There will not be an NHL 2K11 on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. Take-Two Interactive revealed it would be taking a year off from developing an NHL product on both those platforms this year.
"We're committed to competing and winning," said Take-Two CEO Ben Feder during a question and answer session with analysts discussing the company's first quarter fiscal 2010 results.
Take-Two clarified that it will still develop an NHL release for the Wii to be released this year, but Electronic Arts will have complete control over the market on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
"We think as a result of that [extra development time] the following year we'll just come back a lot stronger," said Feder.

This debate goes all the way back to 2000. Thats when NHL 2k brand first appeared. I've been playing EA hockey since 93-94 on the Genesis, and EA was really in control of Video Game hockey until NHL 2K3. That year, the game NHL 2k series put out was completely phenominal! The appearance, gameplay, AI, and overall fun level of NHL 2K3 was not met again until around 2008. After NHL 2K3 changed everyones vision of videogaming hockey with quite possibly the "Greatest" puck control and Deke options available at the time, EA from that point got "scared" and took alot of time off to work on the EA series if you recall.. Thats why EA took the back seat for a few years, they realized that 2K3 touched on soemthing and felt they needed to start "revamping" their game too. What happened was that EA hockey and the 2K series traded off winners from about 2006-2009, and traded off again in 2010 with 2k10 being a lackluster game.
The 2K series knows it didn't failed to capture the fans this year, and will respectively take some time to regroup. But I don't really see the EA vs 2k matchup chaning anytime in the near future. Unless EA went out of business.

Why didnt Take Two take a year (or 3) off their MLB 2k series?

EA's Hockey Games are absolute garbage. They're complete ARCADE game experiences. Where they succeed is with Instant Gratification. Even the most foolish of fools can score a goal in the EA titles. They're laden with glitches and exploits that people repeat 50 times a game to score goals.
NHL 2k10 is far superior in its gameplay and its ability to bring to life a far more realistic Hockey experience. . I'm sorry to hear there won't be an NHL 2k11.

Translation: NHL 11 will be a pucking pile of suck!

I played the Wii version and loved it. I don't own a 360 or PS3 and the 2k series was my only option. I hope at least for this year that they don't get complacent as it is their only version and that it is still a good if not great game on Wii.

IMO this is how all sports games should be. Bi-yearly releases. There just isn't enough time from when they stop supporting last year's game to when the next year's game releases for them to really do anything meaningful. And if they DO do something meaningful (like rebuild the game) it's littered with bugs that they have to spend the next 2 years cleaning up.
Hopefully they'll still do roster updates.

This is both good and bad news. It gives the go-ahead (or stay-the-same?) to EA to not make many innovations in NHL11 because of their monopoly on the hockey game market, which means a stale year.
Then again, I was impressed with some of the innovations that NHL2K games have had over the years. There is more originality and chances taken by NHL2K, and I'd like to move over to that franchise. Perhaps this year off will mean that their return will spell something far superior to the EA game. I'm hoping.
So to my chagrin I'm stuck with the EA series for now, and seemingly another year longer. My friends are all consumers of the EA product and to play with them, I've followed suit. A returning reinvigoration of 2K could possibly sway them. I'm hoping.
Sidenote: today was trade deadline day in the NHL, which makes it the best day of the year. This news is very appropriately timed.

EA's NHL games are far superior to 2K's. That being said, EA should consider taking a year off from NBA Live to try and catch up with 2K.

Good for them, spend the time developing a kick-balls NHL game. EA games are so stale.
