Sessler's Soapbox: Is the PS3 Glitch a Sign of Things to Come?

Disclaimer: It should be noted that this week's Soapbox was shot at 11am on Monday, March 1st before we knew the glitch would be fixed or repair itself later in the day.

That being said, Adam didn't see the Great PS3 Glitch of March, 2010 as a sign of Sony's problems, but a sign of problems that could possibly touch the industry as a whole. Do we want to trust our ability to game to some remote server located in who knows where? Are we sure the internet age isn't making out games less reliable because of their reliance on being connected? You decide.

I find it funny and utterly ridiculous that as soon as that glitch hit Xbox 360 fanboys jumped on it like a group of hungry spotted hyenas on a dead carcass. I just love how articles from all the various fanboys websites (obviously in desperate need of hits) started comparing this glitch to the RROD the 360 suffers from when in truth this glitch pales against the RROD issue.
In the famous words of one french taunter:
"Go and boil your bottoms you sons of a silly person."

I understand Adam's thoughts here perfectly. I've always prefered to have the disc myself, knowing that it can't be lost from my hard drive. I also get rather annoyed when companies keep jamming new features into what is SUPPOSED TO BE my gaming console, not my all purpose watch tv, buy my clothes, cook my dinner type machine.

Of course this was a minor glitch in the system, but one that had large problems for people that enjoy tracking achievements. Makes me wonder if something bigger had suddenly bugged what would have happened.

I hope somebody has pointed out that this issue has nothing to do with the PS3's connectivity. It was a result of a programming error in the Playstation's internal clock meaning it could have just as easily happened to a PS2 or Gamecube, and it did happen to the Zune a while back.

I still buy CDs on occasion because it gives me a sense of nostalgia and comfort that I have something I can hold. I think a "the internet might be too dominant" soapbox has been long overdue and am kinda happy that it did happen. I remember playing orange box and checking out team fortress 2 for the first time and realized that it had no splitscreen which really pissed me off because I had no internet then. It felt like VALVe was mocking me for not having live, not being able to really play this game. Then I got over it and played some portal.

I have never been a big fan of DLC for this reason. For small updates, or small games, DLC is fine. But unless the game industry goes completely digital (which I hope will never happen), I can't see myself purchasing a brand new full game online for download. I want a physical copy of what I "own". I don't want to rely on the fact that I own it somewhere in cyberspace. Hell, I still don't download my music, I am the only person I know that still buys CDs for all of my music. I do rent movies on Netflix, but when it comes to owning a movie, I go out and buy the Blu-ray. I truly hope music, movies, and games NEVER go completely digital...

This is the main reason why I don't like direct streaming, of any kind. Having to rely on a net connection (or any "invisible"/software connection) to watch a movie, play a game, etc. is very...unsafe to me.

When I buy a game, I want to be able to hold the disc to touch it and know it's mine, to show the receipt as proof. With stuff like OnLive, you don't get that, which is why I'll never buy it.
I think the ability to hold the physical object (hard drive, book, disc, etc), and KNOW that it has whatever data, is something more than aesthetic appeal. It applies to a human instinct of comfort, "if I can see it, if I can touch it, it's real". I define "owning" downloads by pointing at my laptop/hard drive and saying "I own that, and I can touch it. Therefore the things I own on it are just as real".
Using that application, the Internet is basically the first virtual reality, and being "virtual reality" it's stability is based on foundations (computer servers) that anything could happen to at any time.

I'm not saying technology or the net is bad, I love it to death. I grew up with it. But I I just think that people (myself included) take it so much for granted that we don't really realize how quickly and heavily it's impacted our lives. And that in a flash, for whatever freak reason, if part (or all) of it shut down, we'd be thrown into a dark age. These effects we've already known by personal experience, when your connection is down, or something of the sort, you become so bored that you start gnawing your fingers. And that's not even considering what a hiccup in the stock market accounting would cause on the national/global economy.

    "Ghost in the Machine"
Telling reference to make there, Adam. No wonder you like your private gaming experience and prefer that separate from your public life.

The fall of Sony starts with a glitch? Regrettably not. . . It started with the insane price tag on release date. . . (please spare me your I smell fan boy garbage I owned a ps1 and have had many Nintendo systems, just so happens now I have an Xbox 360 with which I have no complaints about. I dislike Sony for reasons beyond this or that brand is better.) Though not even the price tag would scare everyone off. . . In any case all this talk about download only hasn t bothered me really and this is why, should something go wrong and I lose the saved data, I can always go back and download it again for free (since I already paid once). . . Or at least that is how it works on Xbox live, so its not the losing of the data that would be a problem. Though the thought of not having a disc to trade in if I felt like it is a little depressing. . . Anyway good soapbox look forward to tomorrows feedback.

Some times the rocket blows up on the launch pad, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't go into space. Same idea here, I think we are going to go to an all digital system and yes I do foresee some ominous event like this one but you have to break some eggs to make an omelet right.

You know what is funny? Sony is so reliable that a minor glitch is the trophy system is considered to be a breaking news. Ok, for some people is not that minor but, still, this is nothing serious. No biggy. But my friend david has glitches every now and then on his xbox 360 and he says it's normal...
My point is: who do you trust now?? I trust Sony.

Its interesting to think that we've finally reached the point of having this "Future Fear" of dependency on a high-tech network.

I've always thought that things would get to this point, but I didn't think it would come so soon, and in the bubble of the Gaming Industry, no less.

Lets hope these Gaming higher-ups are aware of this, and are somehow able to strike a balance between hard-copies (discs & et cetera) and virtual copies (digital downloads & et cetera), and find a way to back things up (for both), before our dependency on 'em goes out of hand & crosses the point of no return.
