GDC 2010: Sony Motion Controller Officially Called PlayStation Move

Updated 4:20 PM: Sony just revealed that the PlayStation Move will be available in a variety of packages. The only price point Sony is sharing at this time is the PlayStation Move Starter Kit, which will include the motion controller, a PlayStation Eye camera and a game, all for under $100. The controller will also be sold individually, and there will also be a bundle that will include everything in the starter bundle plus a PS3 console.

Check out the video announcement from the GDC 2010 Press Conference.

Sony Debuts PlayStation Move at GDC 2010 »

Original story follows:

Finally, Sony’s PlayStation 3 motion controller has an official name: PlayStation Move.

Shuhei Yoshida, Sony's senior vice president of product development, made the official announcement today during Sony's Game Developers Conference press conference in San Francisco.

Since Sony first unveiled the motion controller and camera combo at E3 2009, the company has kept the project relatively close to the vest, only showing it off on a handful of occasions at industry events, and remaining absolutely silent on what the final product would end up being named.

During Tokyo Game Show 2009, the name rumor train started rolling when quotes emerged in which developers referred to the motion controller as "Sphere." Then "Gem" started making the rounds after EA CEO John Riccitiello referred to it as such during a meeting with industry analysts. Sony quickly shot down "Gem," explaining that it was an "early codename" for the device. However, the name popped up again a few weeks back at DICE 2010 when Disney Interactive media group president Stephen Wadsworth used "Gem" during his keynote presentation while discussing the upcoming motion control technologies from Microsoft and Sony.

The "PlayStation Arc" burst onto the scene, and quickly gained momentum after a domain name application surfaced, which showed the Sony had purchased "PlayStationArc.com" in October of 2009. It wasn’t long before stories started popping up in which developers were quoted using the term "Arc" in reference to the motion controller. The most recent appearance of "Arc" came when THQ's president and CEO Brian Farrell used the term during an investor call last month. However, Sony, once again, stepped in to make clear that “Arc,” like "Gem" and “Sphere” were merely codenames for the device.

And wouldn’t you know it, Sony was telling the truth, and now PlayStation Move has arrived.

Shameless rip-off. I wonder what the industry would be saying if it were MSFT doing this. But don't worry, they probably come up with something similar, because Natal is one step ahead, so they can allow add actual accessory for the touch feedback.

I couldn't help thinking about the Wii when I was watching the video.
Yeah, it's got 1:1 but so what? It's like trying to sell a 120hhz TV to a market that just bought a 60hz TV.
It might attract some people, but most casual people won't tell the difference except one is black, costs more, and doesn't give much different than what they have.

I see Sony losing major $$ over this. They will need a large campaign to attract even the smallest number of consumers.

Sony is not going to be able to capitalize on what Nintendo has already done.
The Nintendo Wii was the revolution in gaming. People bought it, played it for what it's worth, and now they're moving on with their lives. The "Move" has no place in this market, but to "move" on.

I hadn't realised until seeing that picture how similar to the Wii it is. It even has one shorter controller with a thumbstick, and one longer one with the D-pad. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. Playing PS3/Xbox 360 type games with Wii controls could be pretty cool.

ehhh.. not really impress with the sony motion controller.. i do like that motion controller that they used on their fighting DEMO, as of the SOCOM 4 motion controller, it doesnt look very impressive to me.. the guy who used the DEMO controller was just sitting in a couch.. WOW.. c mon sony!! i m a huge ps3 fan and i don't care about the crapbox 360 but when it comes to showing off your new gadget on ur conference, im not impress at all, only 1 gadget impressed me and i mentioned it already. SOCOM 4 does look KICK ass for sure. Sony, U guys need more improvement on your motion controller. Its a RIP OFF version of the WII for sure.

Despite its crappy name, I'm still kind of interested in whether this will be cool or an epic failure. On one side, I could see how it could provide us with games that hardcore gamers have wanted to see on the Wii, but never did/never will; Or will it be following in the Wii's footsteps so much that it begins to attract a huge group of casual gamers that cause the PS3 to cater only to them and leave the hardcore gamers in the dust? Maybe it will be a combination of both attracting casual gamers, while still delivering to, or at least not effecting the hardcore crowd.

Honestly, I have been trying to stay behind Nintendo, but this spreads disaster for them. Sony has just 1uped them in every way possible. Nintendo used to be that innovative console with a whole new style of playing. Now that the Playstation Move is out, Nintendo really has nothing going for them at this point except their exclusive titles and their install base.

Honestly i don't know if the massive amount of existing Wii owners are willing to fork over more money for an upgraded version of the wii. Maybe Microsoft and Sony are a little too late to draw in the amount of people that Nintendo first did with the wii.

The Wii gets a lot of crap for it's name, but we've all gotten used to it. Plus that allows for names like "Wiimote" instead of "Wii Remote". But the "Move"? Hey guys, hand me the "Move". or I love playing with my Move.

Lame. Arc was much better. Although I'm not sure what Arc has to do with the device.

Well I'm kinda disappointed that it is going to called "move", also that it looks exactly the same with the stupid ball at the top. I am about as excited for this as I was for the Eye Toy, nothing really "wowed" me, but the Eyepet and Gladiator game look pretty cool.
