Seemingly unaware that we are all steeped in GDC 2010 coverage at the moment, the NPD Group has gone ahead and released the official software and hardward sales numbers for February 2010.
Here is how it all brokedown:
Video Game Software Sales, February 2010:
- 360 -- BioShock 2, Take Two, 562,900
- Wii -- New Super Mario Bros Wii, Nintendo of America, 555,600
- 360 -- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Activision, 314,300
- Wii -- Just Dance, Ubisoft, 275,400
- Wii -- Wii Sports Resort w/ Wii Motion Plus, Nintendo of America, 272,500
- PS3 -- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Activision, 252,800
- 360 -- Mass Effect 2, Electronic Arts, 246,500
- PS3 -- Dante's Inferno: Divine Edition, Electronic Arts, 242,500

A couple of things..
[Venting starts here]:
1.] Just Dance needs to JUST DIE.
Any of the games from numbers 6-10 should've beaten out Just Dance for the #4 spot.
Someone who worked on that game must've sold their soul to Satan to get sales figures up that high.
Whoever bought & played that game is among the bane of my gaming existence & does not deserve to be called a true Gamer. [[Glares @ all the feminine NON-gamers that bought the d@mn game]] (=_=)
(No respectable, sober, masculine Gamer will buy/play that game, unless they lost a bet to someone, or are coerced into it.)
Sorry, but Just Dance & the CASUAL "gamers" that bought that game just SICKENS me. As in, you just made throw-up go up my esophagus.
2.] Are you serious!? The DS is STILL @ #1 ?!?
The only reason I could think of, as to why its still up there is because of the (then coming) release of Pokemon SoulSilver & HeartGold.
The DS better not be up there come April's NPD sales report.
A main console deserves to be up there, not some handheld system.

I have Heavy Rain and Dante's Inferno,.....and DI is more fun to play. HR is good and I enjoyed it, but DI is exciting. Great graphics, great play control, great story telling. DI is the complete package. O yeah the haters will quote parts of reviews that say the game is bad, but if you read them you will see that many contradict themselves.
I think in the end both games will be considered classics. I hope to see more of both. Still, for me DI was just more fun to play.

what are u talking about? Heavy rain has sold a tonne for a niche game on PS3, it was #1 for awhile on VGCHARTZ.
Anyways, sales dont mean much, the wii tells us that much.

It's kind of nauseating and not a little depressing to see stuff like Just Dance (Just Make Me Gag) outsell Mass Effect 2 and Heavy Rain. Stupid soccer moms!

You realise NDp is just the US right?? go to www.vgchartz.com, World wide, the ps3 has been outselling the 360 for well over a year, the 360 once had a 9 million lead, it is now 5. The US is not the whole world. 360 does well in the US, but even in MS home country PS3 keeps up and many months now outsells 360 there. it is not 2-0 360, World Wide PS3 has outsold 360 this year and all of 2009. In europe it is 2:1 Ps3, japan 360 does nothing really.

The good news here is that all 3 console makers are doing well and we have a lot of great gaming to look forward to. This generation of consoles is by far the best, and with the very tough competition (add Apple and maybe OnLive) this is only going to get better for us consumers!

I don't think everyone should be putting so much emphasis on sales. I mean, I have a wii, I bought it, but honestly I really don't play it at all. It comes out maybe 2 or 3 times a year, but that's it. Just because a console is selling well doesn't mean it is of any quality.

I read on GameSpot that the NPD says sales are down 15% for February, but seeing how games like Modern Warfare 2 and New Super Mario Bros are still high on the list, I think this illustrates why sales are down, and that's because sales of releases from the end of the year carry over.
I mean, look at the games that came out late 2008 that probably were still selling in early 2009. They released Dead Space, Fallout 3, Fable 2, Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, Gears of War 2, Motorstorm 2, Call of Duty WaW, Tomb Raider Underworld, Endwar, Mirror's Edge, Left 4 Dead, , all within a month between mid-October and mid-November. Surely sales of games like those had to carry over into early 2009, that's why I'm guessing February sales in 2009 were greater than those of February 2010.

wow, Bioshock 2 sold that well, did not expect that.
Looking at this I realize something, MAG and Heavy Rain did much worse than I forseen. I typically dont fall into Sony Exclusives are GOD category, but I would have expect those to have atleast put up some numbers.

did anyone else read that crap about the analyst saying the PS3 will surpass the Wii in sales by 2013? HAHA i don't think that is even possible. I am not trying to sound like i am bashing it, but just do the math the Wii has over 35M MORE units then the PS3 worldwide it would have to outsell the Wii by 973K units EVERY single month for the next 3 years.
How do i get a job as a analyst and make up crap predictions and get paid tons of money for it.
Congrats to the DS/DSi for breaking a February record in sales for the month :-) it's only going to get higher with the DSi XL releasing later this month.
Also congrats tot he 360 for being the #1 selling home console for the month

Check that out, console exclusive content does make a difference. Last year the PS3 had Arkham Asylum's Joker, and now it's Dante's Inferno's Divine Edition.
Shocked to see the 360 with that many sales though. It beat the Wii. Does that happen often?

I wonder if the PS3 sales where affected at all due to the serious shortages they've been experiencing lately. Also, I'm glad to see heavy rain did so well in only one week. I have a feeling that it will be one of those games that doesn't ever sell amazingly well, but sells consistent over time.
