For nostalgia's sake, I was playing Doom 2 last night on my 360. That game hearkens back to a day when games were hard. There's much less hand-holding in Doom and Doom 2 than in modern games. I like that.... until I get completely stuck. Then I hate it.
But I LOVE the BFG 9000. First, it has the funniest name of any video game gun, and secondly, Doom gives you just the right firepower at the right time in game. There's something downright satisfying about the blob of luminescent green death that shoots from the BFG. So this post is a tribute to the BFG 9000. What's your favorite game gun and why?

According to yahtzee's review of Painkiller there is a gun that shoots shurikens and lightening, but I've never played it so I'll go with the gravity gun from HL2. Killing people with toilets never gets old.

Best weapon ever: The Cerebral Bore from Turock 2, nothing beat ppl running for their lives when they heard its odd whistling sound coming from them on multiplayer, and the satisfying crunch if they were too slow to evade it

The fusion cannon and the particle accelerator from Turok were freaking sweet. The farsight from Perfect Dark was awesome. The Rhino 4-Ever in Ratchet & Clank. There are far too many to choose from. The fusion cannon and its huge shockwave that knocked over trees or the ridiculousness of the particler accelerator still top them all though.

To me a great gun is the one that is useful in a large amounts of situations for the missions. Shotguns are my best friend when I'm cleaning house. Assault Rifles and Machine Guns when things get more open.
The only gun that I loved carrying from my old games is the Silver PPK from Goldeneye, call me crazy but I rather shoot two bullets through a door and kill the guy, instead of opening the door and hope I pull my one shot off before the guy behind it could pump me full of lead. Even better holding two of them.

have to say gravity gun from Half Life 2 as well, but HL2 also has my 2nd favorite gun which is the Pulse Rifle. Something about the sound it makes is just so perfect and so satisfying.

Resident Evil 2 Shotty. I was playing the demo for it once upon a time, and right after I had picked it up, a zombie came from behind. I blasted it at point blank range, it fell to the floor, and the TORSO (sans legs) proceeded to creep towards me until I pumped it again.

My most recent favorite gun is the Collector Particle Beam Heavy Weapon from Mass Effect 2. It kicked ass.

the land shark gun from armed and dangerous. it was a gun that shoots a shark into the ground. the shark swims through the ground to emerge below enemies and eat them. it was awesome.that was the funniest game i ever played. it was made by lucas arts with plenty of starwars references.
also the zerp point gravity gun from half life 2 i nearly always had that weapon equipped it was so much fun.

Im going to go with the Rock-it Launcher from fallout 3. The rock-it Launcher + Bloody Mess perk = great fun!!!!
Second i'd have to say the good ol' gravity gun from the half life 2 series. That gun has saved me from death more than i can count, and who doesnt want to kill zombies by shooting saw blades at em!

You can't make a valid best gun argument without discussing Ratchet and Clank: The RYNOs, Morp Guns, Suck Cannon, Visibomb, Lava Gun, Bouncer, Plasma Whip, Mr. Zurkon. Not to mention the guns often evolve to completely different forms. They have so many guns I'm sure I missed a few greats, and I'm sure my list is far different than other peoples favorites.
Resistance also has a lot of more 'realistic' bleedover, like the Bullseye and Auger. Fallout's Rock-it Launcher was hilarious, and the Plasma Cutter and Line Gun from Dead Space were pretty awesome.
