Morning Hangover #71 -- Andrew Looks For Feedback, Patrick Has TV Envy

We've just arrived back from San Francisco after attending the annual Game Developers Conference, and even though PAX East is already just around the corner, Feedback cannot be ignored. Since we're back in the studio for this week's episode of Feedback, however, we need some help from you fine folk.

    Watching Sony's Move presentation and seeing what they are selling as big titles, I feel like developers seem to be pushing Move way too much. I would like to see Sony sell this product of theirs, but I'm afraid that they will give developers an extra incentive to develop on the Move to *move* more of this product. In the end, even without the incentive, the games might suffer in other departments that might be more important to players because either resources are diverted or using the technology becomes an excuse for shoddy game development. I only bring this up because most developers interviewed didn't know what the product actually added to their game other than terms like "accuracy!" or "movement!".

    Many "hardcore" gamers believe that motion control is just a gimmick, I tend to agree with them for the most part. Then I remember that there were many painters against the new ideas/techniques that the renaissance introduced, the same thing happened later with Pablo Picasso and Cubism. They had the same fear that we do, that artists (in this case game developers) would completely throw away all the classical ideas and techniques that they grew up with (in this case stop supporting regular controllers and the game-play mechanics that go with them and just go with motion control). However, they did not throw away all the other styles of art, but it allowed artists to better express themselves in whatever style they felt fit them. That does not mean that all Renaissance and Cubism paintings were good and that there were absolutely no bad paintings during the Renaissance and Cubism movement. But as the technique matured it gave the artist more options. If motion control turns out to be a fad it might just discourage game developers from using it in the future, but if it ends up working and allows more game mechanics, styles, and variety in games, I think that's cool! I just need to be convinced first.

    It seems the big news out of GDC is Sony Move. Most people are quite fairly comparing it to the Wii. (I've been calling it the PS3ii) Do you think Sony may be able to use what looks to be Nintendo's technology to win back the same hardcore audience that Nintendo alienated? Nintendo is trying to win them back with Metroid, Mario, and possibly Zelda- but is it too little too late? We won't know until we see full games, but what do you think?

    Most gamers, more specifically, non-hardcore know very little about the industry, and pickup mostly just the triple A titles like MW2 or halo, and in the process miss several well made games that are not as well publisized. Is this issue something that the industry as a whole needs to rectify?

    Now that Nintendo has had great success with the Wii, and started the motion control bandwagon that Sony is jumpin on, do you think that the next Nintendo system will be motion control, or will Nintendo jump into the realm of HD gaming and return to a normal controller? I love the innovation of the Wii, but the gameplay of some of the games (like Twilight Princess)were better with a regular controller pluged in. Do you think that motion control will become a thing of the past when the next generation of systems come out?

    I know this has been discussed before but i been reading a lot of reviews and the comments from gamers on this years games and i have to say that gamers are becoming increasingly jaded when it comes to the standard of what makes a game good. From people hating games for looking dated or calling games nothing more than interactive movies, it has really gotten out of hand. Even i myself fall into this trap sometimes but i at least try not to come off as a total fanboy. When we strip away the amazing graphics, enthralling sound design, and fluid game mechanics what are we left with that makes a game stand out? For me, if the story and characters don't stand out on their own then i already think the final package has been short changed. What's your take on this topic?

    So God of War 3 is finally out, and I think everyone is waiting to hear from Patrick and the team on what they think of the game COMPARED to Dante's Inferno. What are explicit examples of why God of War 3 is on a different level than a game like Dante's Inferno, if it is? I was one who agreed with Patrick's review, but I also see it very fitting to discuss how God of War 3 transcends a "cookie cut" version of itself, especially since many didn't particularly agree with your Inferno review.

    with the shake up at infinity ward, i got to thinking, is there some sort of video game developers union that could help in this situation and if not, do you see the creation of one after this gets sorted out (especially if it looks shady on activisions side)?

    Do you think motion controls will become the new standard for the next console generation? If yes, then do you think they will offer a choice between the old standard controls and motion controls? I personally hate motion controls and shudder to think that I'll have to give up console gaming because they won't let me use the old control system.

    With the recent PS3 crash and Xbox not being able to access paid Arcade games or DLC if you are not online, and the recent issues with Bioshock already having it's "DLC" on the disc; do you feel that DLC itself may be facing it's inevitable backlash?

    Heres a question for you guys if you feel like taking a break from all the console talk. I've been noticing a big increase in Sci-Fi MMO's. There are multiple Sci-Fi MMOs going into beta which all look awesome, the thing I have noticed though, is that it seems many people are breaking away from the traditional fantasy MMO. For example, I have noticed a big increase in EVE online, and WoW isn't increasing in subscribers, and other fantasy games aren't growing that fast. Do you guys think this is just a temporary break from fantasy games, or do you think this shows an increasing trend which could put multiple fantasy MMOs out of business and increase the ammount of Sci-Fi MMOs?

    Do you think emirsion is fine as it is? I mean whan I was playing Uncharted at times I forgot that I even had a controller in my hand but when I am playing my Wii I notice that I have a controller in my hand and never feel like I am in the game. I just don't find it fun.

    In this era of entertainment, video game technology has evolved into discs and downloadable arcade games. These forms of what may seem simplicity are actually a source of problems for a lot of gamers. I say this after having bought a copy of FFXIII (360) to find that one of the discs, brand new straight from the box, had already been scratched and unplayable, from what was most likely a scratch during manufacturing. These small scratches from the most minute accidents cause major data loss and cause discs to be unusable and are major problems for todays gamers.

    Should we as consumers have to deal with these issues with the amount of money we invest into these game? I still have working video games consoles and cartridges that have seen hell on earth and still manage to play, a lot of these said cartridges are even older then I am. With the technologies today are cartridges really inferior to discs? Could the next two steps forward mean one step back for the industry?

    Arcade games downloaded straight onto the consoles cause problems between transfers of profiles and the inability to play on a system whether or not the games are stored onto a hard drive. Should we have to deal with the issues of never being able to play our already paid for arcade games just because we cannot access our profiles whether they are banned or stolen?

    With the complexities of downloaded games and the fragile discs, will technology companies learn from these mistakes in the next generations consoles?

    With the growing emphasis on the concept of motion control as the future of gaming, how does the Feedback crew feel about the gaping lack of motion control content geared for the mentally and physically challenged? I would imagine that motion control has the capability to allow a staggering number of new players into the game space. Players who were previously alienated from gaming due to traditional limitations. I would certainly hope that these people are not all put out to dry when the bar of entry to the future of gaming becomes the ability to stand and deliver ridiculous feats of acrobatics.

    It seems that the industry is obviously embracing the aspect of motion enacted game play (Wii, Playstation move, Natal, etc.), is this a trend you think will continue onto the next generation of consoles, whenever that may be? And do you think that motion control opens up more opportunities for innovation from developers, or is the level of innovation about the same or lower than a game developed for a default controller.
