Earlier this week, South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson, a staunch opponent of violent video games and key obstructionist to Australia’s adoption of an R18+ rating for video games, resigned. While proponents of an adult rating for games were understandably pleased with this news, it raised an important question: Will Atkinson’s replacement support the new mature rating?
Well, according to reports, the new South Australian Attorney-General, MP John Rau, does in fact support an R18+ rating for games. Rau spoke with Gamers4Croydon, a political party that has been instrumental in bringing the mature game rating issue to national prominence, and indicated that “a lack of an R18+ for games seemed absurd, and that it was really just common sense to introduce it, considering the vast majority of adult content is already available under the MA15+ classification,” News.com.au reports.
The long overdue R18+ rating will be up for consideration in late April, which could mean the all too common “Australia Bans X Game” headline could soon be a thing of the past.
Thanks for the tip Manne!

Yay Australia.

while I am happy they get to play good games now, I will miss the outrage I enjoyed over the controversy.
I mean what would happen to fanboys if their hated other console dissapeared? Would they have anything to live for? What would Lyric do?

What's the point' of having a adult rating if there's like not a single adult rated game. I was so pissed when I found out manhunt 2 was being censored so that it could actually be sold.

Long past due. Anyway before people think they're seeing the light this is mainly about money. (In a good way) The reality is that the games media is or already has surpassed movies in terms of revenue. Since the younger and spend thrift demographic would rather spend their money on games then the Aussies would be smart to give them more options so they can tax those games. I also think that Broadband service providers are trying to get this through since it's almost become a necessity this generation.
