You guys have demanded we talk about Heavy Rain for weeks. Believe me, the Feedback crew (heck, the whole G4 staff) has wanted to talk about Heavy Rain for weeks, too. Thankfully, with Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain now on store shelves, the Heavy Rain edition of Feedback is now here. Andrew Pfister, Adam Sessler, Sterling McGarvey, Mike Leffler of X-Play and myself headed into the studio to discuss 2010's most controversial game yet. There are some strong opinions on this one, friends.
In this week's episode of Feedback...
- Three of us spent most of last week at the Red Rock Casino & Resort in Las Vegas to take in DICE 2010. We went, we saw, we learned, we talked. Find out what our big takeaways were.
- Heavy Rain discussion for a good, long time. 'Nuff said!
- A user wonders whether younger gamers play video games for a different reason and whether older gamers with more experience go into playing video games with a unique eye.
Feedback, spending nights in Las Vegas inside watching episodes of Lost since, er, last week.

Buffalo Chicken for the win!! Great shirt Patrick... Always good to see Sterling "Shooter" McGarvey back on the panel... that said, not a fan on "quick time events" in games, so I'm going to pass on Heavy Rain.... not saying that it's a bad game (because I haven't played it!!) I just am not interested in it.... still, congratulations on keeping me interested in a discussion about a game I have no interest in (did drag on a bit though)... if only because every other web-isode of Feedback has been exemplary, I watched the whole thing... looking forward to next weeks, as always...

I feel Heavy Rain has somewhat laid the ground work on a more virtual style of game. Where the plot is quasi linear but the developers will use subtle cues to guide you through it. Looking ahead to where a system like Natal once further developed would be more of a virtual reality simulator. But either way I am keen on this idea, and I eagerly await playing it.

I have to say that I love feedback. I have been waiting on the Heavy Rain discussion so I was very pleased to see it up on the site. I have not played the full game yet only the demo, but one thing I can say about the demo was that I was disappointed when it ended and it really left me wanting more of the game so I will pick it up as soon s I can. I also have to say that the discussion only made me want it more. I really like it when a game can draw me in and make me just focus on it. Also have to say that my cousin, who doesn't play games watched me play the demo and that it was great, so I think that says a lot about this game also and also on the point brought up during the show about it being a game people could actually watch you or someone else play.

Easily a great discussion full of good opinions from real gamers. The best thing about G4 Feedbacks is that, we don't see any bias opinions.

"Primordial Ooze" made me laugh
Never thought about generational differences in quite that way before...but it makes sense, we are all a sum of our experiences after all, even when it comes to what we want from our video games.
Trying to think of my own primordial ooze...it's pretty thick with Zelda thats for sure...but theres also a lot of arcade games in there.... another big generational difference right there, the experience of playing in the arcade vs at home in front of the tv.

@Reign90 I love "At the Mountains of Madness", "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath". I have very fond memories of "The Rats in the Walls", and "Pickman's Model"

Hey Adam, if you actually read these comments, what's your favorite H.P. Lovecraft story?
Mine's...probably...The Statement of Randolph Carter, anyone else who's read feel free to share. I didn't think Lovecraft was that well known (though I do remember the review Sessler did for Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth).

Heavy Rain is definitely a video game. It may not be the KIND of video game that some people like to play, but it most definitely IS a video game.

How do you guys think "Heavy rain", compares to "Indigo Prophacy". "Indigo Prophacy" is the only game I can think of when you talk about this game, to grasp the concepts in this game I would like to know if this game has improved upon what Indigo Prophacy did, or did it succomb to some of the same shortcommings? This game makes me wish I had a PS3.

If I may. I beleive the comtroles of Heavy Rain-interms of the character-are vitail to the expirence dispite the lack of prision controls to make the quicke time events not fill like an overly tact on expirence. In that you really have no control of the characters; you can aim the character and make them walk but you cannot move them with a one to one move ment of the thumb stick.
This is why; If you got that 1 to 1 control-because of other gaming expirences-you would feel enpowered by it and start to think hay why can't I punch or kick when I hit square? And on the same note-think back to Resident Evil 4 and God of War-You had control over the character and could shoot or swing your chain at will and all the QTE were there just to add stress or make you feel like a total bad@ss. But in both situations they were short and sweet. To make them a more exspanded part of the but not make them irratatiing you would have to remove all percise control and the ability to do what ever you want by making it so you can direct them to do something but you do NOT control them.

I really want to commend you guys for discussing Heavy Rain while keeping your discussion relatively spoiler-free. I'm sure that was tough. I was hesitant when you admitted that you would be hitting some plot points, but continued on and now feel better for it. And I don't feel that your discussions of the few plot points in the game will diminish my enjoyment of it.
I have actually played some of it so far. I agree the voice acting isn't all that good. And I think that whole "JASON!!!" thing is the next "Do you know where I can find some sailors?" line. I found that line and the way he said it completely laughable. I'm sure if you say "JASON!!!" in front of somebody else who's played it they'll chuckle. That being said, I am excited to play more of the game. Keep up the good work and can't wait for Feedback next week.

I just finished Heavy Rain and I'm quite thoroughly impressed with it altogether. I'd been anticipating it but I also had a small amount of concern for what it would actually turn out to be. I'm surprised you guys didnt elaborate on how beautiful this game is. Its the best looking game out there in some regards. Anyways, I'm looking forward to the discussion down the road once most people have experienced it because I too have many thoughts about Heavy Rain swirling around in my head.

WOOOOO!!!! GO CAMERAMEN!!
Joe Lynch!
Frank Meyer!
Y'all did awesome! Stay on as official cameramen! (I remember Joe's tattoo from an earlier episode)
I especially liked the close ups of people's hands as they demonstrated the way they would play the game, nice touch there.

Once again my question gets read. Hooray. Just to clarify, I don't feel a sense of entitlement, it is mostly just noticing a different overall perspective when playing with younger gamers. Due to the easy connectivity of gaming in general, it is easy to just look at that happening, and I was mostly curious whether it was a simple generational cap, or something more, deep rooted with the actual properties of why we play games.
Great discussion on Heavy Rain. I have beaten the game once, I plan a second play through soon. One thing you guys did not say, that I personally thing needs to be stressed for anyone planning on playing it. For the best experience possible, at least in my eyes, don't re load, don't go back. Stick with the decisions you make, and let them take impact. Don't go in expecting much of anything, just go in ready to learn and understand. You should get a far more enhanced experience out of it.
