Peter Molyneux Worried About Fable III Opening Section

Gamers have become accustomed to games throw them into the action straight away with little or no time to become accustomed to the world they’ll inhabit for the course of the game. It’s understandable then that Lionhead Studios’ head Peter Molyneux is a bit concerned about the opening section of his team’s anticipated Fable III.

Molyneux shared his worry via Twitter today, saying, “Been playing the opening of Fable 3, I am slightly worried that there is no combat for the first 30 mins. Is this too long, thoughts.” Molyneux later went on to say that, “There is no combat because it is so dramatic, and that drama has little room full combat.”

This explanation makes total sense, especially when you consider that a good portion of Fable III's opening section will be used to introduce players to the game’s new “touch” mechanic (and perhaps even a Natal feature or two?). Regardless though, 30 minutes is nothing, and anyone who gets genuinely frustrated by not being able to stab something for half-an-hour at the beginning of the game probably shouldn’t be playing it in the first place.

The opening section of the original Half-Life remains one of my top five favorite gaming moments of all time, and the highlight was exploding a fellow scientists lunch in a microwave and putting on my work clothes (aka HEV suit). I’m all for games taking their time and establishing mood and atmosphere before putting a weapon in your hand, and I wish more games did it.

What do you think?

I think everyone s waiting for Fable 3 to come out, 30 minute intros are nothing to a true gamer, Fable was destined to be a Hall of fame game as soon as they sold that first copy. Lets just hope for more choices in the oveall gameplay, and maybe a few more cool weapons for all the slashing there worried about.

The beginnings of Fable and Fable 2 were pretty combat-less since you were a child, and that took about 15mins to get through so what's another 15?
Besides, not everything needs combat to be exciting. There is more to videogames than combat.
    Relax Peter Molyneux.

I can handle 30 minutes of non combative action, in fact im used to it and besides a movie that is perceived as an action movie should only have that problem, not a video game that will (most likely ) be played over and over again, (re) aquaintence is the key to a stories success anyone that has ever played a Grand Theft Auto game will know that if you just simply skip the cut scenes you lose the whole story practically and have no idea what's going on except go kill this guy, go to this spot, follow that man before he gets away WTF.

Peter Molyneux has nothing to worry about. A game without combat for the first 30 minutes is not bad.

People who thinks Molyneux is criticizing the game, should read the 2nd part where he said "There is no combat because it is so dramatic" Sound to me like he's hyping the game. Not that there's anything wrong with that, he is Peter Molyneux.

Peter normally knows what hes saying not including what happened with fable 1, but at least he expresses concern over his game as opposed to most game makers now a days

Looks like "Operation: Get the fans pissed off" is under way! But seriously, 30 mins without combat is nothing, since I'm used to RPGs that goes on for hours. As long as Fable III make improvements from Fable II like longer main quest and better end boss/ending. For an RPG, Fable II was quite quick to finish.

well honestly fable one and fable 2 really had no difference outside of the way you fight. i was basically fable 1.5. hopefully this one will be so different that it bears no resemblance to the previous but i doubt it will. and if i have to spend $250 on natal just to get the full experience out of this game they can have it. i don't see myself paying that much money to play a 30 to 60hr game.

Umm...haven't the other two Fable games been like that? first one was like 15 minutes, and 2nd was like 20...no big deal, we're used to it. Chill out, Peter.

I Don't think he should be worried, Its more of the build and how the game plays and how the story works out. i don't need combat right away, if i neede to fill that hunger then i got Dante Inferno, God of war III and bayonetta

I am wondering. I havent seen anything specifically stating one way or the other but has he, or any of lionhead studios for that matter, mentioned anything about making the game any longer? It has been a consistent opportunity mentioned since the first game and if the first 30 minutes is spent without combat, thats fine but it could be disappointing if the game is substantially short. I really enjoy the Fable franchise but I think these games would have limitless potential if they added a bit more content.

I really wish Molyneux would just shut up and make is game. No one in the history of videogames overhypes themselves as much as he does.

I really don't care what Fable 3 does at this point. Fable 2 was probably one of my biggest disappointments. I loved Fable, but not for the Sims element that was apart of the game. I loved it because it was a fantasy RPG with simple good gameplay and a story plot that wasn't too over the top, I also loved that being evil or being good actually was apparent with the towns I visited and that I could take quests according to what I wanted my character to be. I'm not saying the game was perfect though, it was short, very short, the character customization was lacking and I was quite upset that I couldn't marry Briar Rose (what gives Lionhead, thousands of women in the game and the one I actually want I can't have). Anyways after I had beat Fable and opened all the Demon Doors I stopped playing, I really didn't care about my characters Sim life or Sim family or the fact that I not only had the money to buy every building in the game but the power to kill everyone who refused to sell me there land The Sim aspect of the game was fun during the story because it gave me something to do when I wanted to take a small break from doing the story but after all was said and done I just didn't care.

I could give a full out rant on why I hated Fable 2 but I'll save it for another day. What I'm trying to get across is that what I wanted to see a major improvement on from Fable in Fable 2 was the actual game/story elements and not the Sim element. It became quite clear at the beginning of 2 that I wasn't going to have any of that and from what I'm hearing about 3 I should expect the same.

Molyneux keeps trying to express this point of having power and using it and I think he doesn't understand that it's never been about using your power in games but the trials and tribulations you have to go through to obtain that power. For example, Zelda games, sure you can get everything in the game before you beat it but once you do you don't just sit there running around killing monsters just to prove a point, you go and take on the evil force in the game, in this case Ganon. Nobody cares what happens after you defeat Ganon because that's not what the game is about, the game is about going through hell to obtain the strength power and wisdom needed to overcome the evil force plaguing the world. No one wants to hear the story of "Link: The Retired Hero of Time" they want to hear the story of how he came to be.

I don't really care if there's no combat, just as long as it's not a 30 minute cutscene. I'm look forward to the touch mechanic, because it was a little disappointing to not be able to hug my wife or kids in Fable II. I also wonder if there will be an "abuse" button for the evil people. That would result in a lot of anti-videogame news reports.

Once again, I like what Molyneux has to say about his games.....and once again, I am sure that the game itself will be an utter abomination.

I don't care what you say Peter, your games suck. You should worry instead about your crappy story, game mechanics and utter lack of anything resembeling a challenge, qualities that you perfected in fable 2.
