When Final Fantasy XIII hits the world, expect a lot of gamer-blowback. Whenever a developer take steps to modernize a beloved franchise, the gamer backlash is strong and ruthless. Fans of Fallout and Fallout 2 hated Fallout 3 because it updated the game world and made the franchise more "fun." Fans of Pac-Man couldn't deal with Ms. Pac-Man because she wore a bow. But even among devoted aficionado communities, few are as protective of "their" series as Final Fantasy fanatics. As you surely know, FFXIII comes out tomorrow for the 360 and the PlayStation 3, and it's going to piss a lot of people off.
X-Play reviewer Rob Manuel played the game for dozens and dozens of hours to provide G4's review. The game is definitely good – four out of five stars good -- but it still might make you very, very angry, particularly if you're a hardcore Final Fantasy fan. Rob's list below is only five of the countless ways FF XIII will leave players fuming:
1) No towns: There is not a single city in the game. There are no stopping places. No Inns. There are no hamlets, burgs or villages. This is a huge change from the previous open-world style FF action you’re used to --and a change from most RPGs, actually. In almost all previous Final Fantasy games going back to the ancient Final Fantasy 1 in the 1980s, you’d enter a homebase style town and work outward from their.
Which brings us to the second thing you’ll hate about Final Fantasy XIII...
2) It’s Very Linear: Final Fantasy XIII is not entirely on a track, but for the first 25 hours(!) or so, you’re going to be moving in a straight line, forward. This, of course, propels the action nicely, but doesn't appeal to gamers who like to feel like they're gaming in the "real" world with limitless possibilities and options. I guess those people can suffer through 25 hours of playing to get to the "good part."

3) No mini-games: There are no arena battles, no Blitz-ball, no Card Battles, none of that stuff on the side that can be a nice break from the main plotline. With fans devoting themselves to minutia of past games' mini-games, this is a big, infuriating change.
4) Little equipment: You’re not going to find a huge variety of weapons in Final Fantasy XIII, and there is no armor at all, so if gearing up is your passion, you’re going to be hating on this game--There’s just not a lot of stuff to purchase. There are items that you can use to level up the weapons that you do have, but not a lot of weapon variety, another huge change from previous gear-heavy FF games.

5) It’s on the 360: This is the first Final Fantasy game for the 360 so lucky number 13 is bound to anger console purists who feel that the Final Fantasy universe belongs only to Sony console owners.
Lest we be accused of always looking on the negative side of things, check back on Wednesday, where we'll detail the five things gamers will absolutely love about Final Fantasy XIII. And for more bile-inducing Final Fantasy anger, check back tomorrow when we'll have a side-by-side video comparison of the 360 and PS3 versions of the game for you to enjoy, dissect and argue over.
I'm sure there are more things you can think of that will anger FF fans. Leave them in our comment section.

Oops, the witcher is technically russian made and bioware's are canadian...my bad.
how about I've been into more non-american, non jrpgs ;)

Ya know, there are quite a few things up there that do disappoint me, and I've been a FF fanboy for some time. Despite all that disappointment, FF has rarely completely let me down, even when it was changing up the formula like crazy (except for FFX2, that was just trash). So I'll still be getting it just to get my FF fix, even if it isn't "true to form". If I really really want all those little things in a next gen RPG, I'll just go back and finish up Last Odyssey like I've been meaning to.

I noticed in the past few years I started playing less and less jrpg's and more and more american made ones. The Witcher was excellent, Bioware's games are always amazing and I just can't see myself being that stoked on final fantasy anymore. The last one I played was XII and I think I'll leave it at that. Leaving the past in the past...I loved IV, V, VI, Tactics, VII, VIII, IX, X and XII.

Personally FFXII was my favorite, why? Because I could WALK AROUND monsters I didn't much care to fight. Now however, it seems like we'll be getting the same random battles that you can't walk around. Oh well, you all have fun with your linearness, I'll be heading back to my gambits thank you very much.

im hoping there is a mob hunt system like in 12, when i got tired of the story or wanted to lvl up i did some mob quest, if the game is all story and no side quest ima be really angry

This was a really pointless list. Point 5 is just stupid. The other 4? We've been hearing all that for a long time already.

Complaint #5 is super silly. Other than that, though, this has me very nervous about the game in general. Then again, you play FF for the story usually, so if the story is solid I could prolly still enjoy it. We'll see, I suppose.

I too find point 5 a little ironic and funny considering Sony isn't the true home for the origin of the series, just the next system that happened to get to helm between the 2-D and 3-D change.

I'm interested in the upcoming changes and cant wait to see how it will all work out

I have to agree with HyperStatic, only the most idiotic fanboy (redundant, I know) would think Final Fantasy is a Sony franchise. Regardless, I've never been interested in the franchise and the above revelations have erased what little curiosity I had.

Everyone b-ed and complained about Final Fantasy XII and said it was a mess. Guess what that game had? Huge open spaces, lots of weapons, and lots of mini-games. If you complain about a game that has all of that, what are you left with? Final Fantasy XIII, and I think it's pretty effing awesome

1. Personally I don't care if there's towns or not. I never cared for them much before and I'm not starting now.
2. I'm often a linear type of player so this doesn't bother me much.
3. I sucked at blitzball too so I welcome this change, lol.
4. Honestly this might be the only change that I don't like. Then again, I won't know for sure until I play this game. So for now I'll try to keep an open mind.
5. So what? With FF13 on the Xbox it means they get to enjoy a Final Fantasy game without having to get a different console. Let Xbox users enjoy the same game we Playstation users have enjoyed for years.

Number 5 on the list seems alittle hypocritical since the Final Fantasy series was a Nintendo exclusive back in the day. Personally I'm still on the fence with FF13 if I want it or not. I've gotten too used to rpgs like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Fallout Series, etc.
BONERJAM
No towns? Thats a huge disappointment. I wasn't overly excited about this game but this list pretty much killed it for me.
HyperStatic347
Last I checked, there were almost as many games (core or side-games) for Nintendo as there were for Playstation.
JDarkley
I couldn't care less if it is a system exclusive or not, and the linearity would probably give it some more mainstream appeal anyway.

I gotta say, I always loved getting my hands on new weapons and armor, and then checking them out in battle. That IS gonna suck. Especially if there are no ultimate weapons for each character. I remember searching and searching for one god-damn Blue Dragon in FFVIII, just so I could get Squall's Lionheart gunblade. Those days will be missed.
frank0127
So FF13 is extremely linear, has no towns to work your way outward from, has no armor, uses items to strengthen items, and generally changes everything that FF has been for the past umpteen games?
Console favortism aside, this just sounds like a bad game. So what if it looks good, it sounds like it tarnishes the entire franchise.
pumathehero
meh. wheres Kingdom Hearts 3?!
deedubya
thank GOD for no mini games. I sucked so hard at blitzball.
