Updated 4:20 PM: Sony just revealed that the PlayStation Move will be available in a variety of packages. The only price point Sony is sharing at this time is the PlayStation Move Starter Kit, which will include the motion controller, a PlayStation Eye camera and a game, all for under $100. The controller will also be sold individually, and there will also be a bundle that will include everything in the starter bundle plus a PS3 console.
Check out the video announcement from the GDC 2010 Press Conference.
Original story follows:
Finally, Sony’s PlayStation 3 motion controller has an official name: PlayStation Move.
Shuhei Yoshida, Sony's senior vice president of product development, made the official announcement today during Sony's Game Developers Conference press conference in San Francisco.
Since Sony first unveiled the motion controller and camera combo at E3 2009, the company has kept the project relatively close to the vest, only showing it off on a handful of occasions at industry events, and remaining absolutely silent on what the final product would end up being named.
During Tokyo Game Show 2009, the name rumor train started rolling when quotes emerged in which developers referred to the motion controller as "Sphere." Then "Gem" started making the rounds after EA CEO John Riccitiello referred to it as such during a meeting with industry analysts. Sony quickly shot down "Gem," explaining that it was an "early codename" for the device. However, the name popped up again a few weeks back at DICE 2010 when Disney Interactive media group president Stephen Wadsworth used "Gem" during his keynote presentation while discussing the upcoming motion control technologies from Microsoft and Sony.
The "PlayStation Arc" burst onto the scene, and quickly gained momentum after a domain name application surfaced, which showed the Sony had purchased "PlayStationArc.com" in October of 2009. It wasn’t long before stories started popping up in which developers were quoted using the term "Arc" in reference to the motion controller. The most recent appearance of "Arc" came when THQ's president and CEO Brian Farrell used the term during an investor call last month. However, Sony, once again, stepped in to make clear that “Arc,” like "Gem" and “Sphere” were merely codenames for the device.
And wouldn’t you know it, Sony was telling the truth, and now PlayStation Move has arrived.

The controller could've gone without that out-of-place orb at the top..
..or at least half-way embedded into the controller, so the controller's contours continue & smooth out at the top, just like the bottom part of the controller.

Oh the lulz we can have with this thing. From the obvious rip off of the wiimote (same as the current controller is just a SNES controller with arms) to the mood ring jokes, to the comparisons to a marital aid (yes I used clean terminology to make the comparison), now finally the name being something that will scare fat kids is the latest way that Sony has proven its inability to understand the gaming market and the place it fits.
I can't wait to see the bleeding plastic babydoll (PS2, remember?) commercial for this one.

By the way.....does that little knob have vibrating feedback as well?.... so my wife can play her...uh...flying games?

You are all forgetting the most major thing that Sony, in their infinite wisdom still can't beat the under-ninten-dogs over in pipe land in.....Price. They can come up with motion controllers, make Tekken Party and New Super Racial Profiling Minority Sisters in 1028 HD; but in the end, when the dad, who is fighting to keep food on his table, goes to Wal-Mart with his tightly budgeted Christmas funds so he can play Santa Clause to his greedy little minions, it's going to be the console that he can get console can afford AND a couple of games the little spawns of Satan who burn through everything that has a control scheme for without breaking his bank. Like a hot prom date (male or female for those wondering if I m trying to keep PC), Nintendo is ready to go down at a moment's notice just to show who can survive the console wars in the ugliest part of a recession.

Basically, as certain others keep saying, the Wii is a fad which so happens to never end ever. The same as Pokemon meaning not a fad at all meaning every hardcore gamer on every system will be outed. Well, maybe just for Nintendo. Boy, they don't know their audience at all. Makes me wonder who they voted for in 2008...

Kids of the future will be super buff if they grow up on only vid games that make you move, karate !

The kids of the future are going to be buff if they grow up on nothing but video games that make you move and do things like say...um... martial arts, we could rule the Universe.

I guess looking gay is becoming a trend, glowing ball ?

I think it's kool just have to wait and see what happends after they release it to the public keep in mind that the PS3 is a Hardcore gamers wet dream and by giving us a new set of controlers for gaming just adds more bang for your bucks.

Honestly I think this may be great for Nintendo. 3rd party developers have more of a reason now to develop motion based games. With nearly everyone owning a Wii, which console do you think they're going to buy the game for?
Tim_1138
I thought I told them! I already HAVE a Wii!

When will they ever learn......

ahh ... can't Sony at least be a little creative? And Motion Plus seems to work really well, the little I've seen of it. The strap for your wrist looks identical, except black. Natal has some promise, but I think if a few developers can stop being lazy and actually make something awesome with the Wii (or PS3 I suppose, after it comes out), Motion control will cease to be a gimick or for casual games only. Look at the Force Unleashed on the Wii. The motion controls on that were actually pretty good, except for the lightsaber fighting. I hope the new one uses motion plus!

Man what a rip off!!!!! Seiously Sony, its too much the same as a Wii controller with a bulb stuck on its top. You've gotta be kidding me. this was Sony's top surprise? Dissapointing. Its funny when Sony charges against the Wii and after that copy the same control...C'mon! You bet your ass its more precise, its a Wii controller v.2.0

So does this officially make sixaxis a failure?

At first when they said "playstion move" i was thinking what the hell. did they just put a bunch on names in a hat and playstion move was the one that was pulled. But at the end of the Conf. it sounded pretty natural to say..... Also quick question to all the Wii owners, do you guys play anything other than Wii Sports? I just dont get it, i have 4 friends that own a Wii and everytime i come over, thats all we play. I think if playstation really wants to kick nintendo's ass, Playstion should come out with a sporting/workout game, with next gen graphics, and have Chuck Norris on the cover.
The Cutting Edge
Okay Im going to let everyone know why this will fail. Its because the PS3 already has a controller! This is a gimmick! Im sorry to say but the Nintendo Wii would not have had nearly as high of motion success if they packaged the Wii with a basic controller out of the box along with the Wiimote. When giving the customers and (more importantly) the developers the choice between a basic dual analog control set up or a wiimote motion controller I can guarantee you 2/3 of games out there will be basic controllers. Aside from the rare innovative motion game most games we are going to see will be family, mini game compilations. Or racing games, or something along those gimmicky lines. Best of luck to Sony but unless they go the Microsoft direction and state that this is purely casual based and not hardcore like God of War or Uncharted, then this will disappear into mediocrity.

Really? I own a PS3, time to start calling it the PSWii.
The-b-man
You know this really is the step the ps3 needed to get ahead of the Xbox..........forget the wii, xbox and ps3 have already beaten it but the
xbox is more popular, this isnt going to fail out like the ps eye and will devinatly sell hardware unlike in my opinion project natal.
SizzlewickMagicfart
LMAO!! i thought he was telling the playstation to move when he anounced it!
