Five Things You'll Hate About Final Fantasy XIII

Final Fantasy XIII

When Final Fantasy XIII hits the world, expect a lot of gamer-blowback. Whenever a developer take steps to modernize a beloved franchise, the gamer backlash is strong and ruthless. Fans of Fallout and Fallout 2 hated Fallout 3 because it updated the game world and made the franchise more "fun." Fans of Pac-Man couldn't deal with Ms. Pac-Man because she wore a bow. But even among devoted aficionado communities, few are as protective of "their" series as Final Fantasy fanatics. As you surely know, FFXIII comes out tomorrow for the 360 and the PlayStation 3, and it's going to piss a lot of people off.

X-Play reviewer Rob Manuel played the game for dozens and dozens of hours to provide G4's review. The game is definitely good – four out of five stars good -- but it still might make you very, very angry, particularly if you're a hardcore Final Fantasy fan. Rob's list below is only five of the countless ways FF XIII will leave players fuming:

1) No towns: There is not a single city in the game. There are no stopping places. No Inns. There are no hamlets, burgs or villages. This is a huge change from the previous open-world style FF action you’re used to --and a change from most RPGs, actually. In almost all previous Final Fantasy games going back to the ancient Final Fantasy 1 in the 1980s, you’d enter a homebase style town and work outward from their.

Which brings us to the second thing you’ll hate about Final Fantasy XIII...

2) It’s Very Linear: Final Fantasy XIII is not entirely on a track, but for the first 25 hours(!) or so, you’re going to be moving in a straight line, forward. This, of course, propels the action nicely, but doesn't appeal to gamers who like to feel like they're gaming in the "real" world with limitless possibilities and options. I guess those people can suffer through 25 hours of playing to get to the "good part."

Final Fantasy XIII

3) No mini-games: There are no arena battles, no Blitz-ball, no Card Battles, none of that stuff on the side that can be a nice break from the main plotline. With fans devoting themselves to minutia of past games' mini-games, this is a big, infuriating change.

4) Little equipment: You’re not going to find a huge variety of weapons in Final Fantasy XIII, and there is no armor at all, so if gearing up is your passion, you’re going to be hating on this game--There’s just not a lot of stuff to purchase. There are items that you can use to level up the weapons that you do have, but not a lot of weapon variety, another huge change from previous gear-heavy FF games.

Final Fantasy XIII Screens Are Fang-tastic

5) It’s on the 360: This is the first Final Fantasy game for the 360 so lucky number 13 is bound to anger console purists who feel that the Final Fantasy universe belongs only to Sony console owners.

Lest we be accused of always looking on the negative side of things, check back on Wednesday, where we'll detail the five things gamers will absolutely love about Final Fantasy XIII. And for more bile-inducing Final Fantasy anger, check back tomorrow when we'll have a side-by-side video comparison of the 360 and PS3 versions of the game for you to enjoy, dissect and argue over.

I'm sure there are more things you can think of that will anger FF fans. Leave them in our comment section.

If you're really a purist you should be mad that this game isn't on a Nintendo's Console.
Anyways who cares if it's on 2 consoles and not one, that's a stupid reason to be mad at the game, I mean you shouldn't limit the amount of people who can play the game and with this they'll sell more, in the end shut up and just play the game it's still on ps3 so there's really no problem. The only thing I can see as a complaint is the bundle being exclusive to Xbox (which I could be wrong about it being exclusive)

It's weird to not have towns, and I guess the linear thing might give me a FFX kinda feel while playing that I didn't quite like (although I loved the game), but I'm curious to see how it works out. I won't go all Fox News and rant about stuff I don't know about and I haven't tried myself. I actually support Square for not being afraid of their excessive fanboys and try different things to bring progress to their franchise and not just do a rinse repeat plus extra sparkles, because everyone knows it would still sell a lot if they did.

Lets do some math shall we. Sony has had VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2 (if you really wanted to call it a game), XII and war of the lions exclusively so they have 7 Final Fantasy games, Nintendo has has final fantasy 1-6, the remakes of those games. The Crystal Chronicles series, and the Tactics Advance series so thats means that Nintendo has 11 final fantasy games not including remakes.

About the Mini games i don't care. i mean i sucked at Blitzball.

About linearity when i first played seven i had no idea were to go once i got out of Midgar thankfully they had strategy guides other wise i never would have gotten omnislash

I hated stressing over having the money for all the equipment and always having to make sure i got every bodies equipment to the best it could be so i am not sad to see the equipment or the towns go and by the way there will be towns just not like the towns in the other games

Awesome. So you're telling me that five reasons the FF series stood out, and why I loved the series are now five items removed....dandy. In other words, it's overall a minimized version of XII... Square drops the soap yet again. Only this time, Bubba don't want none.

Final Fantasy has always been on Sony consoles! this is a travesty!

    Wait a second...
Nintendo has about twice as many FF games as Sony does, so I dont see why this being on xbox is supposed to make us angry. It's just an attempt to raise US sales, since the xbox fails hard in the Japanese market, but is big here (FPS's they drive the US game market, we love shooting each other). There hasnt been a decent regular RPG on a console for about a decade, so I wasnt expecting this to be one either.

FF hit its high point with 6 and 7, where there were tons of side quests, cool things to find and unlock, and in the case of 6, a ton of characters that were well developed with multitudes of armor and accessories, even some characters that were completely optional.

Someday a company will make a traditional RPG, with a big budget, and will be surprised at how much success it has, and things will come back to the way they always were. What square hasnt learned yet, is that for the most part RPG players dont care about fast paced gameplay and pretty graphics. Most of us just want a long engrossing story and lots of extras to make us feel special.

RPG gamers want a book on their TV screen. I have read Miles upon Miles of White text on a blue background and you know what? I loved every minute of it.

I'll play FFXIII, and I think I'll love it. Square tells good stories, and that's what really matters. I would prefer an item list longer than 3,000, I would prefer extra characters, I would prefer a little menu that pops up where I select my spell or click "fight", but I'll enjoy this too.

I believe the reason that square keeps moving this direction is the youth of today's gamer. It's the same reason megaman 10 has an "easy mode". The kids of today dont have the capability to play the long, difficult games of our youth. Two hours of grinding before a boss isnt what the kids like these days, they like to just keep on trucking through the story.

For people who like the endless amounts of armor, useless items, and pointless quests, there are two choices; Keep waiting, like I am. Or play World of Warcraft.

Meh I just don't get why is this series really reguarded the be all end all of JRPGs.Not that I don't hate the series but I do think this has become the Halo of its genre.I also have kind of lost interest after x but I do have my favorates of the series such as IV,VI,and IX.To me theres soooo much more in terms of JRPGs and having the changes happen in 13 is a total I could care less. Now Dragon Quest X is the one I'll more likely go crazy about.

Actually, Final Fantasy XIII is only the first Final Fantasy to be release simulaniously on two consoles. Final Fantasy XI was on XBOX 360 as well.

I think that this is a smart move from Square. Though I am a huge fan of the series I actually like the way that it is more linear. You get a chance to really enjoy the story for what it is. It takes along time for someone to go through a Final Fantasy game to get everything that they have to offer. I am excited and definitely eager for tonight's midnight release of it I will be on all nite.

I'm buying because I've bought every other Final Fantasy but I'm thinking I am going to be disappointed cause every one of those points you bring up are all points that I use to like about the series.

We need FF to be like FF6. Need more than just a party of 3 characters. Party should be 4 or 5, cos it means more utilization strategy during battle (balance between magic and physical and healer, etc). Equipment and gears are important. And dungeons need to be solved. not just straight line... Man... FF nowadays too focused on graphics and drawing cute girls... Disappointing.

If the game is really linear, and it takes 25 hours to just get to the good part, than at least that means the game is really long. I don't like paying $60.00 for games that I can 1000g in under a few hours.

    This one gets me.

"5) It s on the 360: This is the first Final Fantasy game for the 360 so lucky number 13 is bound to anger console purists who feel that the Final Fantasy universe belongs only to Sony console owners."

If there are FF fanatics who argue about this, then no doubt they came in at FF7 as their first FF game.

FF hasn't stuck to any system exclusively if you look back on its history and realize Nintendo enjoyed it as much as the Playstation.

I'll watch a friend who'll buy it first and see if I'll add it to my collection of games, but for once, an FF isn't an automatic buy-in for me.
