Just Cause 2, as Jake Gaskill pointed out in his review this week, is a pretty great game. The reason Just Cause 2 works is because Avalanche Studios has crafted an impressive open world that, more impressively, has loads of cool toys to play and experiment with. The story is dead awful. In fact, it's so terrible that I'm considering committing a video game sin that I've never been tempted by before: skipping the cut-scenes and moving right into gameplay. There's no reason to pay attention to what's happening in-between missions because the story of Just Cause 2 is your gameplay decisions. If that's the case, I'm having trouble coming up with reasons to sit through the terrible dialogue.
So, maybe I won't. When's the last time you said "screw it" to a game's story?

The cut scenes are very campy, if you look at them as unintentional comedy they are actually pretty fun/funny. You could even bring friends over to mst3k it to make it better. Still, the story fell on its face right at the beginning. Spies flying in being all obvious and getting caught right at the start of their mission? Great work guys. Anyone else think the bit with the gadget guy dying was pretty stupid? And why would they leave sensitive information unsecured in an open chopper? These are supposed to be experienced spies, c'mon. You have to think of it as a comedy to get through the cut scenes. I'm actually enjoying it though, I love unintentional comedy. I mean, it's not like they are as bad as Resident Evil one cut scenes. Bet'cha wish THOSE were cut scenes on the editing room floor. Comically bad, now those were funny.

FFXIII has gotten me close to skipping. I'm 25 hours in and I still don't give 2 craps about the story line. The incoherent mess that it is just makes me puke every time another several minute cut scene starts. Would it have killed Square-Enix to star the game with a prologue or something to explain what the heck everything is and what's happening??

i never skipped a cut scene but i would just like to bring up final fantasy 13 i love how it will ask you if you want to save, play a huge as cut scene, then ask you if you want to save again. because so much was accomplished?

HAHAHA, I WIN. I skipped the cut scene in the GTA4 DLC, where some guys naked n you see all his junk... skipped that one.
It sucks that the first nudity in GTA was a dudes junk!

Never, until I played the demo for this.

If I have seen it before or if the cutscene is just plain awful then I will skip. I first got introduced to cutscenes with Red Alert 2 so the damn things do hold a special place in my heart even though they can be annoying sometimes if you can't skip them.

Two words: Borderlands. I didn't skip the few cut scenes present, but the story elements told through quest text boxes and over the radio thing were heavily ignored. Paid attention to the claptraps because they were entertaining... story, not so much.

ya the cutscenes in the first JC were pretty rubbish. nothing changed here. in a way its even worse, because they are trying harder to be serious. well ive only played the demo, but the voices sound different. but you cant even skip the demo cutscenes! drives me nuts. "im blah blah san-toe-zii"

Do try my best to not avoid cut scenes but there are those games where you honestly don't care. If Kingdom Hearts had let me, I'd have skipped a few of the cut scenes that were rather useless and added nothing other than as an arrow to your next destination. A lot, if not all, FPS games are scene skipped a good 7/10 times as well. They are usually pointless and just act as either briefing or debriefing which most games give objectives and goals in game anyway so... yeah.
Short: I've committed that horrible sin but, in truth, it is avoided if possible or not annoying.

Bayonetta. Awesome action game marred by terrible voice acting, a script full of cheese, and a non-sensical horrid plot to the power of 10.

@ Patrick
Didn't you skip all the cut scenes in Red Faction?
Does Street Fighter 4 count? If not then Gears, RE5, BlazBlue, and MW2.

Metal Gear Solid! I always skip the cut scenes because I don't get the story at all. I just want to shove dead guys in lockers, tap on stuff to alert guards and take them down from behind, throw an extra clip, put down a dirty magazine so that it will distract the guards and so on. Screw the story, it's not something I get.

I don't really skip cut scenes, except maybe if I keep dying in a part of a game right after the cut scene that I've already seen.
sandboxgamer
It dosent matter how bad the cut scene is or if you dont like you have to watch it dont break the code man dont do it lol
JDarkley
This might be a bit obvious, but when ever I replay MGS 2, I skip most of the codex scenes. If I'm playing MGS 1 or 3, though, I don't mind as much.

I don't remember ever skipping cut-scenes unless it was a second play through and so one in which I have already seen the cut-scenes. I just tried the Just Cause 2 demo and could tell that when I pick this up, I'm not watching those cut-scenes. The accents are horrendous but the game-play is a lot of fun. Nothing like Hijacking a helicopter in air then dangling out from under the unmanned helicopter before grappling over to another. a lot of fun.
