately i think the best solution would be to have more events like PAX East to draw out the Indie game publishers, or even an event to announce that, "Hey, these games are out there, easily accessible, and very fun to play."
horseflesh
Steam? But it's limited to games that Valve chooses for steam...I have definitely picked up a couple games because they're highlighted on steam and have a demo you can download.
bestclipfan
video timer is broken, says video is 44 seconds long and then the blue bar just keeps going. Also it won't let me fast forward.
