Disclaimer: It should be noted that this week's Soapbox was shot at 11am on Monday, March 1st before we knew the glitch would be fixed or repair itself later in the day.
That being said, Adam didn't see the Great PS3 Glitch of March, 2010 as a sign of Sony's problems, but a sign of problems that could possibly touch the industry as a whole. Do we want to trust our ability to game to some remote server located in who knows where? Are we sure the internet age isn't making out games less reliable because of their reliance on being connected? You decide.

Another reason to say HELL NO to Digital Distribution!!
thanks Adam

Pause the video at 18 seconds in and you'll see just how giant and square Adam's head is. He looks like a feeble Kronos.

Very smart Soapbox as usual. Thanks for not turning this discussion into fanboyism Adam and looking at the whole scope of the potential problem.
It is nice to show others how good or how average (in my case) you are at playing games with trophies and achievements.
I have not checked if I still have my trophies. Regardless, playing games and just have fun should be more important than gaining notoriety.

This is actually something I've thought about in the past. I mean, yes, to download titles could mean a huge save in the materials used to make games (no cases, discs, etc) and therefore possibly making them cheaper for the consumer, but can they truly be relied upon? Think of the notion of a hard drive failure, something goes wrong and everything you have on there, saves, games, etc are just gone in an instant. With a disc, cartridge, or whatever those PSP half-breed things are, we are guaranteed to at least "have" the game, and even this may not hold completely true, as there are a slew of things that can go wrong there, but at least it is more concrete. I still wonder which would be better, and yes, there are records online that help keep track of what you have at least purchased, but... are we really just putting faith in a faceless marvel?

Sessler is awesome, but I have to wonder if he's going for the Hasselhoff look or Tony Montana look. One less button would be The Situation

I imagine the likelyhood of a disc fatally scratching is far greater than a network failing.

Im calling Shennanigans on this one! M$oft paid Sess off to film this today and act like he filmed it yesterday, just to get some jabs off at Sony...says the clinically retarded fan boy! No but seriously, I can go a day without my PS3FAT and im glad it didnt brick, because I have the first iteration with 4 USB ports and I can play PS1 & PS2 games, and I dont want that skinny-no-fat-having-tiny-cant -be-playin-old-games PS3*slim

You know what Adam, I am really happy you decided to say what you said because I've been saying it all along. I've written about it on G4 numerous times and now with the PS3 glitch, it's finally getting some real attention.
I'm definitely an old school gamer and I began noticing the uncertainty of todays gaming technologies and their seemingly blind dependency on hard drive space and internet connectivity. If it's made by human hands, there is ALWAYS the chance of it being inherently flawed to some capacity and we all have been WAY to quick to embrace these technologies without questioning or really thinking about the risks involved in doing so. The fact that the industry and gamers alike have even CONSIDERED the possibility of DOWNLOAD ONLY model is pretty disconcerting to say the least. Do you really want your games in the hands of a machine? Or do you want it in YOUR OWN capable hands?
As the stakes get bigger as they have been the potential for catastrophic losses increases exponentially and that's something that EVERYONE should be mindful of. And as great as all this recent innovation has been to us and gaming in general, it has always seemed to me like the tech is starting to get too big for it's britches.

I don't know. I think it is an important point that all of this interconnectedness has given us some pretty awesome features and added some pretty cool things to the gaming experience. I agree that there are some troubling things on the horizon, but i don't take much away from this PS3 outage other than it highlights just how reliable the PSN has been thusfar. This was a hardware glitch anyway and not really a PSN outage.

Whoa there Adam, you can't just go throwing phrases like higgledy-piggledy out there all willy-nilly... Gee Willikers!

OnLive scares me. Not because its different but because its online only. You don't buy the game anymore, you only buy a privilege to play it and if oops your hard drive glitches or something all your privileges tunr to crap because all of them were kept in a digital medium rather than your right to play these games being in a stable existing medium such as a disk or a contract. Digital Distribution is a scary prospect that I really hope just doesn't happen because it will diminish our rights. If something like this happens during something like OnLive and your data get corrupted do you really think that a company like Microsoft (I love Xbox but) would help you get your crap back? No. They wouldn't.

Holy Hell Sess, I havent used my dictionary this much in ages. Well played sir.

Adam, I don't really know what the hell your talking that has something to do with PS3, problem.. But the topic your talking about the Trophies and Achievements point it's all about competition.. It's Pissing contest, to see who's the better player.. Back to 87' Nintendo, you just had to believe that your friends beat the games before you.. Now you can see if they did or not.. The Technology is there, to make things easier as downloading games on the internet.. But you always have other people trying to exploit it to ruin the fun of others..

This has been my argument against OnLive, as well as Netflix, and all the other "streaming" services that many on G4 think will take over. If the PS3 glitch is any sort of sign, it's a sign of this: tangible media will never be replaced.
Personally, I would pay more for a disc than a download. So far, most consumers would. This excess cost merely for a disc is pure revenue for the publisher and issues like these will continue to drive the cost of intangible media lower and lower as reliability becomes a considerable concern. What if my data becomes corrupted? What if I'm not online when I want to play?

wouldn't be suprised if sessler did an emergency soapbox with what is happening with iw

i still trust sony more than microsoft, as i just got the red rings

I loved the two games being played in the background this week

Finally someone important points this out. This has hindered games for some time. Publishers release games with known bugs assuming that they'll patch them after launch since most consoles are connected (I know people who don't use XBOX Live and don't have their 360s connected to receive any updates). Online verification is not something that should ever be required to play a game if it's not necessary. Simple as that. It takes value from the game.

sony and microsoft dont want a bad reputation and knowing how they have been very consistant in the past with high quality online play. one problem doesnt mean they have messed up .this will happen and i dont see it as a major problem except for those people who are extremely obsessed with gaming and dont know when to relax and wait for the problem to be fixed.
