Epic Games isn't ready to talk about the next Gears of War (or any other projects) yet, but as a company whose foundation is built upon technology, when Epic Games asks you to come see the latest additions to their game engines, there's a chance you're getting a hint at what's next for the company. At the Game Developers Conference, Epic Games invited the press to see some demonstrations of what's possible in the latest version of Unreal Engine 3.
Remember the meat cube? This year, it's the mercury cube. The mercury cube included alongside a part of a series of jungle, Mayan-looking environments. It certainly didn't look like a Gears of War setting. This was tied to a number of other technical demos that included manipulation of vines and the ease at which developers can alter the dimensions of objects on-the-fly.
There was also several fly-throughs of an urban, New York-style environment. It looked extremely rough (no surprise, it was a tech demo) and Epic Games VP Mark Rein cautioned to the audience that what we were looking was "ugly test art." His next comment, however, was telling.
"One day we'll show you what we're doing with this," said Rein. "When you see what we're doing with this, it's going to blow your mind."
Start guessing, readers.

I've heard rumors for awhile now that Epic may be working on a PS3 exclusive....that would be Epic!
spicypooptastic
it will be pretty good I assume, but there only so much you can do with this generations hardware. Sure you can get it more colors, more shine etc.
But the real thing that will blow people away is when they show off their engine for next generation, that will be crazy.
I think next gen the graphics will look so good it will no longer be a topic of discussion, kinda like now when no one talks about how many bits a game has, that used to be the selling point!

"Remember the meat cube? This year, it's the mercury cube"
They had that last year also. just saying.
and i wouldn't say that the "New York-style environment" mostly every city was destroyed by the locust.
I would bet it's a new game or something.
can not wait till someone posts a video on YouTube of the demo.
*thumbs up for the Unreal Engine and Epic Games*

Unreal is the future of graphical technology. Where most developers either create their engines from the ground up for their games and then forget about it after the game is done, or they pay to use a previously existing engine (Like Unreal). I'm glad that Epic is the one ongoing and dedicated company to constantly improve and innovate graphical tech. It's a very promising method of running a company. And what surprises me the most is that even after looking at the huge success that Unreal had in selling off its technology to so many current games, why haven't there been more developers releasing a graphic engine to compete with Unreal. Obviously it's hard to do, but definitely possible and would certainly profitable.

The Unreal engine just add a coat of vaseline on top of everything to make it shiny.

As I've said before Jazz Jackrabbit 3.

I hope they fix the shimmery graphical textures which nearly every Unreal game I've seen has, oh and add more color Epic, you brought invented new shades of brown with Gears 2

It didn't say weather or not it was Gears 3, so it may still be Gears 3. However it's more likely that it's something...well, bigger, better and more badass...
Kidding aside, if it's not Gears 3, then my money is on Unreal 3. It's been awhile since they've done anything with the Unreal franchise, the Unreal 2 was "meh" and they might want to go back to PC-centric FPSs.

I wish they would fix they're buggy engine. Every game that uses it is has significantly more bugs and glitches than games that don't use the unreal engine. I love Gears 1 and Borderlands, but both those games use the unreal engine and they are both riddled with bugs. I hate gears 2 and that game has more technical issues than Gears 1 and Borderlands combined.

Sounds interesting. Is there a video of the tech demo coming soon?
lileodfabio
iknow. they have never failed to haveone of the best graphics and i can't wait for gears of war 3.
lileodfabio
i know. they have never failed to have one of the best graphics and i can't wait for gears of war 3
ProjektX13
Whatever it is I just hope its action horror.

Man, Unreal really is unreal; they always do so much that had previously seemed impossible. I wouldn't be surprised if the first graphics that are completely realistic comes from them.
