Morning Hangover #71 -- Andrew Looks For Feedback, Patrick Has TV Envy

So, how was your Monday?

We're only the second day into the work week, and we've already filled our show plan for tomorrow's episode of Feedback: yesterday's PlayStation 3 Leap Year Glitch that induced a mild panic, and of course, last night's bombshell that corporate shenanigans are occurring at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward (catch the original story on that here).

We're taping at 4:00 PM (Pacific Time) this afternoon, and we want to hear your questions and comments about both of these stories so we can incorporate them into the show. Pipe up in the comments below by 3:30 PM, and as always, try to have an avatar associated with your profile (it makes things easier for us).

Why does the console breaking error on the PS3 garnish so much attention and in your face media blitz from the industry? The 360's myriad of RROD, E-74 and other general console issues just seem to be portrayed as a cooky old batman villain that just continually shakes his fist in anger then runs away.

What does this mean for Infinity Ward? It's a safe assumption to say that both Vince Zampella and Jason West leaving the studio will have a major impact.I'm woundering how deep the repercussions will sink into the industry?

Is it possible that this could be a blessing in disguise for Jason West andVince Zampella, since it seems that they haven't been happy with the way Activision has treated the Call of Duty franchise, and do you think that other developers will try to scoop up such great talent?

Can a game series like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. that is just so different from the "AAA" titles continue to grow? Because it seem while each new game released in the series is better than the last, with the recently released Call of Pripyat being very good and got a 4 out of 5. But the release of each game seems to more and more down-played or unnoticed. I guess what I'm saying is will we see a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 and can companies(like GSC Game World) with smaller budgets like this still compete in the gaming market when games like Fallout, Mass Effect 2, Call of Duty, and etc. can have the companies behind them throw millions behind "their AAA" games?

    PS3 glitch:
What exactly caused the PS3 glitch?
Do you think that this glitch was all that importaint it was only a day and they fixed it (I understand that some of you may have lost a day of work) their will always be glitches.

    Infinity ward:
Will they really kill CoD because if you've seen activisons line up and they need the money.
Do you think CoD will die?
Is this an insane reason to fire an entire team

I'd like to point out that with all the hacking thats been taking place in Modern Warfare 2 and the current situation at infinity Ward this could cause and increase in demand for Bad Company 2. Gamers could become less trusting of the team at infinity ward and could most likely go over to Battlefield and EA's new Medal Of Honor. This could also impact the sales of Treyarch's new "Call Of Duty" title.

It's disappointing to see that the Playstation is in a seriously large hole right now. I don't have a PS3, I'm a 360 owner, but It upsets me a little to find out that a console with lots of potential and great games (now and later) is in a great deal of mess. To all the PS3 owners, strait from the heart of NUKEMANN1995 himself, feel your pain. I kinda know how it feels to "lose" something like this. The 360 red ring is something similar to PS3 crises. But it's on a much bigger scale and effecting everyone at once. So I hope you all find something to grief over, like liquor and some porn.

I don't know why everyone is blowing the ps3 glitch out of proportion. It was just a small glitch that was fixed, or fixed itself, in approximately a day. If it had lasted a week, then I can understand calling it an "ACOLYPS3" but since it didn't, the media is just over exaggerating

Why after one Global game threatening situation we get another bad situation(on a somewhat smaller scale than the ps3 situation) that could impact the games that Infinity Ward develops and the DLC for Modern Warfare 2? It has certainly been a strange couple of day.

With what happened yesterday, do you think some companies are getting second thoughts about "attaching" themselves to other big game developers?

I said it before and I'll say it again, Sony should implement a trophy "option" that occurs after the game has loaded. It is not fair that we cannot play offline games because of a trophy error when dealing with the internal clock. If a connection to PSN cannot be made, the game should still be able to play. This is poorly implemented engineering on the part of SONY. Also, they should release a patch so that in four years there is not another snafu like this one.

Do you guys think this is okay, or is operating a network as big as XBOX live or PSN sort of like a Department of Transportation, any sort of downtime is unacceptable?

It seems that on February 29, 2010 (according to my PS3) I got to find out that not only can my PS3 not automatically adjust for Daylight Savings Time, but it is also incapable of correctly dealing with leap years to the point of disabling significant console functionality.

I find it amusing that when the news of the IW deal started to spread, immediately the blame went straight to Kotick, with all the Darth Vader comparisons and what not. Sure, Activision might not be at the top of the list in terms of favorite publishers, but what if harsh action was truly justified by Activision's leadership? Would that really change how people think of IW and their (former?) leadership?

with this week being a big shake up for gaming, we can only speculate as to what this will bring for the coming rest of the week. we have to wonder at the future of infinity ward, what exactly happened at the office last night. we also have to wonder at this little glitch in the ps3 system. why couldn't sony have spotted that before and had something ready to counter it instead of having their users down and out for days?

If the firing of the two IW heads does anything substantial in the game market I have a feeling it is going to shake the confidence that buyers have in Larger studios. Buying a game is a big commitment in this 'hard' economy. With people buying games and playing them through their natural life cycle and then depending on DLC for a long time, sacking big players in a company is going to make the end user think twice about how stable their developers are and ultimately how worth while buying the game really is.

Whatever the situation may be may we wish the IW heads the best of luck and lets all hoe to see them active in the game industry in the future.

Activisions steps recently have been more about business then about producing good games. They seem to have more associated copyrights that should lead to a possible big game. It seems almost as if they are afraid to let someone develop a new property when they have so much old property to develop against. One of the most interesting parts of Kostiks DICE speech was his professed love for older games and non-acknowledgement of newer games. He is in this business to make a profit and bring a corporate responsibility to the table. Has that overshadowed his understanding of what makes a game good?

Do you think that video games as a artistic medium getting too big for there own shoes? Writing as far as a medium goes is a fairly inexpensive leap to take to mainstream. With technology and blogs becoming more popular its amazing what is out there for free. This year movies have shown that the amount of "wow" factor can trump a wonderful story by providing us with Avatar, the biggest money making machine that Hollywood has ever produced. Now that a triple A game costs 40 to 60 million dollars to produce I think that any artistic merit in a successful video game is going to be few and far between. For arguments sake, lets say the issue at Activision/Infinity Ward was based on direction the development company (Infinity Ward, the people who actually make what we see) and the publisher (Activision, the company that pays the bills for the people who make what we see) wanted to see future products go. You have the Dev team, Artist, who want to go in a direction. Then you have the Publisher, guys who pay for the artist toys, want to go another. With games costing so much to produce its more than likely a public company who is paying for it. So someone has to answer to stock holders who only care about a bottom line and how much money it can make. Were seeing developers getting bought in by half a dozen or so publishers which will decide what we will be experiencing. And those publishers are in fact driven by one thing, the almighty dollar. With that in front of me, I see video games going more and more from any form of artistic force to just the Wow factor a few people hope we will shell out our big bucks for. Any thoughts?

I don't have a question, but I wanted to comment on the whole PS3 snafu. Its going to mirror a bit of what fatman2008 said:

I found out about the problem relatively early on a message board, and the amount of stupidity over the whole thing amazed me. Whether it was people arguing as to what caused the problem or people who were just so antsy that they couldn't wait 24 hours to play a game, it was ridiculous. People were even voiding warranties by pulling internal batteries because they heard that helped. And I'm sure more than one person went out and bought a slim.

It's sad to see people are that stupid. Anyone with any common sense would know the best solution was to wait it out. Are people so dumb they don't realize Sony was obligated to fix their systems regardless of whether or not their systems were still under the original manufactures warranty? It disappoints me to call myself a gamer if I have to be associated with such idiots.
