Even though Dragon Quest doesn't share the same popularity as Final Fantasy here in the US, there was little reason why Dragon Quest IX wouldn't eventually be released on the DS in the United States, even though Square Enix had been suspiciously quiet about their plans for it.
As it turns out, they aren't Square Enix's plans at all; they're Nintendo's. At Nintendo of America's media summit in San Francisco, the company said it would publish Dragon Quest IX.
No release date announced, except that Dragon Quest IX would be released sometime this year.

I want this to be good.
However between ff13 and nintendo's trends, I am worried.
8 was awesome on the ps2, I was hoping this was just a port. although highly unlikly.

I really enjoyed Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2 and picked up the Dragon Quest IV & V remakes on the DS. I think RPG's on the DS really cater to a very small audience. However maybe Nintendo is thinking with the install base that the DS has It's could sell really well.

Even though the Dragon Quest games aren't as complex as some, I never could conceive how SquareEnix planned to shoehorn a game like the 8th iteration onto a handheld, let alone expect it to be any good. In reference to the Sess-man's latest soapbox, it's just another case of shareholder appeasement and no attempt to find a happy medium with consumers. Odd reality given that it's the consumers which support companies and not the shareholders. -_-

I wouldn't say it's because Dragon Quest isn't as popular... they just hit their suck phase a lot sooner than Final Fantasy. Dragon Quest Swords on the Wii was an abortion. They haven't even released any noteworthy games on a noteworthy system in years. YEARS.

This must mean that Nintendo has high hopes for this title. Nintendo usually publishes third party games, especially those of third parties who have their own publishing abilities.
I will be getting this title. I have bought the others, love their old RPG goodness that is crammed for better or worse into DQ titles.
