At GDC 2010, Adam Sessler caught up with Dennis Shirk, Producer of Civilization V, and got the inside word on everything cool about this world-conquering, turn-based strategy game.

Adam asked him about one of the most striking improvements: "We switched from square tiles to hexes," Shirk said.

"This allowed the art team to go all out, creating an organic, beautiful, believable world. That's the main thing we wanted to bring across the entire game -- to make it look like something you might look down on from an airplane; it's just beautiful."

You be the judge of the game's beauty by clicking the video below:

    Hex tiles - brilliant
Smarter AI reactions to my gameplay - brilliant

Keeping the city mechanics the same - priceless
what i loved about Civ IV was mastering the art of building specialized cities & getting that one sweet-spot for a production city w/ a river or coast nearby for money/food to stabilize. I think the city mechanics themselves were nearly flawless.

I will miss, however, sending a stack of Elephants, macemen, & trebuchets in for attack, followed by stacks of long/cross-bowmen to city-sit.

What are the system requirements? I'll wait on getting/building a new computer until I know.

I was already excited before watching this... after watching you can multiply that excitement by about 100.
