Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light GDC 2010 Screens

The next big adventure for Tomb Raider heroine Lara Croft won’t be the full-blown franchise reboot that’s supposedly in the works, but rather the downloadable title, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, scheduled for release on the PC, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade this summer.

In case you were wondering what the first ever downloadable Lara Croft title (which also happens to include two-player co-op) looks like in action, you can find a fresh batch of newly discovered screenshots in our forbidden photo gallery.

Throw me the link!

No the franchise did not "die awhile back" and yes people DO give a crap about it still. Just because YOU don't, doesn't mean the REST OF THE WORLD DOESN'T EITHER. Aaand in vein of Adventurers its very common for the titles to vary...I.E. the first Indiana Jones movie was ONLY called "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and the second one was "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom".

I think that this new design angle is exactly what the series needs, I like the title as it feels more right just to call it "Lara Croft blah blah blah", feels more like Indiana Jones that way... I think making the game have Co-Op is extremely important as its really worked FANTASTIC for the LEGO games. And along THAT line, this looks like a more mature version of one of those LEGO titles.

If there is a Tomb Raider REBOOT game in the works, then I hope its more of an open world experience game, like Farcry 2 (without the malaria).

I really look forward to this game, I'll buy it for my XBox and for my PC.

I'm looking forward to this, though I am disappointed there won't be a disc sequel to the story that Legend and Underworld were working on. I hope this was a move by Crystal Dynamics to make the XBLA/PSN game and not a call by Square Enix. I thought Underworld would have done better had it not released during that hot 2008 window where games like Fable 2, Fallout 3, Geares 2, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, Left 4 Dead, Dead Space, Motorstorm 2, Far Cry 2, Call of Duty Waw, Mirror's Edge, Endwar and whatnot all released in one month between mid-October and mid-November, it was too much competition for Underworld to do well which is sad because besides it being buggy it was still a pretty good game. Still, I think the to-date sales of Underworld broke over 2 million, so it didn't do too horribly. As for the new name I guess I can't really complain, I mean the series was known as Tomb Raider, which changed to Lara Croft Tomb Raider after those horrible movies, so I guess "Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light" just follows that path of them not knowing what to call it, but I still enjoy the games and hope to enjoy this next one.

If they are planning on it being a downloadable instead of a full game it means it's not good enough for it to be an actual game.

I guess she's not technically "raiding tombs" in this one, eh?
