Portal 2 Revealed

Valve has officially announced Portal 2. It will be coming out this holiday season.

The next issue of Game Informer magazine will feature an in-depth story on eagerly awaited sequel Portal 2, and the cover features the screenshots you see above. Gaze in wide-eyed wonder at the blue and orange portal beauty!

Unlike Portal, Portal 2 is a full-fledged, standalone sequel that will feature "new gameplay mechanics, storyline, and some surprising new twists."

Right now, that and some ASCII images from an awesome scavenger hunt is all the Portal 2 news we have, but the full-scale announcement is expected at GDC 2010, so watch G4's GDC headquarters next week for news.

What do you think of Portal as a "full scale" game? Will the puzzle mechanics of the first game be enough to keep your interest, or will Portal 2 need to change things up? Maybe with some actual combat? I hope not, because I love the purity of the first title, but I'm open to anything -- Valve is very good at making great games!

    Sweeeet.

Portal [2] as a full scale game is alright, as long as they find a way to keep it from dragging, I'm all good.

IMO, Portal is in it's own league & the 1st of it's kind (1st-Person Puzzle "shooter"), so the developers shouldn't have to worry about any pressure of adding more fluff just to keep things interesting - the game just has to stay true to it's original identity.

And I may be a purist, but I hope that Portal 2 comes with a disc, or (free) DLC code, for Portal 1; that way I can have both games in one case, and I can have Portal on it's own.
'Cause I never liked the fact that Team Fortress 2, Portal, & Half Life 2 all came in one disc on the Orange Box.
Half Life 2 [ep 2] never got my interest the way Team Fortress 2 did; with Team Fortress 2, there really wasn't much of a story for me to have to catch up on, like with Half Life.

I don't think combat would fit this game too well unless it involves using the portals to manipulate turrets/objects
Actual guns would probably be the worst thing they could do to this game- it'd turn it into Half Life

You guys are to worried. "Will this game be as good as the first?" You guys gotta have some trust in Valve. They know what their fans want and how to give it to them.

I say that the Portal gun can be upgraded so that you can grow the size of the portal so you can start from dropping little objects through it to eventually tanks or something like that.

I never played Portal, but I've heard it's good and to me, it looks really cool. I'll probably get this one to try it out...

I bet it will only be for xbox 360 and pc like all of valves other games unless it eventually gets ported like the orange box.

Will this also be infected with Steam? If so then I'm not touching it, the malware is the reason I never played the first one. Valve has SO gone downhill since the original HL.

Very excited for this. I could see combat working to some extent. I would have loved to take the portal gun out into the world as teased at the end of the game. It looks like those screens are teasing some varied enviornments which i would be excited to see.

even if it was all in-lab i would still be excited though as long as they bring some new ideas. can't wait.

I'm thinking that, since I sunk probably close to 40 hours into the first Portal (I'm not totally dumb, just played it over and over), it was a "full scale game" for me. I'm not sure how I feel about combat in the game. The artillery range was my least favorite area. But, whatever Valve decides to do with it, I'll probably eat it up.

I just hope that this doesn't make me so nauseous after playing for an hour. I had the same problem with Half-Life 2 and I eventually just gave up trying to complete the game.
