Guys, the screens on the Nintendo DSi XL are absolutely gorgeous. You might think you understand how big those screens are, but the full impact of the DSi XL doesn't happen until you've got the machine in your hands. I skipped on buying a DSi, despite a great desire to check out the DSiWare store, because it felt unnecessary. When the DSi XL was announced, my patience seemed to have been rewarded. Here was this bigger, better machine for just a little more cash out of my pocket.
Then, just a few days before the DSi XL arrives in stores, Nintendo has to go and announce the 3DS. Sure, it's not coming out until sometime early next year (at least in Japan -- who knows about the US), but it seems to make a DSi XL purchase a moot point now.
Did the 3DS have the same effect on you?

I'll be replacing my DS Lite with a DSiXL ... when it's price drops to $99 or less, which is what will happen when the 3DS gets released.

Although the 3DS is a new platform, the fact that it will play older DS games will give pause to those of us that already have and older model and are not wiping our asses with Ben Franklin. I had planned to buy an XL (I've got a fattie from launch), and now I'm worried about being pissed about all the cool crap that'll be on the 3DS while I'm trapped in the 2nd dimension.

The Nintendo 3DS will be like every other hardware Nintendo puts out:
> Same games you played 20 years ago
> 1986 graphics
> Will sell 100 million units
WHY ARE PEOPLE STILL BUYING NINTENDO PRODUCTS!!?

I hope everyone understands that the DSI XL is just a bigger version of the DSI, its not by anymeans a new gaming platform. Nintendo is trying to reach a new form of gamer, research has shown that there are people well over the age of thirty getting into gaming. Nintendo has always been the family gaming brand name while other companies have focused on more adult games, this bigger DSI form will allow people of all ages (AKA the blue hairs) to join in on a game (with there kids or grandkids) without giving them a pounding headace from squinting, so dont be to offended by the DSI XL even if is only cool until the release of the 3DS. My hats off to Nintendo for thinking of people like me, as far as the 3DS goes, of course i will trade my new DSI XL in on one as long as the screens stay big.

I had the DS fat and sold that one on ebay during Christmas to get a bit more out of my purchase of the DS Lite. Then they come out with the DSi and I say nah I'm good. Same thing with the XL and now with the 3DS I might be able to rinse and repeat my bull/sell old one on ebay again. Maybe though, really depends on the features with 3DS, analog stick might be the biggest indicator.

YES!
i skipped out on the DSi, because it seemed like not enough of an upgrade to justify selling my DS lite, but when the DSi XL was announced, the very same day i resolved to get it. The screens just look amazing! I almost never play it anywhere but at home either, so i didn't mind the added bulk.
i honestly just preordered one about a week ago and then when i caught wind of this i was like 'FFFFFFFUUUUU!!!!!"
why must they keep upgrading an already near-perfect system? it's sold the most units out of this whole generation.
do they even realize how much of a slap in the face this is to their most loyal sheep?

I was planning on getting a DSi XL. Now I think I'll wait for the 3DSi XL, which will most likely be announced after the 3DS comes out.

Perhaps Nintendo announced it right before the official DSi XL release to allow people to decide... Can you imagine the uproar if they had waited until E3 to leak this info - right after many had finally given in and upgraded from the fat or lite to the DSi XL.
I view this as a clear indicator that the DSi XL was not intended to be an upgrade path for current owners, but rather targeted at a new audience - or at least to newcomers. To the hardcore audience or those that already have a DS, this is the "yea you might not want the DSi XL, but look at what we have coming for you."
I don't play on portable systems, but I will still be buying a DSi XL on launch day for my 7yo daughter. She saved up enough for the DS lite, and I am chipping in the difference so that she (and her siblings) can enjoy a bigger screen. For younger kids I think portability is important but not pocketability.
I hope the reveal of the 3DS at E3 is as interesting as the speculation is. I'm thinking the 3DS will be the big holiday gift for 2011 in the US - so practically 2 years away. With that in mind the DSi XL really does seem to be for new owners.

I was dumb enough to waist money on the DSi, I will get the 3DS once it is proven that it wont make you blind lol

DSi XL is essentially the GBA micro, a cosmetic update on an existing piece of hardware. The 3DS is something new, and it won't be out for another year or so. I don't see why everyone is so up in arms over this.

@RockieOllie
How is this NOT another variation of the DS? Just because its going to be 3D? When Apple made the IPhone 3G, and then the IPhone 3GS, was the 3GS not another IPhone? I don't understand where that logic lies, but its another DS. Hands down.
Tim_1138
Simple answer, yes.
Meatball_Mamba
Having stuck with my launch DS all this time I was feeling pretty tempted by the DSi XL, but, indeed, all of that has basically gone out the window with the news of the 3DS. I can hang onto ol' faithful a bit longer.
RockieOllie
I still have the original old DS, i was going to buy a DSi XL for the new Pokemon Soul Silver, but when i heard reports of the successor to the DS, i held off from buying a DSi.
I don't know how to get this through to all of you: THIS ISN"T ANOTHER VARIATION OF THE DS...maybe its the name that is causing people to believe that.

In order to see why Nintendo does so well financially, you have to look at Nintendo for the company that it claims to be: a toy manufacturer. Unlike Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo is much more open to trying new things that will be fun and exciting, regardless if it seems odd for video games. Because of its philosophy of being more in the toy business than in the more strict video game business, it has found success with technologies that had once been feared as being "gimmicky." I think Microsoft (and Sony to some extent) has learned that it needs to invest in new ways of entertaining consumers; and its starting to stray away from the typical structure that video games have been thought of(hand operated controller and television). Project Natal SHOULD BE A BIG REASON TO BE EXCITED IN MICROSOFT'S FUTURE EARNINGS POTENTIAL. It shows a radical departure from typical video game activities. Also, it seems like it will be easy to operate, which I believe is a required quality for a product to be successful in the market (look how easy the Wii is to operate).

I have the fat and the zelda's collector edition ds, I was going to replace the fat with the xl but until there is more information on the 3ds, I would go with the xl for now, I just need the money though

Is this 3DS just an upgrade like DSi and XL or is it supposed to be the next DS. (NES,SNES,N64 etc.)
I don't have a DS and I was planning on getting the XL, but this announcement is making me question if I it'll be worth it.
Ziraider
I say go with the 3d but making the xl, kinda lame just a lager screen? who cares i mean maybe for 3d but no need to make xl then 3d just do one.
