PlayStation 3 owners who are currently enjoying a different operating system than the one that shipped with their non-Slim models might want to prepare a few final words. Sony has announced that the next PS3 firmware update v3.21 will disable the console’s “Install Other OS” feature.
Sony's senior director of corporate communications and social media Patrick Seybold posted on the PlayStation Blog that the feature is being removed for security reasons, adding that it will “help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.”
Should you decide to shun the firmware update on principle, here’s a list of features that you will no longer have access to:
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
I don’t know anyone who uses the “Other OS” option on their fat PS3s, but there have to be a few people out there who use it, and I’m guessing they aren’t too pleased with this news. Anyone here particularly enraged? Or could you care less?

Wow I really cannot believe all the stupid comments in some of the first 20 I can make money betting on the fact that most of you never owned a original ps3 ( Hello the $600 dollars price tag). This other OS or Operating System allows anyone to use a Linux OS which is freeware(short for free software) to have a viable way to slim down the amount of devices you need in your home. Back ten years, fifteen years ago I had a small TV with a, VCR player, a DVD player a computer, a hand held game console, a regular game console, a cassette player Walkman, a CD player Walkman, a watch, and a cell phone. Not mentioning all the different game titles that were exclusive to different systems which means you have to buy a certain system to play a certain game along with all the accessories needed to actually enjoy to the fullest extent. With a gaming console like the PS3 you don't need all of that at all, it can be your entry level personal computer (which tend to cost around 400 dollars), a CD, DVD player, that can store all of your music and video media on hard drive so there wont be a need for you pray you don't scratch your discs. A communication device through the PSN (PlayStation Network) or through Linux which allows for crystal clear video chats with others that i can sync my blue tooth headset that came free with my blackberry and used my old video camera for my computer and chat with my friends instead of using up my minutes, and wasting my time on twitter, facebook, and myspace. As well as being compatible with all large library of very cheap apple blue tooth device bot a wireless keyboard and mouse set for 9.99 USD online. So when someone gives me the opportunity to purchase a device that can simplify my life down to one neat black shiny box without the need for overly expensive accessories with there wires cluttering up my house and complicated instruction manuals giving me a headache I will try it out. Along with the fact that it will turn any room into a entertainment center of hell mary yes that was freaking awesome do that one again man is a win win for me especially if you are planning to have women over without them saying depressingly horrible comments behind your back( even losers who crap on everyone need someone to love them, thank god my mom's at little feminist and I'm in it with the ladies). And for those really immature fanboys out there I have four systems a gaming PC, a Xbox 360, a Nintendo Wii and a PS3 and I only play the exclusive titles for most of the games I have they are for the pc and the ps3 which I prefer because they allow me to still use a computer keyboard and mouse for most of the games I still like ( I love compatibility).

Doesn't bother me too much. I won't ever use the PS3 I play games on for any purpose other than playing games (out of fear that I'd screw it up and lose all my stuff!!!). I'm working on a PS3 cluster for my masters thesis though, and that kinda requires that I can install whatever I want on it, but I don't need firmware updates on those anyways. As long as they continue to work without it, I don't really care.

I know many of you didn't use the other OS function, and i rarely used it either until my PC died. I was extremely thankful for having a machine that could check e-mail. I also used Yellow Dog to run some emulators. Do you know how nice it is to switch over from ps3 to Nintendo and Super Nintendo, (I only played games I used to own, would have felt guilty otherwise.) I really did have a machine that did everything. That's what I expected when I shelled out the 600 dollars for it.
I am so disappointed in Sony's behavior over this. Though not highly touted at release, this was still an advertised selling point. Sony has shown very little support of this function from the start, by limiting the other OS to 10GB regardless of HDD size. Now its entire removal.
SONY has epically failed. The few people out there with this function are the core gamers that supported the PS3 from the start by buying at a the highest selling point. And now we get our features taken away? SONY has an obligation to either reimburse us for false advertising or FIX THE DAMN PROBLEM!!! The cost for reimbursement: initial price (599)-current price(299)=300 per person x thousands of people. This could be millions of dollars and (some) still angry consumers. Alternatively, Pay 10-15 IT guys 100k to 150k each, still spend millions, but gain consumer satisfaction and increased reliability in your system's overall security.
HMMM, Tough call Sony. DO THE RIGHT THING and stand by the people that initially stood by you at launch and through those first troubling years.

Since they're taking out the option to install another OS, I hope they put back BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY on the newer models.
Still clinging on to the hope of having B|C be put back in the PS3's & (added to the) PS3 Slim's.
Or even only on the (new batches of) PS3 Slims.
Come on, Sony! I'm pretty sure you'll rake in more PS3+PS3 Slim sales by doing so!
I know I'LL be one of those people, to buy a PS3 Slim with B|C added into it!

What! no more YDL! This is an outrage. ohhh well my pc is way faster than my fat ps3 on YDL plus what is there to do without 3d enabled graphics =( i do feel bad for the Linux community though but weren't the YDL updates and support canceled a while back?

I use it, but the even the threat of an xbox360 epidemic coming to the PS3 scares me a little. I don't mind piracy when its for the good of the community, but when people use it to gain an unfair advantage over others (i.e. Halo 3 mulitplayer) it just pisses me off.
I mean if some people need to cheat in order to claim that they are the best player at a certain game, to me that is just cowardly. If Sony is doing this so we can keep this kind of people away from us, the I'm all for it, while I will miss my Linux on my PS3 its not that big of a deal for me.
Besides I have a Mac and a PC that i could run Linux on if i wanted to.

Wait wait wait, am I reading this right? They're actually saying if I choose not to update, my privilege to use PSN, play Bluray and PS3 titles, will be taken away, when I haven't done anything to lose the privilege?
I paid a good $500 for an old 80GB that's as noisy as hell, at least let me enjoy what came with the package.

This is simply a panic move in regards to Geohot cracking the Ps3 and an attempt to prevent modding and piracy. Now I don't endorse piracy if the game is good I will buy it (on the other hand if it's just a medicore game or something I'm on the fence about well...). My concern is the modding I like being able to personalize my devices (Iphone I'm talking to you I love my winterboard and custom themes).
With modding the community gets a chance to be creative and add new features. If anything sony should embrace that see what features the users are demanding. But as usual the consumer is not allowed to do what they want with the products they buy. My original xbox is fully modded and I still use it because of the emulated games I have on it.

The problem with this move is that it's a slippery slope, not to mention horribly lazy on Sony's part to not just fix the problem.. Sony *remotely disabling* functionality for any reason is a horrible precedent for technology. Sure, probably not many people use the Other OS functionality, but what if tomorrow the PS2 emulation on older systems had a security hole? Would Sony just say "Oh, by the way, we're turning off PS2 compatibility tomorrow!"
Sony has been stripping features out of the PS3 since the start, but until now, thankfully none of those were retroactive-- my 60GB PS3 still plays SACDs, still has 4 functional USB ports, etc. But now it won't do something that it used to do. This is unacceptable.
And by the way, for people saying "if it makes my system more secure.." -- this has nothing to do with YOUR security, and has everything to do with Sony's corporate paranoia that someone, somewhere, might possibly be doing something they don't approve of-- so they'll do something worse. (read up on their audio CD rootkits for a little tidbit on how they work)

I'm mixed on this. I'm completely against losing features on my PS3 should I ever have a need to use them. I paid the launch price so what right do they have to take things back without a refund? I say Sony is making a few too many mistakes this gen and that's why Wii is winning.
On the other hand my only plans for the PS3 is as a game system. I haven't used the OS option and while they're at it I'd gladly throw away the video, music and BR playback options too. They don't belong on a game console either. I would rather keep the OS option and I will NOT give up my BC. If they take that away there will be hell to pay.

Oh and isn't the army using like 3000 PS3's for some super computer experiment, because the ps3's that had the ability to install other OS where cheap for the amount of computing power available for them.

I never go around to install an other OS on my PS3, but it does have me a little ticked that they would do this. I did have intentions of one day using the feature and being that I payed $600 for my PS3 back in 2006 I think I deserve to keep all the features the system originally came with. Oh well, it isn't that big of a deal but, that doesn't mean its not something to be displeased with.
