Morning Hangover #71 -- Andrew Looks For Feedback, Patrick Has TV Envy

So, how was your Monday?

We're only the second day into the work week, and we've already filled our show plan for tomorrow's episode of Feedback: yesterday's PlayStation 3 Leap Year Glitch that induced a mild panic, and of course, last night's bombshell that corporate shenanigans are occurring at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward (catch the original story on that here).

We're taping at 4:00 PM (Pacific Time) this afternoon, and we want to hear your questions and comments about both of these stories so we can incorporate them into the show. Pipe up in the comments below by 3:30 PM, and as always, try to have an avatar associated with your profile (it makes things easier for us).

With the recent release of the Starcraft 2 beta and the announcements involving the always connected to Battle Net functionality of the game, along with the Playstation 3 clock error that prevent internet connection, it seems that many games are now being required to have an internet connection to play. Even games with only a single player experience such as Heavy Rain are affected by the inability to connect to the internet. With future distrubtion of games heading towards an entirely digital market, will the future of games require the ability to connect to the internet, even with titles that in previous years would not have had internet functionality?

If microsoft had this problem last year and sony is had the problem yesterday how are they going to actually solve this problem instead of letting it blow over

Considering the allegations that Activision withheld royalties from Infinity Ward for Modern Warfare 2, what do you think the chances are that this will all spectacularly blow up in Activision's face?

As an aside, the way I see it there are 2 more likely scenarios, with the information we've got now (prior to Kotick's meeting with Infinity Ward employees).

Scenario 1: Royalties are withheld from Infinity Ward by Activision, Infinity Ward decides (possibly with the advice of their legal department) that Activision has breached their contract, so they can go elsewhere, so they go shopping around for a new publisher. Maybe Take Two, maybe Ubisoft, maybe Zenimax. Whoever they pick doesn't matter. Activision Management (including Kotick) catch wind of this, and decide to nip this in the bud by canning Zampella and West (or West and Zampella) in (as I've described it elsewhere), a corporate application of the Tarkin Doctrine.

Scenario 2: Infinity Ward has let things slip on occasion that Activision has been somewhat micro-managing them on the Call of Duty franchise (which they may see as their baby). Let's assume for a moment that Infinity Ward didn't agree with Activision about having future Modern Warfare games being subscription based (as Activisio n has suggested in the past). So, Infinity Ward starts quietly shopping themselves around for a new publisher when their contract expires in October. Possibly as a negotiating tactic so they can get better terms on the contract when they re-negotiate it. Possibly because IW management (like West and Zampella) are fed up with their treatment by Activision, and they want out. As with Scenario 1, Activision management catches wind, and heads end up rolling.

As a question as part of that aside, if either of those scenarios come to pass, is Infinity Ward's individual identity safe, or is it at risk of being absorbed into Activision proper as a way of quelling future rebellions?

Well lets hope the Halo: Reach multiplayer news Bungie has promised makes things seem brighter.

Does anyone remember Y2K? Well Y2K10 just happened, and caused more of a problem than Y2K ever did (everyone knows it didnt happen 10 years ago) because of a leapyear. Honestly I dont htink this will even be remembered for very long, just wait for God of War, and everyone will be playing theyr PS3's with no memory of the one day that it couldnt play games. The quetion is, is such an error even a thing to worry about tomorrow, or shoul we and developers of hardware and software be more conscious of the volatility of technology? Everyone and his brother's Xbox 360 has crashed at one point or another, and now its competitor has had not a local glitch, but a however temporary network crippling software failure. Will the industry try to become more aware of the simple things that can happen when hardware becomes so complex? Or is it even possible to prepare or predict such a thing?

This is all gonna blow up in activision's face. My theory is that IW wanted to do something different but Activision wanted MW3. Activision didn't want COD 4 but that turned out to be an Uber hit. They are also all about money and MW prints it.

Do you think activisions actions were a result of IW meeting with a different publisher.

Recently the PS3 has been picking up some steam, do you think that this "leap year glitch" will possibly hamper or slow down Sony's hustle?

With Battlefield: Bad Company 2 coming out, a rival FPS to Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2, and Activision's Bobby Kotick ruling the gaming market with an iron fist, do you guys think this Infinity Ward situation is in the same vein as what happened to Free Radical or could it be something along the lines as a publicity stunt to either announce Modern Warfare 2 DLC or announce something brand new? And what impact do you think this will have on the game market if they actually do dissolve the creators of one of the highest selling games ever?

What probably happened: PSN took a day off, Infinity Ward got Kotick'd.

What the Interwebs saw: Darth Kotick raised his "Leap Year" Deflector Shield in hopes of creating a smoke screen that would allow his dreadful deeds to go unnoticed. They weren't counting on Patrick "Scoop" Klepek, sporter of the Mighty Bro'Fro, weilder of truth in all it's forms, seeing through the deception with the Eyes of Thundara and sheding light to Kotick's evil, evil, evil machinations.

    The truth: Probably somewhere inbetween.

Of course we don't know exactly why the two studio heads at IW were fired, however I was curious what kind of affect you think this type of situation will have on future Developers when considering a partnership with Activision, if any?

Will the PS3 global "crisis" be a catastrophe, or will it just be a blip on the radar of technical difficulties?

I am currently more interested in how both the PS3 glitch and the incident and Infinity Ward will affect the fan base of both. I have always been very interested in the companies as much as I am interested in their games/products but I really don't believe many others pay as close attention to that as those of us reading G4tv (ie there are still so many people who think Rock Band was a rip-off of Guitar Hero). Both incidents caused me stop and think about the companies more as a company rather than their products but Sony was able to get everything fixed within 24 hours and the crew that is the back-bone of Infinite Ward is still at work and hopefully still working on providing the best content for us the fans.

People are blowing the PS3/PSN error a.k.a. apocalyPS3 way out of proportion. Some have gone through 5 different RROD experiences and are still playing on their Xbox 360s today. This will hardly effect a decrease in sales.

Is the PS3 glitch really comparable to the 360 red ring troubles? I mean i'm keeping my PS3 off for a while but it seems like people were really too quick to bash Sony. Also...clear rumors for me, is it safe to turn my PS3 back on? I mean a little more Dante's Inferno couldn't kill me (or could it?) but I'd like to get back to Heavy Rain.

I was always under the assumption that Infinity Ward was an independent developer that decided to stay with their COD franchise (a la Bungie and Halo).

Two short questions: What are your thoughts on Max Payne 3 and as Heavy Rain has been somewhat of a financial success do you think gamers are ready for more adult thought provoking titles?

What does the possible scandal at Infinity Ward mean for the next Modern Warfare game? They already got rid of the chief tech director, will there be more firings after these two? Does this mean that the next Modern Warfare game could falter under new staff replacements?
