PlayStation 3

PlayStation 3 owners who are currently enjoying a different operating system than the one that shipped with their non-Slim models might want to prepare a few final words. Sony has announced that the next PS3 firmware update v3.21 will disable the console’s “Install Other OS” feature.

Sony's senior director of corporate communications and social media Patrick Seybold posted on the PlayStation Blog that the feature is being removed for security reasons, adding that it will “help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.”

Should you decide to shun the firmware update on principle, here’s a list of features that you will no longer have access to:

  • Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
  • Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
  • Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
  • Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

I don’t know anyone who uses the “Other OS” option on their fat PS3s, but there have to be a few people out there who use it, and I’m guessing they aren’t too pleased with this news. Anyone here particularly enraged? Or could you care less?

I honestly don't mind losing this as long as it means my PS3 is actually more secure as a result (which remains to be seen). I really believe that this has come about as a direct result of two things: the price drop making the PS3 more attractive to consumers and Sony adding trophies thus making gaming that much more competitive, because before that point there wasn't as much incentive to hack it. I do kind of feel sad to see it go, though, I thought it was a cool way to advertise that the PS3 isn't just a game system, that its a computer. Oh well, such is life, jerks will always find a way to make the people in power take away whatever luxuries we have been enjoying until that point.

Well,,, i dont use that option but removing it completely from the system will lower the ps3 power. In my opinion, that option shows how powerful the PS3 is... anyway, i hope they know what they are doing.

I am sure that there is a way around this.

Perhaps partitioning off the part of the hard-drive the other OS runs on and using the other partition to use psn.

I could be talking out of my ass though, I don't really know enough about the PS3's hardware architecture to know for sure, that is just how I would go about doing it on a PC.

The thing that suck is that I never use it, but I want it on there any way, It's like losing a part of history. Kind of like the kill screen being patched out of all the Donkey Kong arcade machines.

Sony is recognizing George Hotz's work in the PS3 hacking scene as a threat. Should this man care, the war is on.

But he has already faced something similar with Apple back in the day.

I have it installed on my 60gig but never use it, it doesn't bother me to lose it.
