Final Fantasy XIII Becomes Fastest Selling Entry In Franchise History

Final Fantasy XIII, the latest epic entry in Square Enix’s mega successful Final Fantasy franchise, has officially become the fastest selling installment in the series’ history.

According to Square Enix, the game surpassed the 1 million units sold mark in its first five day of sale in North America, and since its release, it has shipped (not sold) over 5 million copies. Square didn't provide console-specific sales figures. To date, the Final Fantasy franchise has sold 96 million units worldwide. Is that all?

How many Final Fantasy games have you bought?

It's no surprise to me that FFXIII has become the fastest selling entry. I mean, we've been waiting for what seems like forever lol. Aside from that, I've owned the following FF titles:

    Final Fantasy Legends II (Gameboy)
    Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
    Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
    Final Fantasy VIII (PS1)
    Final Fantasy Chronicles (PS1)
    Final Fantasy IX (PS1)
    Final Fantasy X (PS2)
    Final Fantasy X-2 (PS2)
    Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)

I'm a fan of final fantasy so i've bought most of the series and i've played all of them except 5. I'm loving 13 right now, but I gotta say that it's not exactly what i thought it would be. I like the linear gameplay so far and the battle system is a lot of fun. However, i get the feeling that the story is a bit... how do i put this? heavy? the characters all feel weighted down by this. I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing but i had the choice to play either awakening or ff13 this weekend and i chose awakening. hell, i think i'll play it right now!

I'm not not sure why people are treating this game with such acclaim. In much the same boat as Stephen Johnson, I feel like all I'm doing is going through the game on autopilot even after reaching the first "open exploration section," or as much exploration 13 can provide, and milling about for several hours. Sure, you can select attacks yourself and the computer doesn't always pick the best option, but if each result in that same 5-star gold sticker telling you "great job kiddo," why put forth any effort. Not to mention the ninety other small things the annoy the hell out of me which act in counter to past entries in the series. While I'm all for Square's attempts to "reinvent" the series with each new iteration, I'll put it this way- it feels like we've been given a juicy RPG T-bone for several wonderful years only now to be tossed a basic rawhide chewie. Sure, it might taste sorta meaty, but there's just not much there.

The first Final Fantasy game I ever played was FFIX, it was stunning and I became a #1 fan of the franchise immediately. Then I bought FFVIII but it was not too great... then I bought FFVII and that's it.... I was converted in a super duper mad-crazy #1 super fan of the series, I bought a PSP only to play FFVII: Crisis Core, and I also bought FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus (a little weird) and the 'blu-ray' FFVII: Advent Children movie (then Advent Children COMPLETE). Finally I moved to PS2 with FFX, FFX-2 (not so good ) and FFXII... I never played FFXI but I have it anyways... I am just waiting for the next installment FFXIV to play online also! NOW I am playing FFXIII and I can say.... THIS IS EPIC, MAYBE THE BEST OF ALL THE SERIES! I love everything, all is perfect! (principally Hope).

PSN ID: kennyamr - ADD ME!, super fan of Final Fantasy XIII and the FF Series.

You can do that and try FFVII first, anyway, this is an awesome game! you are gonna love it, the story is perfect! and if you want to be a FF fan, you MUST play this number! I bet you are going to play 'FFVII: Crisis Core' for PSP and watch the movie 'FFVII: Advent Children' after playing the FFVII game, it's a great universe of fantasy, really you are gonna love it!
FFXIII is a 10 out of 10 game also, although some people criticize the linear style of the game I believe this is one of the best in the series. the cut-scenes are gorgeous and the characters are super detailed, and cute, amazing story also, my favorite 'hero' is Hope by the way... FFXIII is a MUST to play for this year!!!!!!!!
Do what you think is better, if you can't wait to play it, just play FFXIII, but if not, try FFVII first and then play FFXIII.
This is a franchise you are gonna love, I promise!
My PSN ID: kennyamr - ADD ME, Final Fantasy XIII SUPER fan!

    4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and now 13

I have to say out of all of these I have played 13 has to be the worst closely followed by 8. I'm through with the FF franchise. I grew up on this title and it just seems to get worst with every release. I was hoping this would be the FF that was needed to reboot the dying JRPG empire. It pretty much sealed the coffin in my opinion.

Not to say it's a bad game if pressing "X" for 30+ hours long with cutscenes thrown in every hour is your thing. It's not the same Final Fantasy that managed to captivate my imagination as a kid, and maybe that is my problem as a kid I was less forgiving. Now as an adult I would much rather have a more rewarding experience with games like Fallout and Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

I played 10 and 13. I'd like to see the sales details though. I'm sure releasing the game for the 360 helped those numbers.

I've never played any FF games ( I know I'm terrible ). I'm thinking about downloading FFVII for my PS3, should I do this or just buy this? I know they're two really different games but I want to get a feel for FF before i play FFXIII.

I have (bought) VII-XIII. I went to the midnight release for XIII, and I don't regret it one bit. This game is awesome.

It's been ok so far. I am still waiting for the moment where the game sucks me in and I can't put the controller down. Until then I'll continue to take breaks every few save points to see what's on TV.

You know why I never beat FF12? it's release date was too damn close to the PS3. I never could bring myself to go back and play a PS2 game. I have my collection right under my PS3 collection, but i haven't touched any of them in well.. about 3 years... I never got around to beating Dragon Quest VIII either.. 2 great games that went to waste of you ask me.
