UPDATE 12:02 AM: Double Fine's Tim Schafer, who had his own troubles with Activision over the release of Brutal Legend, recently commented on Twitter about what's happening between Infinity Ward and Activision.
"Getting mad at Activision for this kind of thing is like getting mad at an ape for throwing feces," said Schafer. "It's just how the beast communicates."
UPDATE 11:20 PM: It turns out Activision may have showed their hand in this matter earlier today.
In an SEC filing made this morning, Activision cited a human resources investigation into "breaches of contract and insubordination by two senior employees at Infinity Ward."
Based on the information we currently have, at least one of those employees may have included Infinity Ward CTO Jason West. It's possible Vince Zampella is the other unmentioned employee.
"This matter is expected to involve the departure of key personnel and litigation," read the filing. "At present, the Company does not expect this matter to have a material impact on the Company."
UPDATE 11:11 PM: Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling has vaguely addressed the situation.
"I should also say, while I appreciate all the calls, tweets, messages and hearing my ringtone a lot," said Bowling on his Twitter account, "they're in vain - as I have no info."
UPDATE 10:07 PM: More developments on the situation at Infinity Ward have come to light.
A screen shot surfaced from Infinity Ward CTO Jason West's Facebook page at Kotaku with the status update "Jason West is drinking. Also, unemployed." I can confirm from a source that's friends with West that update did actually come from West's account.
West also updated his Linkedin profile to appears to reflect a change in employment.
"President/Game Director/CCO/CTO Infinity Ward
January 2001 – March 2010 (9 years 3 months)"
While this doesn't yet provide much insight into what actually happened at Infinity Ward, it confirms there are changes afoot at the Call of Duty developer. As soon as I know more, you'll know more.

ORIGINAL STORY: Something's happening at Infinity Ward right now.
A source close to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 developer just informed me that a "bunch of bouncer-types" just showed up outside of the Infinity Ward offices unannounced. When approached by employees, the non-uniformed "bouncers" were unwilling to disclose why they were there.
"Everyone is on edge," said my source.
Infinity Ward studio heads Vince Zampella and Jason West reportedly met with Activision this morning and have not been seen by Infinity Ward staff members since. My source did not delve into specifics, but described the relationship between Infinity Ward and Activision lately as "tense."
The mood around the Infinity Ward offices is currently described as "freaked out" and "confused."
"We just wanna make our games," said my source.
I've contacted Activision for comment on the ongoing situation at Infinity Ward. Stay tuned.

Bummer, maybe now they will develop dedicated servers for MW2 and ditch the crappy Lobby System that console lovers like so much.
kujel
Finally IW is getting what it deserves.

Well, as someone who found MW2 a disapointment I'm hoping that whoever wrote the story is being fired.
More likely its the people who where forced into writting the lame story that are being fired. I mean we all saw how good they where in COD4, someone or something must have gotten to them.
Ah, who am I kidding, I'm probably the only one who bought MW2 for the solo player game. This is over some multiplayer crap.
Still, you know a company has to be pissed to fire the anyone assoiciated with the biggest enterainment industry sale of all time.
Ender_IF_
For all you guys who say this is a stunt... How does that affect someone who is going to buy Battlefield? i don't know what happened, but maybe Activision had the balls to tell IW to lay off some people, despite the gigantic amounts of money they made with MW2
iamedd
Well this apparently has been an all-around crappy day for everybody.
The_Gump
Bobby has sacked the Heads of IW (proberly coz they didnt like the way they had to make MW2 and dont like the way Acti wants MW3 as an MMO) and is now trying to destroy their reputation as well by claiming they did something criminal... see it in the corporate world all the time.
Activision shareholders need to get rid of Bobby before he ruins the entire company......
thenastyn
crazy stuff... ps3 issue, now this, and bad company 2 (can't wait for the last 1)... IW knows bad company 2 is a much more solid game than they can offer in terms of multiplayer so its hard to say... I thought IW paying ign for a crappy review of bc2 was enough... if its true though goodbye jason west, u screwed the game up anyway.

Crap.............

"Publicity stunt," huh?
Malapropism
some guy will probably just get sued over trying to get more money than he should which will result in a breach of contract and then them spending more on lawyer fees than on settling the case out of court

Ever since World at War I could tell things were "tense" between Infinity Ward and Activision. I must be the only one that noticed (after beating the game 6 hours after it launched :)) that the Activision Credits SPED through at the end of MW2 probably 5 times faster than the Infinity Ward credits. I sensed spite from the start. There were a lot of signs not just internally but in the games themselves that there were tensions between Infinity Ward and Activision.

Anybody read "Daemon"? The end of life as we know it starts with a murder at a video game company modeled somewhat on IF.
I hope this is just some ass getting kicked over how MW2 fell apart after the first month and nothing more sinister.
Luck702
@jamiep319, omfg, that sucks. hasnt activision learned that infinity ward makes games that sell. look at the numbers comparing 3 to 2 and 4 and 5 to mw2
The_Gump
Someone got fired and security is there to make sure they dont steal anything on their way out (and to keep the peace if other employee's start making a fuss)
IMHO : IW didnt like making MW2 the way they did (no dedis etc) but they had too because its the way Activision wanted....
So either someone at IW has voiced concerns to Activision about how they have destroyed the CoD brand and has gotten fired cause of it...... OR the ppl at IW have refused to make MW3 the way Activision wants (as an MMO) and got fired because of that..........
Either way, seems IW and Activision have different views about future plans and Activision has gotten rid of the people who dont agree with their ideas.......
or i could be completely wrong........
InfantryMarc
maybe its ea's way of buyin all of it since their sports games havent been doin that great.. i figure the guy that had security called on him was cuz he was drunk at work and bein an ass. they were prolly tense cuz he prolly threatened to fire everyone lol. hell who knows we prolly wont get another update other than this so not like its the end of the world. oh and btw... nice to see the ps3 has its own bugs so ya'll can taste what 360 owners have went through. Sony == EPIC FAIL

J/K gotcha sucka!!!!
Swal
This has to be real because you can't make this stuff up.

What did you delete my post and steal the credit for my research Pat?
evil warhead
look. i dont know whats up on why activision and infinity ward are not getting along, but it must be big. modern warfare sells like water in a dessert. someone must of pissed someone off somwhere because i get the feeling we are going to be the ones to suffer. this could mean no more modern warfare (many argue its the best call of duty)or all kinds of staff such as developers could change meaning a different game thats not really. infinity ward. whatever happens, happens time will tell. and hey treyarch is going to take us to veitnam. hell yeah! i have hopes for it.
legodarth
Despite the sad aspect of the story, I'm impressed with Klepek's reporting.
