Morning Hangover #71 -- Andrew Looks For Feedback, Patrick Has TV Envy

Our first Feedback "field trip" went up this weekend but we're heading into the studio soon yet again. We'll be talking about the one and only Heavy Rain this week, so as with other weeks, steer your submitted questions away from Heavy Rain, as Quantic Dream's game will get plenty of discussion.

Remember: you have an increased chance at being picked with a working profile image!

I have always wondered if the kids of today who have grown up with the consoles we have now, seem to play games for seemingly different reasons than older games would play a game. With that in mind, do you guys think older games, who experienced the early console days, have a greater sense of appreciation for the gaming industry as a whole? I can't count the times I've felt like a younger person plays a game to cure boredom, where as I see a lot of older gamers, play a game because they actually enjoy it. Just your guys take on this whole idea, would be interesting.

DICE was very melancholy this year, with talks of studios closing, publishers tightening up, budgets getting cut, and independent studio owners not sending their kids to college. Do you feel that this is a trend that will continue? Will we see a future in games that is only about the blockbusters; ultimately blocking garage developers from any kind of real success?

From what I've gathered, their opinions seem to be that the little guys making iPhone games are still living in their parents' basement. To pocket $100k+ and have a real team with you, it seemed like full console bonanzas are the only hope.

Patrick made some comments about having limited support to tap into the recordings at DICE. I'd like to know more about the technical difficulties you had with covering DICE in more detail, like having a second camera on the big screen.

I like many decided to see what the Four-Day Challenge for Heavy Rain was all about. I logged in, went through all the cryptic clues and what not, to be eventually rewarded with a code to download early the demo for Heavy Rain. When I started I immediately started hating it. Not for the story or the way it looked which were both really good, but for the way the controls were just for walking. It was so much the fact you had to use the R2 trigger to get your character to walk forward, it was that when you wanted to change direction you had to use the L-Stick, but what they failed to mention or just tweak on their own was that unless you hold the L-Stick down, your character will go in a who different direction than what you were aiming for. After a few moments I got the handle of it, but I now see that even if I will like the game overall, this way of walking verses the normal way all other games these days operate with just the one joy stick and maybe use the other to adjust the camera. My question (after this long set up) is did any of you who played the whole thing, or at least the demo, find that way of walking make it frustrating to play and move around?
