Disclaimer: It should be noted that this week's Soapbox was shot at 11am on Monday, March 1st before we knew the glitch would be fixed or repair itself later in the day.
That being said, Adam didn't see the Great PS3 Glitch of March, 2010 as a sign of Sony's problems, but a sign of problems that could possibly touch the industry as a whole. Do we want to trust our ability to game to some remote server located in who knows where? Are we sure the internet age isn't making out games less reliable because of their reliance on being connected? You decide.

Yeah, the whole "dependence on an on line connection" thing has Always gotten on my nerves. Like downloading Ninja Gaiden Black on XBox 360 and having to restart several times due to corrupted saved files; or even the fact that I have to be on line to play a level that I [supposedly] downloaded for The Force Unleashed. What's a hard drive for?

It would be nice if developers didn't think online multiplayer made splitscreen obsolete.

I found a workaround. I suffered the Y2010 glitch while I was trying to play "Star Ocean: The Last Hope International". I couldn't play it because the game failed to download trophy information from PSNetwork (it failed at 14%, then told me I had to quit the game - no way around it).
Fix: unplug the network cable. It runs just fine when it has nothing to download from (and therefore doesn't try to download anything).
That's why I don't want games that require internet connections to play (like MMO's). I want to own, lock stock and barrel, any game I purchase, so that I can play it 50 years from now. Internet connectivity is never 100% guaranteed, and I don't want to have to rely on something I can't depend on.

Hopefully nothing happens again cause off-line games should be safe from online issues no matter what.

Adam, I completely agree with you on the "is it really ours/there?" topic. I like the idea of being able to download a game at my own leisure, but I'd much rather put a cartridge into my system after blowing all the dust out of it or even have a book in my hand that I could pick up in twenty years and read it the same way I had twenty years ago. I do not think the PS3 glitch was a very bad thing because: A. They fixed it immediately which, to me, shows they're reliable. B. How hard is it to go a couple of hours without gaming online? and C. Hasn't Microsoft had the same type of problem since it came out? How many times have they fixed it?
Buuuuuut this is your soapbox Adam, and a very good one lol.

Wasn't this a hardware glitch and not a PSN outage? Have like 100 other people said that already? Is anybody listening?

Okay, I have details regarding the atomic clock glitch, and what was exactly hosed. Everything that you downloaded, which are the themes, classic PS-X games, and PS3 games that you got directly from the PlayStation Store, but excluding game expansion packs like the ones from Borderlands, and whatever you have in PlayStation Home (the Salt Shooter game, for example), got corrupted because the licences you recieved when you bought the games and themes were no longer valid, so they got corrupted (mainly because the clock got reset to a point before you downloaded the stuff). And the PlayStation Network servers being down for maintainence didn't help matters any. All you had to do was delete the corrupt data and redownload what you orginally had when the network was sorted out (which was a pain in the ass where Final Fantasy VII was concerned; lord, was that a huge game to downlaod).
I think Adam was joking about using cartriges, but I understand his meaning. I don't mind haveing a game on a disk, be it on CD, DVD, or in the case of PS3, Blu-Ray. That way if anything gets corrupted, I could use the disks to reinsall the software. The problem with downloading anything from an online server is that if the server goes down permantly, you're most likely S. O. L..

I must say I laughed so hard when i first heard about this. :)

There are a few things I would like to say. and let me apologize in advance for my spelling at time, and by that I mean please add a spell checker.
#1 Digital distribution
I am against a full turnover to digital distribution. The main reason I am against this is if your HDD tanks on you it's a long and annoying process to regain your losses. Imagine if you had 20 full length games, very realistic. Now lets say they are 3 gb a piece or worse if it's a PS3 blue-ray if I want to play a game I don't want to wait for it to download. In addition to that many places throughout the US only have limited internet many areas mny get at best 1-3 MB if they have high speed at all. Also you cannot resell digital copies, although with a PS3 you can share it with 3-4 friends if you like, but I bet that would be disabled on full length games. Another point is marketing, in order to buy a game on PSN or LIVE you need money how is an eight year old going to get a CC or convince their parent\s to put that online, I would imagine they wouldn't. This makes me believe that they would have to contiune to sell they games at stores with download redemtions, but if you are doing that is it really an all digital media? You stil have to manufacture something and place it in stores. Also if all of these games are going digital the consoles are going to need a MASSIVE HDD upgrade, sony has that under control to a degree Microsoft not so much, but in the end Neither would end up having adequte space , again lets say you have 20 games that are 3 Gig you just ate up at least 70 GIG with the OS and proifles data and saves let alone patches and DLC again. The pro's just seem to be out weighed by the cons.
#2 The PS3 glith
Some people are comparing the RROD and the glitch on equal terms; I find this laughable. While it is true they are both over sights and noteworthy the RROD is by far a more devistating attack, You have to give up your console send it away and wait, and while I have been told the waiting time vaires between 1-2 weeks, any downtime is Microsofts fault and is unacceptable. Sony's glitch is also unacceptable but the resolution came within 24 hours and was more of an oops not a bloody death. To all those that lost trophies I feel your pain though.
#3 something

I don t want to technology to revert back to a cartridge but I appreciate the sense of ownership that came with that cartridge. So is there an in between?

ADAM. This is incredibly insightful and I have even more respect for you than ever.
I REALLY wish I could talk with you about the issue of downloading content and security in purchases... I have made startling and compelling observations. I won't call them evidential, however as observations go, these are plain sight once I break them down, and soon I will be badgering you to become acquainted with me, if only for the sake of gaming.

I don't like the fact of not having a disc to pop into my system.
It frustrates me, and it worries me. The disc is a physical thing you can hold and have possession over while downloading onto a hard drive or onto an account. There is always that part where it can mess up on it's way, or you lose your account password, etc etc. HAVING the disc is much more pleasing, just as with the new PSPGo, I love the design and everything about it except that I have to download my games onto a single hard drive or onto a SD card where I could lose it so easily.
Although, it seems we're getting to the stage of where it's the medium to having downloadable games, whether it be with the PSPGo or with the games on demand with Xbox LIVE or PSO and even the Nintendo Online Store for Wii. I don't like to see it going this way, the disc means I'll have it for a very long time. Considering I don't lose it. While a download could very well last a few weeks, depending on your hard drive's life span.. (Aside from Steam where it's forever on your account.)
