UbisoftUbisoft has taken a lot of (justifiable) heat for its decision to introduce DRM protection for their PC titles that requires a constant internet connection in order to play the games it's designed to protect. Well, the situation didn't get any help over the weekend when Ubisoft’s servers were hacked, preventing a number of Assassin’s Creed II and Silent Hunter 5 players from accessing their games.

Ubisoft responded via Twitter shortly after complaints started rolling in saying that "95% of players were not affected, but a small group of players attempting to open a game session did receive denial of service errors.”

A few hours later, Ubisoft posted another update, explaining, “We're happy to say ACII & SH5 are withstanding the efforts to crack them. We see the rumors but still confirm no valid cracked versions exist.”

The latest word from Ubisoft is that their servers are "under attack again,” and that "some gamers are experiencing trouble signing in. We’re working on it and will keep you posted."

Clearly, this whole ordeal has a ways to go before it's resolved, and I'm currently waiting to hear back from Ubisoft, so stay tuned.

I seriously doubt that hackers are killing their servers. The people who crack DRM do it for the challenge of breaking unbreakable codes. Every time someone has unveiled their new 'unbeatable' DRM, it has been a personal challenge to the hacking community to prove them wrong, usually ending with a crack available within a week.

It seems odd that their servers were 'attacked' the day that Assassin's Creed 2 was released in Europe. Anyone who has ever played an MMO release week can tell you how stable untested servers are under load.

More likely is that Ubisoft has implemented a buggy DRM scheme that relies on unrealistic demands. I have a dedicated (wired, so no intermittent wifi signal) internet connection, virus and spyware scan every night, clean install of windows every 6-12 months and I still get internet hangups and glitches every day. Just like everybody else.

I've read up on their DRM, and it seems they are lying about needing to be connected to download missions. They have since removed the forum post that detailed how the only thing keeping missions in SH5 from updating was a simple .cfg file line to *unlock* each mission. All the data is already on your PC. Edit them with a text editor and you can activate them yourself.

And as for the line that Ubisoft is using about only 5% of customers being affected?

I've heard a lot of complaining about failed savegame syncing, 15-30minute login times, login timeouts, getting booted from the game every 5 minutes, but I went to the one place I could think of with an active modding community. The Subsim.com forums are always full of people talking about what they want added in, modded out, fixed, altered or just chatting. There are many die-hard fans of the Silent Hunter series there; if anyone was going to pre-order and give them the benefit of the doubt, it would be these guys. If anyone was going to be chatting on the forums, even if their game is working 100%, it would be these guys.

Look at these two polls from the Subsim forums:

    http://www.subsim.com/radior oom/poll.php?do=showresults&am p;pollid=1763
As of the time I write this, 18% can play the game reliably, 39% occasionally, 43% not at all.

    http://www.subsim.com/radior oom/showthread.php?t=160783
61% refusing to purchase until the DRM is removed.

With the US release of Assassin's Creed 2 today, I expect the servers will be receiving a 'renewed attack' right around the time all those american customers get home and try to log in.

And to those people who want a refund for his defective product, too bad. Looking through the main DRM issue threads on Ubisoft's own website reveals that their customer service reps have been ignoring, or in cases where people have actually gotten through, hanging up on any SH5 owners asking about a refund. People have gotten so frustrated, they have started posting the main corporate office phone numbers for their country to get past this and get their money back.

I would like to see a *serious* investigation of Ubisoft, their customer service, and this abomination of a new DRM.

They can count me among the ranks of the people who will buy both games the day they apologize to their customers and remove this DRM. A word to any game developers/publishers: pirates wouldn't have given you any money anyway. Stop trying to get them to buy your game, and start working on games with either no DRM (Elder Scrolls 4 sold horribly, didn't it?) or nonrestrictive/transparent/wor king DRM (strange how steam lets you install on as many computers as you want *and* play while offline...whoever runs that company had better figure out a better business model!).

Get the people who buy your games happy and they will keep buying your games. Piss them off and the only people playing your game will be the people who wouldn't have given you a dime for it anyway.

What in the world is Silent Hunter 5?

The new " Prince of Persia " trailers are out and I must say, I'm not very impressed. The " Prince " has a mutant looking face and his posture and overall anatomy are squatty and totally the wrong image I expected the " Prince of Persia " to have.

It's hard and very unlikely that I or others will purchase a game for $59.99 when we simply can't stomach or relate to the image of the lead character. Drake and all the characters in " Uncharted 2 " are good examples of how to do it right.

Has everyone at " Ubisoft " gone blind or mad ? Whats up with that " Ubisoft " ? Sally Wong 2007.

After punishing innocent players with DRM the servers were still hacked proving that this anti piracy method doesn't work.

UBI must be a bunch of retards with no understanding of the people they are trying to sell to. I must be in that 5% since i could not login with SH5 in days now. UBISOFT is the most greedy company out there and its not fair that they DRM protect some junk thats so buggy that it would be a great set of code to teach students how compiler debuggers work !!!! I hope something is going to happen soon so more companies dont take after this. I remember many years ago when they told us gamers that if piracy was reduced , there would be much cheaper games. Well on the consoles the piracy is no where close to PC piracy. But do games become cheaper ? No , console games are more expensive than PC games!!!!!. Keep on hacking all you hackers out there and i will donate a buck or two to beat companies like this who just want to make money on half ass products like Silent hunter 5. By the way anyone who thinks about buying SH5, Dont !!! You will not get a sub sim worth more than $15. The campaign ends at 1943, and you can only play ONE sub model.

you'd think they'd learn from Spore, but I guess not. Its one thing to want to protect your game, but do it in a way that punishes the bad guys, not the innocent gamers

I think the DRM is a good idea. It is obviously working right now too. I have respect for Ubisoft and I stand by them.

Oh and why complain about this if you knew it was going to happen. You could have bought it at a later date when the servers wern't being flooded with attacks from people who are trying to hack the game. Or even buy the game on a console..... People had other choices.

Honestly if you are stupid enough to buy Ass Creed 2 with ONLINE PLAYABLE only you deserve what you get.. Clearly people are acting out how unfair this DRM is and bogging down the servers. EA will never learn. I hope they burn

I am here, a person completely against pirates and illegally downloading games, asking anybody with the power to crack the PC Version of Assassins Creed 2, Silent Hunter 5, and any other Ubisoft game that uses this disgusting DRM to do so. I am also asking you to download the game any way you want. Ubisoft is alienating so many honest gamers with this new DRM, like me, who plays his games on the go without a constant internet connection. They are, again, hurting innocent gamers who have bought the game legally, and we need to show them that we will not stand for it. I wish I could do it, but I couldn't hack a tooth brush.

Hack the crap out of them guys.

I love how they are trying to just pass the blame...

To ubisoft: ARE YOU BLIND? DON'T PASS THE BLAME! THIS WOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE SUCH STRICT DRM.....IT IS YOUR FAUL!!!!

    sorry for the rant :(

This whole DRM method is retarded and this proves it.

Only 95% affected eh? Doubt it. But thanks for lying to us once again Ubisoft, I won't be buying anymore pc software from you till you learn to wise up.
