GameStop is on its way out, according to NinjaBee art director Brent Fox. All retail establishments whose primary sales are driven by boxed video games are on their way out, actually.
"I think GameStop is not going to be around shortly," said Fox during a presentation at the Game Developers Conference discussing NinjaBee's biggest lessons making downloadable games.
NinjaBee is probably best known for A Kingdom for Keflings and Cloning Clyde.
Fox pointed to the moves that Electronic Arts is making as primary evidence, as EA recently shuttered Pandemic Studios while spending $300 million on acquiring social-oriented developer Playfish.
"I think the change [to digital] is happening rapidly, where I think GameStop is not going to be around shortly," he said. "I started talking about this six months ago. I was saying 'oh, five years.' ... I've revised my particular prediction to three years and I still think that's talking too long. My [business] partner's original prediction was a little over two years and I think he's going to win."
Do you want to take him up on that bet?

I'm not buying games digitally until I have the bandwidth to download the thing in some kind of reasonable amount of time. Period.
In Japan, download speeds may not be such a problem, but in this country the infrastructure just ain't there yet. It will take a lot more than 5 years to get it there, too.

Did we not learn anything from the apocylps3 .... I hate the ridiculous prices on a lot of the used games there, but I still think there is a need for a used games store, and like Ian528 said earlier, their is definitely something to be said for a "hard copy" of a game. I still have many of my older games, that wether I play them or not, I still have the option. I also have the option to resell those games if I want to as well... something I can't do with a digital download...

Everyone is pushing the digital ownership of content. I don't buy it. I want a game I can buy and sell. It is my game on a disk that I buy. Real, physical and not just bits to be taken away on a whim. Digital may win out. But I think physical and disconnected may has a place in our society too. Hence the cries of Gamestops demise are falling on the deaf ears of those waiting in Gamestop lines.

You really want to kill Gamestop? Give every newly released game a unique code you have to enter in on your console of choice to play it.
There goes used games, and GS falls shortly after.

Prognostications of Gamestop's impending demise are greatly exaggerated, I think.
