Just how much influence did your actions in Mass Effect have on Mass Effect 2? There were 700 plot hooks brought over from the original game, BioWare lead cinematic designer Armando Troisi revealed during a presentation at the Game Developers Conference this afternoon.
Troisi revealed that it's not feasible to let players change the major narrative direction of the game's story (whatever you do, the story's headed in the same direction), but that BioWare is always looking at the smaller details and how they can carry forward the player's choices.
Gotta wonder how many will end up carrying into Mass Effect 3...

So long as I don't have to do any more mining for minerals in ME3, I'll be happy.

Don't forget people that the choices aren't just gameplay. I'm sure they include things like if you got your character up to level 60 in ME1, or what gender you made your character, or if they were earth born or a spacer, all the little things like that add up quick.
I think that when the variables from ME1 are incorporated into ME2 and then ME2 is played through, it is assumed that all those choices from ME1 are acted upon in ME2 and therefore when you load you ME2 saved games into ME3 then the "choices" from ME1 and ME2 will be incorporated into ME3.
I doubt that ME1 saved games will be able to be loaded into ME3. That would increase the difficulty of the programming by a factor of... well a relatively large number. So it will probably work like ME2 in that you can use a saved game from the immediate predecessor or just make a new character.

@PrometheanArsonist
The trinket the consort gave you opens a Promethean ruin somewhere on a planet, I can't recall where but if you have the trinket it'll open and tell you something about the ruin
@ABXPuPpet ...700 choices makes sense, all the bit characters that stop and ask you to do something or they don't because you didn't do anything for them in the first. A good example is the reporter on the citadel, if you botch the interview in ME1, they you get angry at her for making you look bad in ME2.
You have to remember it's not 700 separate instances, its 700 choices, so good, bad and neutral all count as one each.
ME2 is one of the best games out and I hope they keep adding dlc for a long time to come.

I don't care how many choices they have in the game....just so long as Tali is one of them.
25SecretAsianMan
In ME3, everyone dies, except Tali who takes off her mask and ends up being Master Chief.
ROUGEBLOCK
That's what you call one anal developer!

I imagine a number of those only affect the Galaxy news reports, but I see little things everywhere--from email to dialogue choices. Very cool.

Conrad Verner is probably going to end up being the final boss.

I know it will be difficult to do (maybe too difficult), but I think that it would be interesting to give the player the option to either branch out and team up with more characters (also with the choice of choosing between morally good characters, or morally bad characters) or give them the option to be more independent (with less teammates or giving them the option to be completely by him or herself) throughout the majority of the game.
I think these options could be pulled of with extra (hopefully not unnecessary) effort in the making of the next game and in the end would be worth it because it seems to be possible to still make the game go with the main story while at the same time, it would give players a new and amazing experience of changing the background stories of characters throghout the game. This would cause the players to feel more drawn into the game since its as if they are unlimited to choices and with all of these different choices it would probably influence players to replay the game over and over again in many different ways (which could bring up sales for the game for some of the more stingy people since they feel like they would play it a lot). I don't have Mass Effect 2 yet but I don't think this idea has been used that much.

Bioware needs to contact Jay Z so he can make a song called "700 problems" for Mass Effect 3
If you're having species problems I feel bad for you son
I got 700 problems but aliens ain't one.

people you have to remember that these 700 decisions actually divide into at least 2 different decisions for each opportunity(paragon/renegade). then take in affect if you decide one course of action lets say renegade then if could end that sub-storyline. Where as if you chose the paragon route it could extend side story to even further decisions. Also decisions are made each time you chose to investigate different worlds. All these choices you made and no offense you will only remember those that dealt with the main story or your crew members.

ha haaa finished da game many times and my ass its 700 choices stop being dramatic
Acerlux
Holy crap. Just finished Mass Effect, can't seem to remember making 700 decisions, but wow.
Ariellog
700 choices that had no impact on Me2 awesome ...

I never played Mass Effect 1, then I picked up Mass Effect on a whim and was very impressed. A few missions after Horizon I decided to pick up Mass Effect 1. I was amazed how much different the game was, but still the same. The second, IMHO, is much better and better streamlined than the first. Never-the-less, I decided to go pro-human/paragon in Mass Effect 1 and 2. If a human was doing wrong or good, I would not hurt them or hinder them and I would try to help them. If an alien was doing wrong, they deserved to be put down, minus mission objectives and team mates. With that in mind, when I finished ME 1 and went to ME 2, I started noticing small conversations of people that I did or did not help out previously. Some were just news announcements others were people who randomly I could talk to. "Hey Shepard remember me?"

I have a feeling one of the biggest effects that probably will effect the story line is if a player starts a relationship with Liara and stays faithful. Think about it. She is one of the few characters who can't die in ME1 or ME2 which might explain why the developers don't join you and can possibly die in the finale. Also she is a possible love for both genders. The developers said she will play a bigger role in ME3 and staying faithful or not will have greater effects. I'm very excited but ME3 is going to take a long long long time to make with all these different carry-on choices.
ScienceOfSleep
wow. im guessin they will have to have 4 disks for the last game
