When Final Fantasy XIII hits the world, expect a lot of gamer-blowback. Whenever a developer take steps to modernize a beloved franchise, the gamer backlash is strong and ruthless. Fans of Fallout and Fallout 2 hated Fallout 3 because it updated the game world and made the franchise more "fun." Fans of Pac-Man couldn't deal with Ms. Pac-Man because she wore a bow. But even among devoted aficionado communities, few are as protective of "their" series as Final Fantasy fanatics. As you surely know, FFXIII comes out tomorrow for the 360 and the PlayStation 3, and it's going to piss a lot of people off.
X-Play reviewer Rob Manuel played the game for dozens and dozens of hours to provide G4's review. The game is definitely good – four out of five stars good -- but it still might make you very, very angry, particularly if you're a hardcore Final Fantasy fan. Rob's list below is only five of the countless ways FF XIII will leave players fuming:
1) No towns: There is not a single city in the game. There are no stopping places. No Inns. There are no hamlets, burgs or villages. This is a huge change from the previous open-world style FF action you’re used to --and a change from most RPGs, actually. In almost all previous Final Fantasy games going back to the ancient Final Fantasy 1 in the 1980s, you’d enter a homebase style town and work outward from their.
Which brings us to the second thing you’ll hate about Final Fantasy XIII...
2) It’s Very Linear: Final Fantasy XIII is not entirely on a track, but for the first 25 hours(!) or so, you’re going to be moving in a straight line, forward. This, of course, propels the action nicely, but doesn't appeal to gamers who like to feel like they're gaming in the "real" world with limitless possibilities and options. I guess those people can suffer through 25 hours of playing to get to the "good part."

3) No mini-games: There are no arena battles, no Blitz-ball, no Card Battles, none of that stuff on the side that can be a nice break from the main plotline. With fans devoting themselves to minutia of past games' mini-games, this is a big, infuriating change.
4) Little equipment: You’re not going to find a huge variety of weapons in Final Fantasy XIII, and there is no armor at all, so if gearing up is your passion, you’re going to be hating on this game--There’s just not a lot of stuff to purchase. There are items that you can use to level up the weapons that you do have, but not a lot of weapon variety, another huge change from previous gear-heavy FF games.

5) It’s on the 360: This is the first Final Fantasy game for the 360 so lucky number 13 is bound to anger console purists who feel that the Final Fantasy universe belongs only to Sony console owners.
Lest we be accused of always looking on the negative side of things, check back on Wednesday, where we'll detail the five things gamers will absolutely love about Final Fantasy XIII. And for more bile-inducing Final Fantasy anger, check back tomorrow when we'll have a side-by-side video comparison of the 360 and PS3 versions of the game for you to enjoy, dissect and argue over.
I'm sure there are more things you can think of that will anger FF fans. Leave them in our comment section.

Okkkkk............ now I know time has passed but i descided to play FF 13 again. There is a reason because the game is incredible doing the missions exploring Grand Puls. The person that made this artical is obviously stuck in the passed. Square Enix probaly did this game the way it is to see what to change and personally I love the game. 13 is the first FF game I actually got to play and when I started the game a second time I looked up some cheats and discovered this "Top 5 things that will make you angry about FF13" I had to see what wack job could possibly say something like that about such a great game! Dont worry people 13-2 wont be dissapointing I already know.

yes yes...thank u for this big malky..u r 100percent correct sir in almost everything..well spoken

Oh, and yes. I'm 50 hours in and have experienced Grand Pulse.
Still not amused.

Ok, there seems to be gamers who are new to the series or don't have the love for Final Fantasy like many older gamers who have played since the days of the SNES.
I'm a gamer over 30. I'm an RPG fan. I own all three mainstream consoles and love certain games for each.
Final Fantasy XIII has been dumbed down and prettied up for the new generation of gameplayers. For some reason, you have less attention span and more materialistic views of what games should be. FFXIII is nothing more than a forward scrolling beat em up with RPG-lite elements.
I don't give a crap about how good it looks on a system, I want it to play like a Final Fantasy and it doesn't. It's for the mentally challenged achievment and trophy gatherers who need a quick fix and then move on to something else.
As for the 1-5.
1. Towns make FF games. It gives us something to break the monotiny of constant battles, some interaction with others outside of the team and some amusement in side quests and mini-games. Without these, it is not FF.
2. RPG's never mind FF are very rarely linear to the point that XIII is. You usually get a few hours leading you along to teach you the workings of the game, then it let's you find your own path. Usually by going to towns and gathering intel. It does not push you through 50-75% of the game while taking away your enjoyment. Without free-roaming and exploration, it is not FF.
3. Mini games were huge in other Final Fantasy games. Tetra Master, Blitzball, Chocobo Breeding and Racing and even skipping in IX. They were fun and time consuming if you got into them. They may not be missed as much as other things but ultimately, without them, it is not FF.
4. I want to hunt a rare monster to get a component for a multi-faceted jewel of a weapon that does over 9999hp damage after an upgrade. I want to be able to steal it with an accessory I got from a huge &%@*"! of a boss that gives me the chance to pinch that component with 30% chance. I want armour, i want weapons, I want rare items and the chance to combine them to make even rarer ones. Without them, it is not FF.
5. Yes this is going to be a flamefest as usual. On the the PS3 using the full potential of the blu-ray, FFXIII could have been so much more. No, I'm not going on about how good this console looks to that, that's just petty, childish, 'fanboy' behaviour that seems to have gripped this generation of console gaming. With the amount of information that a Blu-ray can store, you could probably have a few towns, a better battle system and a better inventory added without having to add extra discs. Yes Square might have not had that idea for the game to start with but it's realistic. FFXIII was dumbed down so they didn't have to put a game spanning 7-8 discs as it would be costly for both the discs and the packaging and even the programming by trying to make an immense, enjoyable game on multiple platforms. You won't admit it if you do take it to the extreme with the Microsoft love, but it's true and you can deny it by words, but deep in your soul, you know it's true. With everything Square-Enix had to restrict it from being FFXIII, this is not FF.
Now, I have a 6th and 7th item to put forward:
6. The Battle System is not a battle system. It pertains to hitting libra and casting auto-battle most of the time because there is no chance to set the ATB to wait, giving it a less pliable system to work with. It's star rating reeks of western action games. I don't want to be timed on how quickly I finish a fight. I hate timed parts of games unless they're purely needed (like a bomb section in a game with a timed event to escape the area). I want my tactics to be rewarded for fighting correctly and carefully. Yes, I understand that this is the point of getting through a fight in FFXIII as quickly as possible, but it kills the intensity and cerebral integrity of it all. This is a huge killer of FF and it also gets rid of the usual thief role in the series that is a fan favourite. It's also annoying that you can't choose what your buddies do and are limited to again, Libra and auto attack. This is not FF.
7. Levelling and crystosis. Pointless. You don't really level up, the crystal grids are as linear as the gameplay and it offers nothing new to the series. SE were always good at upgrading their levelling system to be new and innovative. Again, they have dumbed it down for the casual, new generation gamers who don't have the time or mental capacity to put a half hour into making the characters yours. This is not FF.
To those who love it, well done, you either don't regard Final Fantasy as seriously as I, you don't care because you are getting a new game next week or you have the memory capacity of a goldfish and don't have time for games that should take a year to 18 months to complete 100%.
You are not a real FF player. You are a casual gamer and with this, SE will continue to deliver games that do not have the flair of those past.
It has good graphics and immense cut-scenes, yes. It can be enjoyable in parts. But where has the gameplay gone?
Final Fantasy is dead.
LordBlackass
I haven't found any of those 5 points to be a reason to hate this game. In fact, at the 22 hour mark the only thing I've found mildly annoying is the Hope character.
Is there a corresponding list detailing the 'Five Things You'll Love About Final Fantasy XIII'?

1. No towns is not a bad thing. They streamlined the purchasing process and made it much easier to purchase items through their abundant save point system, unlocking better shops as the game progressed. They basically took the middle-man out of the equation, a big plus in my book.
2. Though it is linear, the action makes that first 20hrs go by quickly. Furthermore, I would hardly call the first 20hrs "the bad part".
3. No stupid pointless mini-games? Such a tragedy. I wish could waste hour after hour breeding another gold chocobo, or playing a lame card-game...
4. The fact that there isn't a ton of equipment is another good thing. There were a lot of items in previous Final Fantasy games that just piled up in the inventory, and was eventually sold off. Not to mention the depth that the weapon/accessory upgrade system in 13 offers. There's plenty to be done with it.
5. Really you're going to make a point about it being on the 360? Where have you been? Have you forgotten that the game was originally solely on Nintendo? How dare a company diversify!! They obviously don't deserve the right to reach a much broader audience.
I get the feeling that the guy who wrote this article doesn't know his arse from his elbow. Think before you speak, jackass.

the fact there are no towns or minigames is a big deal to ff fans..i highly enjoyed taking a break and capturing monsters to then build a big badass custom monster to fight..searching for hidden weapons and doing sidequests to get special items is what i though ff was about..the game is pretty awesome graphic wise and original but should not have left out what made it popular in the first place..cant believe there are no minigames at least..i will not be buying another squareenix game but rent them..they still end up getting my money so i guess they still win..square-u need to start listening to ur gamers and re-check ur money vault as to what gamers have liked..i give it a 3

I actually see nothing completely wrong with any of those. The first two will be a little bit of a bother, but only for purist fans of the series. Any fan of video games that plays the large spectrum of games like I do will probably not care about that at all since most big games these days are linear like that ( like Uncharted 2 and lots of other shooters and action adventure games) we probably won't care, even though it is an RPG trademark. It will be a minor nit-pick in an other-wise fine idea. Honestly, I'm happy about number 3. Mini-games can be fun, but I've always had an issue with the mini-games of VII and X (sadly the only ones I've played). They made the games extremely hard when you are a completionist like me and are trying to get a character's ultimate weapon or something of the like. Really, I think the game will be fine since I'm not a purist of anything. It's them that will be the issue.
lilhotdude1313
You forgot the Eidolon Battles, timed battles in which you need to battle an enemy using specific moves to fill up a bar while hoping it doesn't kill you so you can eventually claim them as a summon. These battles can't be skipped and are PAINFULLY ANNOYING!

I have played and 100% completed every FF game there is to date except 12 and quite simply love 13! It is fun and action packed and has a pretty well written story and the voice acting is above par. Vanille's voice is annoying and Hope is a winey baby, but who cares! ITS FUN!!! Every FF is a new world (except X-2 and the upgrade systems are pretty standard these days) and each should not be compared to another FF or another game to determine if it is "good enough". That's just dumb. Of course it isn't the same old thing every JRPG usually does and has in it! It shouldn't be like every other game you are familiar with, ITS NEW! Square is obviously updating and upgrading the games and trying new things! Kudos to them for having the stones to do so knowing there will be people that gripe about it...

So where's the "5 Things You'll Love" article?
rpggrrl
I am deeply saddened that I waited all this time for this game to come out, only to see that they sacrificed all the good things about FF for faster combat and linear style gaming. I wouldn't mind that if the combat was more advanced, but it isn't. Its the same old gaming style minus control over your players, and your own moves! Leveling up is non-existant, and I find myself just pushing x and "paradigm" shifting so that the game can basically play the game for me. When you are not battling, you have to deal with 5-10 min cut scenes after almost EVERY battle. And where is the ability to use magic?? Why can the AI use magic and not me?? WTF. On another review the guy called the combat "elegant".. I don't see that here. I see boring one dimentional play, extremely easy to a fault. What is the point of pushing x for25 hours? I can't even get to the 25th hour mark it is too boring and repetitive. I have never played such a boring one dimentional game in my life. I would play FF12 any day over this horrendous beast of a "game"

I freaking love the game, but i agree with all the points made here. too much time speant on realism and not enough on content.

If anyone has a problem with Final Fantasy XIII, I suggest playing Demon's Souls! =D

I'm tired of watchin pretty cartoons while waiting to play a game. The best thing to ever come from Square was FF Tactics...That was a great game no pretty packagin or mini-movies just good gaming.

Okay this is the worst "5 things you'll hear about _____" I've ever read. All of these things aren't bad in fact I bought this game at midnight launch and have been loving every second of it. Its awesome. I've played plently of Final Fantasy before but XIII does its just amazingly I prefer this system over past ones as well
SoulDrifter1
I received my copy off FFXIII and CE guide yesterday afternoon and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I love the character development and I like the characters themselves. Especially Vanille. I love her accent. Hope and Snow seem very good as well. I Have yet to meet Fang. Lightning just plain rocks. And Sazh is damn cool. All the bad things I was expecting so far have been thrown out the window.
So those that were worried about the game, some of you can rest easy. I thought I was going to hate the battle system, but I am in love with it. It's not the system I was originally hoping for. I wanted a more developed turn based system, but taking control of one character during battle isn't all bad. It fits.
SheoDagana
I really don't like that there's no town... I always loved going to new towns, getting the backstory on said town, finding quests and loot in the towns... now all that's just gone. Towns were also a great milestone in the game. FFX was pretty linear but at least it had towns.
They also didn't mention the lack of grind. Crystarium's don't give you access to the next layer until certain plot points. Surely you can grind for crystal points, but it's all pretty cheap anyway. It seems like they didn't want to slow you down.
bigcj92
1,2,and 5 are minor but no mini game!!!! come on man!!! when square enix going 2 bring back bliz ball that was the best mini game ever n a video game i played 100s of bliz ball games n ff X sometime i will only play bliz ball instead of the real game it self. bring back BLIZ BALL!!!!!!

Why this was an absolutely awesome post:
I don't play RPGs anymore (time problems mostly) but my wife is obsessed with them. We almost didn't get the PS3 because it had so few. But there is one very specific reason she loves them...inventory. She loves items, collecting armor, trying to figure out what works best on who, etc. She loves this so much that I can spend whatever I want on games as long as it has inventories and equipping. As far as JRPGs, she finds the stories to be trite, the characters 2-D, even the combat is meh (though addictive). Graphics are graphics, they don't sell a game on either of us.
This was the best review of a game I've read in a long time, because I can know for certain she won't like it, though it may very well deserve its high score. This is why scores are just for a quick glance. Thanks G4, don't listen to the fanboys and the haters. Please do this again.
