Why PlayStation Move Being Wii HD Wouldn't Necessarily Be A Bad Thing

My initial response to Sony's press conference during the Game Developers Conference that revealed the first details on their motion controller, PlayStation Move, was simple: "oh, so it's Wii HD."

I can understand why, on its face, that might come across as an insult. There's an insinuation that Sony simply lifted what Nintendo's already pioneered with the Wii and brought it to a high-definition format. Sony would most likely dispute that assessment (see: EyeToy), but Sony's intentions mean less than what we're actually being presented with and to my eyes, that looks like a Wii HD.

Here's the thing, though. I think that's potentially a really good thing for developers, publishers and gamers. Sony has an opportunity to capture a market that Nintendo's failed miserably at, a market that many are convinced exists, yet Wii developers have consistently been unable to capitalize on:

Hardcore gamers.

Why PlayStation Move Being Wii HD Wouldn't Necessarily Be A Bad Thing I know. On Feedback, I've maligned Sony's current pitch for Move and hardcore gamers. Bringing out SOCOM 4 with grafted motion controls was a bad move I'm hopeful Sony can make up for in the coming months. We went through several years of painful motion growing pains on the Wii and Sony has only opened the floodgates to developers being able to "embrace" motion by slapping bare-bones interfaces onto their shooters.

How many times have we, as gamers, demanded there be more "hardcore" games on Wii? And how many times have excellent "hardcore" games been released on the Wii -- I'm looking at Capcom's Zach & Wiki, Sega's MadWorld, Konami's Silent Hill: Shattered Memories -- and then no one buys them? The people that do give these games a chance tend to enjoy them, but it doesn't translate into sales. The message that's being sent to publishers? "Please, stop making these games!" Based on what I've seen, that message seems to be sticking.

The takeaway, however, might be "don't make these games...for Wii." It's been an impossible question to answer whether failed hardcore-targeted games on the Wii would have been a success had they been released on a platform, ala Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, where that audience tends to embrace them more emphatically and migrate from game-to-game on a more regular basis. There's a reason the same handful of games are on the sales charts for Wii every month: those are the games that people tend to buy and still play on their Wii. That's not a problem we see as often on the other machines.

But just as Nintendo faces a perception problem with the Wii that's seemingly preventing them from allowing their third-parties to have commercial success with adult-oriented products on a platform with the largest userbase worldwide, Sony faces the opposite, but very daunting, problem. Move will have a consumer base used to rabid consumption of hardcore games but Sony needs to actually get Move into their hands. In general, peripherals are a hard sell. Move might be marketed as a PlayStation revolution, but unless Sony's willing to send free Moves to everyone who's purchased a PlayStation 3, the only way to guarantee Move's a universal success in terms of adoption, it's an accessory, an add-on -- something optional Sony needs to convince everyone "hey, you need this, too."

Why PlayStation Move Being Wii HD Wouldn't Necessarily Be A Bad Thing

Being essentially Wii HD also means developers and publishers have another outlet for their projects. You don't have to rely on the notoriously picky and unpredictable Wii consumer to purchase your new motion-driven IP -- you also have the option of appealing to Move owners with different expectations.

The flip side is whether Move should be targeting hardcore gamers at all. Wii wasn't a success because the hardcore flocked; it was a success because of a different audience. That, however, is a wildly different argument, one that needs time to simmer and for Sony to show more of its hand.

Nintendo doesn't seem interested in Wii HD. Microsoft is ditching the controller entirely. I don't see any reason why Sony shouldn't be allowed to step in and give something we all said we wanted. Whether or not that ends up being a success is something we'll see start to unfold this fall. It'll be a wild ride.

Here's hoping the following games have a better chance on the PS3 with PSMove
(on the off chance they get ported over or remade/remastered):

    + No More Heroes [1 & 2]
    + Dead Space: Extraction
    + The Conduit (& it's coming sequel - "Conduit 2")
    + House of the Dead [Overkill, 2, & 3]

& Other games I may have missed, with near the same amount of potential as the above listed.

To be honest, it seems that Natal is better marketed to the demographic that motion control appeals to and actually is a better input for that market cause they don't like buttons. Think, you could have Natal Fit and all that stuff without requiring users to even understand the menus (just say "play") or buying a board. The only problem is the casual market is reaching saturation and I'm not sure how many will buy a new, more expensive console just for a marginally better experience.

I think that if a motion controller is gonna work for hardcore gamers its gonna be on the PS3. since the launch of the Wii a large majority of the games have been to target age groups where they would be less likely to enjoy more violent games. walk into your local game store and look at the wii games. damn near all of them are directed for younger audiences. but since the ps3 launched their games have attracted hardcore gamers. games like MW2, God of War, Metal Gear 4. hardcore gamers are naturally attracted to these games more so they chose to buy this console. the wii never had to appeal to hardcore gamers because not many wii players are hardcore gamers
so the chances of the PS3 appealing to hardcore gamers is already higher than the wii because they have more hardcore gamers to begin with.

the problem they face is appealing to the hardcore gamer. the only way, i can see, to get the move into the hands of hardcore gamers is to create a game that focuses on the use of the controller. not just a point and shoot game but one that requires more interactive gameplay. like many people have said Heavy Rain and Tiger woods would be great on the move because it would be more interactive.

also @azumakinaruto666 i dont think the wii will get shut out by the playstation move. there are a lot of games on the wii that are exclusive to the wii. and those games have legions of fans that will buy the console just to play those games.

I was hoping that Sony would make a good motion console, but when I see the PS Move I see PlayStations Wii. Even if the PS Move makes "Hardcore" games I don t see what would really stopping the Wii from doing the same. The PS Move might be the Kick in the butt that the Wii needs to become an even better system.

The problem with the Wii was that the hardcore games that were fun, looked like crap due to the Wii's weak power. Sony has the PS3 however and could easily turn motion based games into the biggest thing since, well, gaming. The PS3 is the most powerful system on the market next to a custom PC and if Sony can get games that:
    1. Gloss and shine PS3 exclusives always are
    2. Have in-depth stories
    3. Run smoothly with the motion controls
Then they will easily pull ahead of MS and Nintendo. Sony's only real fear could be either game makers don't want to go through the trouble of overly complicated movement in some games or that Move isnt responsive enough for players to enjoy. I remember Eye Toy having some sensor problems back on PS2.

To me, this just seems like a desperate move by Sony to gain back lost profits. They saw how the Wii was doing so well and maybe they thought they could incorporate the motion control to the PS3. Perhaps try to steal some of Nintendo fans by making their own version of Wii but in HD?

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. These are the same companies who three short years ago said that motion sensing was not going to pick up & that it was all gimmick. I have three questions:

Question # 1: Why the sudden change of heart?
Question # 2: Why does Sony have to be that shameless? - Wii Mote & Ps move look almost the same.
At least Microsoft had the innovation to change the overall look of their motion sensing feature.
Question # 3: Why is Nintendo remaining so silent about all this? - Then again, I suppose it's as the saying goes - "Imitation is the best form of flattery" right?

Only one thing can be deduced from this: Casual gaming has gone from being "gimmicky" to "Lets face it, it's the only way we can possibly boost our sales enough to even stand a chance against those bloody Japs".

i think noone can say it better than the gamer on the platform that supports it. move has alot to overcome because of the backlash that we as hardcore gamers (most notably the sony gamer who is the most hypocritical to motion controls.) we spent more time definding ourselves and sony then we have playing our games. we are being hit hard by microsoft gamers witch has made us not second guse but support our platform of choice even more as we are unwavering. we have 34m ps3 owners (witch is a 4m units diff on 360) but yet we still sell less sofware most notably fore our exclusives. we are ready for move butthe burden is on sony to prove they can doit different, better and just as good as nintendo. they're going to haft to show us they can do wht nintendo has done with first party but not with third. the biggest burden is on third party. cause if they fail. then motion controlles will be a thing of the past and somting new in the 8 th gen. but if they succeed we as sony gamers haft to support move like never before (or like we defend the ps3). in closing. we will look to Adam Sessler and Morgan Web to reveiw the controls and games with a harsh vigilance that would scare third party pub's to either get it right or stay away.

Sony could really pull the Move off if they make exclusive games, and make them damn good. I know it's been said, but Heavy Rain with the Move would be phenomenal.

Reasons I think the "hardcore" games failed on the wii is there was no marketing push for these games. They may have generated internet buzz, but there were no commercials or anything of that kind, which get everyone talking, not just people who read tech and game websites. This is where Sony can step in and improve. Sony is actually willing to support their third party developers through advertising and promotions, unlike Nintendo. Nintendo ads consist of Mom's and celebrities playing first party games, and we're supposed to be impressed.

Lastly, Sony has multiplayer. It's not as nice as live, but every user can have an online account, and it's less vulgar than live. When you are trying to make a more family push, that is definitely important. Move users can access all the features of PSN, but may also see friends playing other games such as Uncharted 2 or Killzone 2, and that can influence them. "Why is my friends list filled with 'game X'?" they might ask. As much as I dislike it, MW2 was and is one of those games that everyone plays.

Overall, this is just a really long way of saying Sony has a better online platform and third party support, which can push the Move to be better than the Wiimote. The Move may not be anything innovative, but the software behind it may be.

the way i see it the motion controller market is a fad. with the wii only pushing games for a casual demographic that will only buy the system for 1 game will be their undoing. sony can capitolize here as long as they can make the hardcore gamer happy.

I've thought the Socom argument made by the G4 staff is sort of missing the point. They aren't trying to attract current players of the game by adding motion controls. They are trying to make the game more accessible to a larger base of people. And they were trying to demonstrate to the developers that Move is just another controller and is easily added to the games they already make.

It comes down to the games. If some games come out that are awesome and use the Move well it will sell. I'm hoping for the ultra-accurate golf game. I just hope the wrist strap is really heavy duty or else I'll be replacing the controller every month or so.

I honestly think Sony is missing the big picture. 1, Nintindo is a fun system. it's made for people that really don't want to have time to master a hard core game and this is why all their big sellers are for the most part very easy to play. skill comes in 2nd. And this is why hard core games don't do as well on the wii. To think that Sony will some how pick up and bring this style of game play to hard core games is laughable at best because if hardcore gamers wanted that kind of game play the numbers would have reflected it. Not to say that a new controler interface is not long over due, because in fact it is. I just think Sony will have entered the game a little to late at this point to make any real differnce. They can't give away move for free and people will be hard pressed to buy enough move's to play against friends. Nintindo has one thing going for it, wii motes were in every box from the start. M-soft might be heading in the right direction. And I say,"might be." because if done right? you won't have to stop using the controller you have now, but rather use Natal with your controller. And if dev's see a need? ($$$$$) can add more and more Natal user interface.
As far as I can tell for sony It's like you or I trying to beat Jordon in a game of b-ball.

I think part of the success/failure to Wii was the fact that it was the first as well as it mainly being targeted at a family (audience) instead of individuals. The real games that shined in the single player area on Wii were mostly their "original" games like Zelda & Metroid (which I think was probably one of the best games made with motion control in mind.

Sony should take more heed to those games since I believe that's the market they'll have to satisfy the most.
